A sequence of love affairs with beautiful young women are fatally damaged by the collapse of his family's fortune, and the novel ends with him poised to face the challenge of making his own way in the world. Composed in an unconventional narrative mode, the novel is a rich fusion of satiric and romance idioms, and found a captivated audience on its publication in 1920. It made Fitzgerald rich and famous overnight.The Beautiful and Damned is a bleaker version of the corrosive power of wealth and its privileges, one of Fitzgerald's abiding subjects. Anthony Patch, is heir to a huge fortune, whose marriage to the beautiful and indolent Gloria is increasingly shadowed by Anthony's fall into alcoholism. Though he wins a lawsuit to gain his inheritance of millions of dollars, it is a pyrrhic victory, for he is now a physically and morally broken man.

In print since 1948, this is a single-volume collection of Oscar Wilde's texts. It contains his only novel, The Portrait of Dorian Gray as well as his plays, stories, poems, essays and letters. Illustrated with many photographs, the book includes introductions to each section by Wilde's grandon, Merlin Holoand, Owen Dudley Edwards, Declan Kibertd and Terence Brown. A comprehensive bibliography of works by and about Oscar Wilde together with a chronological table of his life and work are also included.

This story right here was LEGENDARY. Get it? Because it's about a legend? Nevermind...This tale, published in 1902, is like taking a journey into the past. The language is beautiful old English, with words like forsooth, prithee, and belabor. But, holy cow, does Paul Creswick do an amazing job. From start to finish, I was engrossed by the story. I've actually never gone through the legend of Robin Hood before, save for the comedy movie that came out in the 90s, so this was essentially a new read for me. And what a read it was! I am eternally grateful for this book, for it got me through 2 days of no AC or power after Hurricane Irma. The thing is, I wouldn't really recommend this book to just anyone. Now, if you're an accomplished reader who is looking for a one-of-a-kind tale of unmatched heroism and dastardly adventure, then I highly recommend this book. It may take a while for an untrained eye to get used to the old speech, but once you get it you'll cruise right through. Two thumbs up. P.S. The illustrations are incredible; each one is a masterpiece of art!

Jean Genet's seminal Our Lady Of The Flowers (1943) is generally considered to be his finest fictional work. The first draft was written while Genet was incarcerated in a French prison; when the manuscript was discovered and destroyed by officials, Genet, still a prisoner, immediately set about writing it again. It isn't difficult to understand how and why Genet was able to reproduce the novel under such circumstances, because Our Lady Of The Flowers is nothing less than a mythic recreation of Genet's past and then - present history. Combining memories with facts, fantasies, speculations, irrational dreams, tender emotion, empathy, and philosophical insights, Genet probably made his isolation bearable by retreating into a world not only of his own making, but one which he had total control over.

Mary Shelley is exceedingly famous as the author of Frankenstein, but this work isn't known at all and wasn't even published until 1959. With good reason. The story is that Mathilda's father leaves England after the death of his wife and doesn't return until she is 16 whereupon he falls in love with her. He confesses it to her and then kills himself. I'm a way too big of a fan of Edgar Allan Poe to rate it differently. Out—out are the lights—out all!  And, over each quivering form, The curtain, a funeral pall,  Comes down with the rush of a storm, While the angels, all pallid and wan,  Uprising, unveiling, affirm That the play is the tragedy, “Man,”  And its hero, the Conqueror Worm.But even I have to say that there are some of his poem that I do not particularly like, such as Al Aaraaf and The Bells. However, my all-time favourite remains unchanged. You cannot do better than The Raven.  “Prophet!” said I, “thing of evil!—prophet still, if bird or devil!—And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor Shall be lifted—nevermore!
