Brave New World is a dystopian novel by English author Aldous Huxley, written in 1931 and published in 1932. Largely set in a futuristic World State, inhabited by genetically modified citizens and an intelligence-based social hierarchy, the novel anticipates huge scientific advancements in reproductive technology, sleep-learning, psychological manipulation and classical conditioning that are combined to make a dystopian society which is challenged by only a single individual: the story's protagonist.

Well, here we are—11,100 pages read in 3 months, but who’s counting!Now I can finally say that I have read the Wheel of Time cover to cover, a work of Fantasy that's been more than 23 years in the making. As many of you WoT fans out there know, the first book in the series entitled The Eye of the World came out in 1990, and, unless I’m mistaken, it was a huge success, and deservedly so. While heavily influenced by The Lord of the Rings (sailing too close to plagiarism for comfort at times), Robert Jordan managed to veer off that slippery road as soon as book 2 (The Great Hunt) came out, creating as a result a juggernaut of a Fantasy world of amazing depth and detail (too much detail, some might say) peopled by just as deep and detailed characters, many of whom will forever live in many a Fantasy-loving heart.I believe everyone is or should be familiar with the story by now—that of Rand Al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn, whose destiny is to save the world from destruction, thwarting in order to do so all attempts by the Dark One and his minions and eventually defeating them. You can’t get more traditional Fantasy-esque than that, and I love it. Page after page, Robert Jordan manages effortlessly to take us readers on an amazing adventure full of plot twists, action and magic, and truth be told I couldn’t get enough of it…that is, until I got to book 7, A Crown of Swords, and everything fell apart. The plot began to meander and go nowhere, the amount of useless description and detail of this or that dress, shawl, jewelry and whatnot simply became indigestible, the characters and especially the female characters became downright obnoxious verging on sexist, and all in all the reading experience became a chore reaching outright torture in book 10, Crossroads of Twilight. At this point, I believe that even the most hardened reader would just call it quits and move on to something else. I think I vented my frustration loud and clear about this in my review of book 6, Lord of Chaos, so I won’t bother you guys with a rehash here.Anyway, long story short, the thought of quitting was real, but then one day I found myself picking up book 11, Knife of Dreams… and, miracle of miracles, it was so good that I simply could not put it down! Robert Jordan really penned an amazing book with this one, proving to the world (or, at least, to me) that he was back at the top of his game. Unfortunately we all know what happened next: Jordan became sick with an incurable disease and in no time he was gone, leaving behind the WoT unfinished. But then, as fate would have it, Jordan’s readers and fans were blessed with Brandon Sanderson as the young Fantasy writer accepted to finish the Wot series, releasing the first of the last three books, The Gathering Storm, in 2009.Now we all know that it can be a risky business for an author to pick up the baton and continue another author’s series. People will invariably compare him/her to the original author and more often than not find him/her wanting. Not so here. Sanderson was the perfect choice to accomplish such a feat, and the fact that he himself is a huge fan of the series is nothing but icing on the cake. While managing to blend to perfection both his own voice and that of Robert Jordan, Sanderson injects not only a breath of fresh air into the WoT, but a much needed dose of action and resolution to many questions that were both sorely missing in books 7 through 10. The ending, while somewhat predictable, was masterfully written, totally satisfying, and, after more than 23 years, could not have come soon enough.Best passage of the whole series (and quite possibly the most well-known!):The Wheel of Time turns, and ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legends fade to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the third age by some, an Age yet to come, an age long pass, a wind rose in the Mountains of Mist. The wind was not the beginning. Three separate but parallel stories of the U.S mortgage housing crisis of 2005 are told. Michael Burry, an eccentric ex-physician turned one-eyed Scion Capital hedge fund manager, has traded traditional office attire for shorts, bare feet and a Supercuts haircut. He believes that the US housing market is built on a bubble that will burst within the next few years. Autonomy within the company allows Burry to do largely as he pleases, so Burry proceeds to bet against the housing market with the banks, who are more than happy to accept his proposal for something that has never happened in American history. The banks believe that Burry is a crackpot and therefore are confident in that they will win the deal. Jared Vennett with Deutschebank gets wind of what Burry is doing and, as an investor believes he too can cash in on Burry's beliefs. An errant telephone call to FrontPoint Partners gets this information into the hands of Mark Baum, an idealist who is fed up with the corruption in the financial industry. Baum and his associates, who work at an arms length under Morgan Stanley, decide to join forces with Vennett despite not totally trusting him. In addition to Burry's information, they further believe that most of the mortgages are overrated by the bond agencies, with the banks collating all the sub-prime mortgages under AAA packages. Charlie Geller and Jamie Shipley, who are minor players in a $30 million start-up garage company called Brownfield, get a hold of Vennett's prospectus on the matter. Wanting in on the action but not having the official clout to play, they decide to call an old "friend", retired investment banker Ben Rickert, to help out. All three of these groups work on the premise that the banks are stupid and don't know what's going on, while for them to win, the general economy has to lose, which means the suffering of the general investor who trusts the financial institutions. That latter aspect may not sit well with Baum. Some of these assumptions may be incorrect and may be far more manipulative than they could have ever imagined, which in turn may throw curves into the process.

