Okay, first, I feel like I need to preface this review by confessing that if I had read this book for the first time at age thirty-one, I wouldn't be giving it five stars. My rating is entirely colored by my intense nostalgic feelings of love for it. As an adult reading it as a part of an ongoing series, this is a solid book that does some really cool things. But for a kid who'd never read any science-fiction before, this book absolutely GOBSMACKED me. It's the reason I love science fiction.Your average Animorphs book is 150 pages and takes place on Earth, as the kids fight a guerrilla war against the silent Yeerk invasion. This book is 326 pages and the main character is an alien. Almost all the characters are aliens, and it mostly takes place in space, or on alien planets. The main character also happens to be the Andalite Elfangor, the alien who gave the Animorphs their powers back in the very first chapter of the very first book. The frame of the book is that Elfangor is dying, and as he is dying, he sends his thoughts to be recorded, his "hirac delest," or final statement. Elfangor achieved great success and fame as a war-prince, but he carries a great burden for his part in events that happened years before, events that allowed the first Yeerk to obtain an Andalite host body. It is due to Elfangor's actions that Visser Three exists.But this isn't just the story of how Visser Three captured an Andalite body, it's Elfangor's story. Who was this alien who gave five kids the power to morph? Why did he do it, breaking one of his people's highest laws? Where did he come from? What I find so engrossing about this book is the worldbuilding. We've been hearing about all these alien races for twelve books now, hearing about the terrible wars they fight with each other, the places them come from. But here we actually get to see it. We get to see Andalite space battles and Andalite culture. We get to see the Taxxon homeworld, and the difficult choices that war thrusts upon everybody. We meet the creepy, tongue-in-cheek Skrit Na. And this book really doesn't pull any punches. There are some genuinely upsetting and terrifying things that happen. (view spoiler)[Elfangor's fellow aristh (cadet), Arbron, getting stuck as Taxxon and being left behind. The revelations of Alloran's past war crimes towards the Hork-Bajir. The terrifying nature of the Time Matrix (Loren's fast-growing fingernails into claws is a seriously upsetting image). And Elfangor's ultimate choice, to leave behind a safe life with his human family, and his soon to be born son, Tobias, to give the galaxy a chance at peace.Yes, this is where we find out that Tobias's parents are Loren and Elfangor (in human morph). Tobias's life is incredibly sad. Stuck as a nothlit, his mother long dead, his father he thought abandoned him. It would be far too coincidental if Applegate hadn't planned it that way from the beginning.  (hide spoiler)]

While this book gets docked a point or two for the cheesy 70s cover and the title, it deserves a place among the classics of the genre. I first read the Nebula-winning novella "Of Mist, And Grass, And Sand," in middle school, but I never realized that McIntyre had expanded it to novel length. It's a thoughtful adventure, a quest led by a mature and confident heroine, Snake. I love her as a character: she knows who she is, she is good at what she does, and she is comfortable in her own skin. I also love that this book is not your typical post-apocalyptic nightmare. It takes place so long after a nuclear catastrophe that society has rebuilt itself, albeit in a very different form. This lets McIntyre present us with a familiar but somewhat alien landscape, advanced and regressive technology, humans acting human but according to slightly different societal rules, all with lots of room to explore. While there are a couple of elements that seem as dated as the cover, all in all I thought McIntyre did a beautiful job of expanding that original story into the larger tale told here.

