There are some stories that wrap your body in starlight and breathe fresh air into you, protecting you from pain and harm. There are simply some tales that you will always come back to, no matter how old you are, just to seek comfort and be more in control of reality's wild spiralling.The Emily Windsnap series will  always  be these books for me.Since the moment I received the fourth book in my birthday (it can be read as a companion novel) and after finishing it and crying tears of pure joy, a feeling I haden't felt in a long time, despite the fact I was in a tender age, I knew something had changed in me. Since the moment I stepped foot in the bookstore and purchased the other free, I knew something had made my heart feel light.And since then, in my darkest times, when I could sometimes barely remember that life is important, I read this books, and it all came back to me.Emily, a girl from Brightport without a father, who has bullied and didn't feel good for herself, but later found out she was a mermaid, and her father was alive, kept in prison, was the main character. The girl who changed from a caterpillar toa butterfly, and in each book, she grew more and more, not just physically but also mentally. I connected to that girl in a spiritual level. I was a girl who was stigmatized from bullying for a long, long time. And I needed someone to show me that being myself was the most wonderful feeling. Emily did that. Since then, I followed her loyally in all of her adventures.In this book, I travelled with her to her new home, where merpeople and humans lived together peacefully. Was it the quite paradise it seemed to be, though? Of course not. There was something hiding beneath the surface, a terrible monster that was sleeping its eternal sleep, until a ship crossed the Bermuda Triangle. Because then, it would wake. And it would take what belonged to it.Emily did not wake the Kraken up before its time out of sheer curiosity. That's what I remembered, since it had been a while since I read the books. No, not at all actually. She woke it up because she wanted to be liked. She wanted friends who thought she was brave and beautiful. She wanted to be admired, and not hated and mentally tortured like in her old human school. When I realized this, something broke inside me. I shed a tear on that page, and I did not feel ashamed. Because Emily needed to learn.Thank God she later realized what a bad, bad decision she had taken.The writing of this book was so freshed, and as developped as a middle grade book writing can get. It made me dream, and wish, and believe, and took me out of reality, giving me my own unique place inside the story. I also adored the dual POVs, although the second one belonged to a character I do not personally like.The plot made me cry, as always, and smile, since these books are just perfect for the summer. I realized that there were some things I did not remember about the characters. Their guide to the island (who later becomes Millie's boyfriend) was called Archie and not Arthur and Mandy Rashton actually has short hair! I felt slightly ashamed of myself because both of these mistakes were visible in my name meaning aesthetics I had made about the series a while ago.The characters will always, always have a unique place in my heart. Not only Emily, but also her parents, who are sweet and loving and just the perfect family, Shona, her best friend who proves that being girly and feminine can make you more badass than one could realize some times, Millie, the psychic whose optimism and clear mind made me smile, Archie, our newly introduced guide with an important position of power and hell, even Mr Beeston and Mandy, will always remind me and teach me so much.I just don't know what else to write. This is a childhood favorite for me. Plus, there are some really creepy moments in it, and the way the Kraken is described is just A+.Also, since this is a really underrated series, if you guys have an urge to read middle grade, something mermaid related, or just a story about friendship, bravery, forgiveness and mental growth, read this series as soon as possible ♥Until my next reviewKeep swimming, fishpeople ♥~Mary