In 1930s Italy, a carefree Jewish waiter named Guido starts a fairy tale life by courting and marrying a lovely woman from a nearby city. Daisy's grandmother was a resident at that home, which is where she first met Benjamin. Although separated through the years, Daisy and Benjamin remain in contact throughout their lives, reconnecting in their forties when in age they finally match up. Some of the revelations in Benjamin's diary are difficult for Caroline to read, especially as it relates to the time past this reconnection between Benjamin and Daisy, when Daisy gets older and Benjamin grows younger into his childhood years.

After his death sometime in his 43rd year, suburbanite Lester Burnham tells of the last few weeks of his life, during which he had no idea of his imminent passing. He is a husband to real estate agent Carolyn Burnham and father to high school student Jane Burnham. Although Lester and Carolyn once loved each other, they now merely tolerate each other. Typical wallflower Jane also hates both her parents; the three suffer individually in silence in their home life. Jane tries to steer clear of both her parents. Carolyn, relatively new to the real estate business, wants to create the persona of success to further her career, aspiring to the professional life of Buddy Kane, the king of the real estate business in their neighborhood. Lester merely walks mindlessly through life, including at his job in advertising. His company is downsizing, and he, like all the other employees, has to justify his position to the newly hired efficiency expert to keep his job. Things change for Lester when he falls in love at first sight with Jane's more experienced classmate, Angela Hayes. Both Janie and Angela can see Lester's sexual infatuation with Angela, who courts such attention from any man as a sign that she is model material, she having once appeared in Seventeen and is a career to which she aspires. Lester's infatuation with Angela gives him a reenergized view on life, where he openly doesn't care anymore what anyone thinks about what he does, anyone except Angela. This infatuation coincides with the Fittses moving in next door: homophobic disciplinarian US Marine Colonel Frank Fitts who rules the house with a military fist (that fist being both figurative and literal), his semi-comatose wife Barbara Fitts, and their bright and quietly subversive 18-year-old son Ricky Fitts, who openly abides by his father's rules while behind the scenes lives by his own quite different perspective. Much like Lester's infatuation, Ricky immediately becomes infatuated with Jane; he considers girls like Angela as ordinary. The entry of Angela and the Fittses into the Burnhams' lives ultimately leads to each of the players confronting what is truly in his or her heart.

Conquering ninety percent of the known world by the age of twenty-five, Alexander the Great (Colin Farrell) led his armies through twenty-two thousand miles of sieges and conquests in just eight years. Coming out of tiny Macedonia, Alexander led his armies against the mighty Persian Empire, drove west to Egypt, and finally made his way east to India. This movie concentrated on those eight years of battles, as well as his relationship with his boyhood friend and battle mate, Hephaistion (Jared Leto). Alexander died young, of illness, at the age of thirty-two. Alexander's conquests paved the way for the spread of Greek culture (facilitating the spread of Christianity centuries later), and removed many of the obstacles that might have prevented the expansion of the Roman Empire. In other words, the world we know today might never have been if not for Alexander's bloody, yet unifying, conquest.

Agent James Bond 007 (Pierce Brosnan) is on a mission which includes a media tycoon, his former lover and a Chinese Agent. Two Supreme Court Justices have been killed. Now a college professor, who clerked for one of the two men and who is also having an affair with one of his students, is given a brief by her that states who probably wanted to see these two men dead. He then gives it to one of his friends, who works for the FBI. When the FBI director reads it, he is fascinated by it. One of the president's men who read it is afraid that if it ever got out, the president could be smeared. So he advises the president to tell the director to drop it, which he does. But later the professor and the girl were out and he was drunk and when he refused to give her the keys, she stepped out of the car. When he started it, it blew up. She then discovers that her place has been burglarized and what was taken were her computer and her disks. Obviously, her brief has someone agitated. She then turns to her boyfriend's friend at the FBI. He agrees to come meet her but before he does, someone shoots him and takes his place. At the meeting, he was about to kill her when someone shoots him. She then decides to turn to Gray Grantham, an investigative reporter, who was contacted by someone who says he has info on the killings but backed out at the last minute. He then meets her and tells her what her brief is, and basically, the man she suspects is a good friend of the president, and is trying to manipulate the outcome of a trial that is now before the Supreme Court. Grantham tells her that her brief can harm the president and although all they have are theories, he asks her to help him, but she wants to leave the country. Then Grantham's editor tells him that they have nothing, that he should drop cause the man she implicated is extremely powerful. Grantham is about to drop it when she says that she will help him. But can they stay alive?