Nowadays, it seems like every horror movie is either a remake, a sequel or the kind of vile torture porn that makes you want to puke in your bag of popcorn. Filming one of these flicks requires tens of millions of dollars for a platoon of pretty actors, gallons of fake blood, special effects and a marketing campaign. Oddly, they don’t seem to spend any money on scripts for these things.But Alfred Hitchcock only needed about nine grand to buy the rights to this book. Then it only took a blonde, a shower, and a butcher knife to create one of the defining scenes in horror history. There might be a lesson in that story somewhere, Hollywood.Legend has it that Hitchcock had all the available copies of the book bought up after he obtained the rights so that he could keep the story secret for his version. If that isn’t true, it should be. I’ve often wished that I had a way to temporarily blank out my memory of certain stories so that I could read or see them for the first time all over again and be completely surprised. Unfortunately, alcoholic blackouts are extremely unreliable at this so I just have to try and imagine what it would have been like to read this book before the story became a classic. I bet it was a complete mind fuck for those poor bastards who did read it back in 1959.It holds up remarkably well despite knowing the story and it being over 50 years old. Shifting narration to the inner dialogues of different characters was very effective, especially with Norman himself. My only real complaint is that I wished it would have been the sister Lila and not Mary who took the infamous shower because Lila is a shrill nagging harpy that annoyed the hell out of me.

Jurassic Park4 starsWe are all familiar with this story, no? So my review will consist of my thoughts and experiences with it over time.My first memories of this were from the summer of 1993. I remember my aunt taking my brother and me to see the movie; all I knew going into it was that it was about dinosaurs and the toys looked awesome. Later that same year I would be introduced to the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, the first American iteration of which consisted of dinosaur-themed zords and costumes. Needless to say, 1993 saw me come down with a case of dino-fever, and no, I wasn't bit by a Compy... *sigh*I would later look around on the playground for dinosaur bones on a "dig", which were actually whitish rocks because duh. The Thing by Alan Dean Foster is a novelization of the 1982 classic by John Carpenter. Based on the novella 'Who Goes There'(1938) by John. W. The isolated crew is exposed to an alien creature which has been buried in the ice for centuries, an organism that digests and replicates its victims, and then hides behind a perfect imitation of its prey. Without a distinct corporeal form, the alien emerges only when threatened, its appearance announced by a grotesque display of shifting physical transformations. The metamorphoses made spectacular by hideous eruptions of half-formed limbs and mutated organs.'The Thing' is a representation of threats that could destroy civilization. But the story is not about what The Thing symbolizes; rather, it’s about the unrelenting acknowledgment that such a threat exists and, whether its form is psychological or physical, is what humans should be afraid of. The brilliance of the story rests on this psychological terror that is manifested with the fear of the unknown and manages to preserve a lasting place in our memory. The novel  is a masterpiece of paranoia and monstrosity. It manages to combine a slow burn of tension and suspicion with bright flashes of inventive violence beneath the surface of which hides disturbing questions about what we truly know of one another and ourselves.

I’ve never seen the film Poltergeist so I can’t compare the movie versus the novel. But what I can say is that this is one hell of a horror story! It had me hooked right from the beginning and I kept getting shivers as I felt the dread mounting. This book made me feel uncomfortable and uneasy and I adored every second of it. This is what horror is all about, that inexplicable feeling of dread and terror that follows you throughout the book and keeps you thinking about it even after you’ve put the book down. This is by far one of my favourite horror books I’ve read this year!

Ok so I am a massive nerd and I really love reading tie-ins and quite often even enjoy film/TV novelizations too! I honestly can't remember how I got hold of this in EBOOK format, but I have it so I read it. It made me appreciate the Tron 'world' a bit more..? Amazingly enough. It was quite fun to read and even though it was really similar to the film, there was enough interesting descriptions and the like that made it fun to read on it's own. Not really something for casual Tron fans or people looking to skip the movie lol... It also made me realise just how 'spiritual' the Tron universe is???? I know that's weird but listen, these programs believes in THE USER like they are these gods but each program has their own personal god, their own user. It's just really fascinating and it's something I never really paid too much attention to.The reboot/sequel film does make the spiritual thing a bit more obvious but in another slightly more obvious way. While I think the original film is a bit more subtle with it and isn't as PRODIGAL SON/HOLY ONE as the 2010 film. Like I said, I'm a massive nerd and I really do adore the Tron universe so this was a lot of fun for me to read and it helped that the writing was fun to read too!! https://hercommonplaceblog.wordpress....
