I was in the middle of this book when I read of Dorothy Gilman's recent death. Losing one of my favorite authors makes me sad, knowing that there will be no more books with that voice, wisdom, and wit. Dorothy Gilman is best known for her Mrs. Pollifax series, but it was actually her other novels that I preferred. My late mother-in-law was a devoted Mrs. Pollifax fan, and perhaps I stupidly relegated the series to old ladies who liked Murder She Wrote, for I resisted reading all but the first one. I should have known better, because I've re-read many of her other books. Now I am making up for it by going back and reading the Mrs. Pollifax series from the early days. Maybe I've grown more 'old lady-ish' myself and no longer mind a protagonist in the latter decades of her life. I certainly can't seem to relate to teenage vampire stories and tiresome petulant seventeen-year-old heroines any more.This book, published in 1971, is a delight. It has a rip-roaring plot where Mrs. Pollifax is supposed to smuggle passports into communist Bulgaria in the midst of a bloody crackdown. Being Mrs. Pollifax, she manages to go beyond her simple courier mission for the CIA, and get involved with a couple of traveling American college students, one of whom ends up arrested by the Bulgarian secret police. I'm not sure how she does it, but Dorothy Gilman has the talent for making you immediately care for these characters. Perhaps it's because the observant Mrs. Pollifax cares so, without being nosy and intrusive. She is also psychologically astute. She has an intuitive understanding of others and knows innately how to deal with them. She is also very brave, as well as being at peace with her death, which she faces a number of times. I feel sure that Ms. Gilman, who suffered from Alzheimer's, had bravely faced her own.

So, naturally, she became a CIA agent. This time, the assignment sounds as tasty as a taco. A quick trip to Mexico City is on her agenda. Unfortunately, something goes wrong, and our dear Mrs. Pollifax finds herself embroiled in quite a hot Cold War—and her country's enemies find themselves entangled with one unbelievably feisty lady.

Although Mrs. Pollifax is determined to give up spying for good, she can't help but agree to carry a small object to an agent in Thailand, and get one in return. The moment she lands, however, Mrs. Pollifax is horrified to find her contact dead and her husband kidnapped. The next thing she knows, she's tramping through the ominous Thai countryside, led by a curious fellow who may be trying to help her find her husband. Or he may have other, more sinister plans....

I'm a bit "obsessive" and so, when I find a series, I will bend over "backwards" (as the saying goes)to get them in order...I did that here. This is another book that should strain the credulity of the reader (or listener) except that in the hands of Ms. Gilman it takes on the character of a comedy/drama/adventure (think I Spy with Robert Culp and Bill Cosby. How many remember that TV program?)that I would call a page turner...except that I listened to the audio version. :)Here Carstairs, Mrs. Pollifax's handler, the man who accidentally sent her on her first assignment has need of her again and sends her to help a defecting spy. Of course, things don't go as planned...again. But then what fun would the book have been if things had gone as planned?As I pointed out before...not a mystery fan, but these are good books. 4.5 here if I could give that.

Edward Elric, the Fullmetal Alchemist, is on the other side of the gate. He has befriended someone who resembles his brother, Al, and has met a gypsy resembling Rose. He finds out that the Germans are planning on opening the gate, and attack the other side, which is Ed and Al's home. Although Al has learned a lot, he cannot stop all of them, and Ed cannot use Alchemy while in the other side. Ed tries to stop them, and Al just tries to be able to talk to his brother again, who everyone else thinks is gone.

Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood visits 1969 Los Angeles, where everything is changing, as TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) make their way around an industry they hardly recognize anymore. The ninth film from the writer-director features a large ensemble cast and multiple storylines in a tribute to the final moments of Hollywood's golden age.

In his feature film directorial debut, comedian Bo Burnham deftly encapsulates the awkwardness, angst, self-loathing and reinvention that a teenage girl goes through on the cusp of high school. Given that the 27-year-old stand-up comic achieved fame as a teenager himself through YouTube by riffing on his insecurities, he is uniquely capable as the film's writer and director to tell the story of Kayla, an anxious girl navigating the final days of her eighth grade year, despite creating a protagonist female instead of male. Like Burnham did more than a decade ago, 13-year-old Kayla turns to YouTube to express herself, where she makes advice blogs in which she pretends to have it all together. In reality, Kayla is sullen and silent around her single father and her peers at school, carrying out most of her interactions with her classmates on Instagram and Twitter. Her YouTube videos are a clever narrative tool that provide insight into her inner hopes and dreams, much like an inspirational online diary. One of Eighth Grade's biggest triumphs is in its realism.

Ten years after the invasion of Naboo, the Galactic Republic is facing a Separatist movement and the former queen and now Senator Padmé Amidala travels to Coruscant to vote on a project to create an army to help the Jedi to protect the Republic. Upon arrival, she escapes from an attempt to kill her, and Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Padawan Anakin Skywalker are assigned to protect her. They chase the shape-shifter Zam Wessell but she is killed by a poisoned dart before revealing who hired her. The Jedi Council assigns Obi-Wan Kenobi to discover who has tried to kill Amidala and Anakin to protect her in Naboo. Obi-Wan discovers that the dart is from the planet Kamino, and he heads to the remote planet. He finds an army of clones that has been under production for years for the Republic and that the bounty hunter Jango Fett was the matrix for the clones. Meanwhile Anakin and Amidala fall in love with each other, and he has nightmarish visions of his mother. They travel to his home planet, Tatooine, to see his mother, and he discovers that she has been abducted by Tusken Raiders. Anakin finds his mother dying, and he kills all the Tusken tribe, including the women and children. Obi-Wan follows Jango Fett to the planet Geonosis where he discovers who is behind the Separatist movement. He transmits his discoveries to Anakin since he cannot reach the Jedi Council. Who is the leader of the Separatist movement? Will Anakin receive Obi-Wan's message? And will the secret love between Anakin and Amidala succeed?