I hardly know where to begin bashing this book. Do I start with the 9-year-old boy and his 12-year-old sister, who read about 6 and 8, respectively? The imperial measurements (miles, feet) despite the German setting? The German boy, raised in Berlin, who thinks that Der Führer is "The Fury" and Auschwitz is "Out-With," despite being corrected several times and seeing it written down? The other English-language idioms and mis-hearings, despite our being told that he speaks only German? And that he believes that "Heil Hitler!" is a fancy word for hello, because he understands neither "Heil" nor "Hitler"?So maybe these are fussy issues, and I shouldn't trash the book on these minor linguistic flaws. Instead, I can start with the plot holes big enough to drive a truck through: that Bruno, whose father is a high-ranking official in "The Fury"'s regime, doesn't know what a Jew is, or that he's living next door to a concentration camp. Or that the people wearing the "striped pajamas" are being killed, and THAT's why they don't get up after the soldiers stand close to them and there are sounds "like gunshots." Or that there's a section of fence that is (a) unpatrolled and (b) can be lifted from the ground high enough to pass food and, eventually, a small boy through, AND that nobody would try to get OUT through this hole. Or that Bruno's friend Shmuel, a frail 9-year-old boy, would survive over a year in a Nazi camp. Or even the author's refusal to ever use the word "Auschwitz," in an effort to "make this book about any camp, to add a universality to Bruno's experience."That last is from an interview with the author that appears at the end of the audio version. I can't speak to most of what he said, because it was a lot of "here are all the places that are hyping my book," but the worst part of it, to me, was where he was addressing criticisms: "there are people who complain that Bruno is too innocent, too naive, and they are trivializing the message of this book." Um, no. I'm not trivializing the message; I'm objecting to his trivializing of the Holocaust. I find his treatment of the Holocaust to be superficial, misleading, and even offensive.As an audio recording, I'm pretty neutral. The narrator did the best he could with the material and there was some differentiation between the characters' voices, but the music that was added... some chapters ended with appropriately-somber music. Other chapters had no music at all. Sometimes the music appeared in the middle of a chapter. Two other incidental notes: first, normally you can't say anything negative about a Holocaust-themed book without being an asshole, because the books are so tied in with the Holocaust itself. In this case, though, I feel like, due to the fictionalizing of it, the book is far enough removed from Auschwitz that it's okay to be negative about the book without being insensitive about the Holocaust. Second, this doesn't land on my "run away! Save yourself!" shelf, because that's more for books that are comically bad--books that I can bash with glee and mock with abandon. I can't find anything funny about what makes this book so bad; it's just plain offensive and shallow.

October, 1988. Adam Carlson, a reporter for a local Anchorage television station, is currently in Barrow doing a series of pieces on the "local cultural color" of northern Alaska. While out on the sea ice filming a less than promising piece, he spots off in the distance what ends up being three California gray whales - a mother, father and son - who are literally imprisoned by ice which has surrounded them in the earlier than usual onset of winter. They are looking worse for wear as they have been ramming the ice surface to maintain a hole in the ice to be able to breathe and thus survive. The professional and cultural assessment he receives is that the whales, in their current situation, cannot survive for more than a few days, with the ice fives miles in distance to the open ocean with a vertical ice shelf that has developed midway. Adam's piece on the whales not only gets played on his station, but is picked up by news services throughout the States, including the national broadcasters, which brings the plight of the whales to the attention of various different groups. The White House gets wind of the story, support for the whales which they are determined to demonstrate, as public support grows, that White House support especially important in an election year. And the local indigenous group, the Inupiat, initially plan to harvest the whales in their certain death in an effort to protect their natural hunting/fishing way of life, despite the gray whale specifically not being part of their natural diet.

In the depths of the 1930s, Annie (Aileen Quinn) is a fiery young orphan girl who must live in a miserable orphanage run by the tyrannical Miss Agatha Hannigan (Carol Burnett). Parker's Japanese college friend Ken inspires naming the pup Hachi(ko), and is pleasantly surprised when Parker successfully tackles the challenge to get it to fetch, which Akitas don't usually do. Hachi makes a habit of waiting for his equally doting master at the station every evening, but after a cardiac crisis, Parker dies. Hachi refuses to accept this, being moved to Michael's home as Cate moves out, waiting for a master who can never come home again, by now collectively adopted by sympathizing town-folk. The story is told in flashbacks as class assignment 'my hero' by Michael's teen son Robbie, who also gets an Akita puppy.

Eventually he and Maria find themselves falling in love, even though the Captain is already engaged to a Baroness named Elsa and Maria is still a postulant. The romance makes them both start questioning the decisions they have made. Their personal conflicts soon become overshadowed, however, by world events. Austria is about to come under the control of Germany, and the Captain may soon find himself drafted into the German Navy and forced to fight against his own country.

The social workers inform the couple that Lizzie's mother is a drug addict who is currently in jail, and she set their home on fire because she left the crack pipe lit. They also find that Lizzie has two younger siblings, Juan and Lita. Although this seems like more of a challenge for Pete and Ellie, they agree to meet the siblings. Pete and Ellie have Thanksgiving dinner with Ellie's family, where they all make comments about never having confidence in the Wagners adopting kids. Ellie has enough and decides that they will go through with the foster care to prove that they can be good parents.

As their owner Andy prepares to depart for college, his loyal toys find themselves in daycare where untamed tots with their sticky little fingers do not play nice.
