Scott has absolutely no sense of pacing. There are no ups and downs, no lulls, no breathers. Its pedal floored all the way for three straight books with each chapter introducing yet more escalated bad guys, escalated danger, and escalated collateral damage...all of which takes place in just a few days time. Pacing wise the book is pretty juvenille...its reminds me of the over excited announcer of Monster Truck Rally commercials SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY...ALL ACTION...ALL THE TIME!!!!So why 4 stars? Based on the quality of the narrative 3 would be more appropriate, maybe even 2. But the redeeming feature is the world is pretty interesting. Sure, it would appear to be a standard supernatural in the modern world urban fantasy trope...that's been done 100 times and usually poorly. But in this case, the supernatural elements are not just pasted on Vampires! or poorly modeled "tourist" quality Greek Myth. The supernatural denizens are actually drawn from global myths and represent a cross section that cuts far deeper than most. Many of the myths that were drawn from I had to look up...and was surprised to learn that they are, in fact, real characters and their qualities in the book are reasonable reflections of their mythological character.So there's some pretty decent scholarship underlying the story. Additionally the plot is actually pretty interesting. Sure it relies heavily on the over done "prophesized teenagers save the world" trope, but the villains are far more interesting (and the villains' bosses far more intimidating and mysterious) than say...Voldemort.So high marks for the scholarship, moderately high marks for the plot...but man...Scott really needs to learn that after a climax comes denouement...not another climax (or 3).

you know what was the best part of these books? and i say books as in plural because there were so fucking many of them i can't sit still long enough to check them all off. and i DID read every single one. what else was there to do in middle school?anyway, the best part of these books was brian's description of food. it was magnificent. it didn't just make you hungry, it made you crave weird ass things that nobody would ever dream about eating in middle school. nutted cheeses and flan bread and berry cakes and what-not; almost makes you want to be a sword weilding ferret yourself.which was good because by the tenth book you started to realize there was a trend to the plotlines. something bad happens, small furry animals go on a quest. they fight a lot of little battles until one major battle which the good guys almost lose until, when all hope is lost, a giant contingent of allies created on the preceding journey show up to conquer evil: together.still, i always finished satisfied. and a little hungry.

Roddy is a decidedly upper-crust "society mouse" who lives the life of a beloved pet in a posh Kensington flat. He invites Linda to bring Blu to Rio so that he and Jewel can save their species. Linda travels with Blu and Tulio to Rio de Janeiro and they leave Blu and Jewel in a large cage in the institute where Tulio works. While they are having dinner, smugglers break into the institute and steal Blu and Jewel to sell them. Linda and Tulio look everywhere for Blu, who is chained to Jewel and hidden in a slum. Meanwhile, Jewel and Blu escape from their captors and befriend a group of birds that help them to get rid of the chains. It is Carnival and the smugglers and mean cockatoo, Nigel, do not intend to give up Blu and Jewel, and chase the birds through the crowded streets.
