I read a review within the very walls of this site that stated that this novel deserved no more that 2 stars. The reasoning, it seems, is that all of the characters, other than "the crow", are card board and underdeveloped.I respect people's opinion. And, if I were to judge this book against the greats of literature, or even the greats of Graphic novels, I might have to agree. The story is violently stupid, and stupidly violent. The characters for the most part are underdeveloped stereotypes. This certainly is not Shakespear. Or, Hawthorne. Or,(fill-in-the-blank).But all art, in my opinion, must first be judged against itself. This story, told in graphic novel format, is not an attempt at classical literature. It is barely even a story. It is revenge. It is heart-ache. This story is a thesis on one man's descent into grief. It is a pictorial study of loss and the inability to see the good when so consumed by agony that one cannot fathom ever experiencing joy again. All of us have felt this reckless torment, where everyday the sun refused to shine, and most of us have clawed our way back to normalcy, replacing grief with acceptance and have moved on. We forget that pain. That pain is too woeful. This story is a reminder of that painful depth. It is a black mirror to our sunny dispositions.In that, this story, presented in graphic novel format, accomplishes exactly what was intended. Graphic novels are not written to be cool. "Not suitable for younger readers" - the warning on the back cover is well worth taking seriously. A classic and well-deserving Carnegie Medal winner, Junk is painful to read for the reason that it is truthful, accurate and told in the voices of young people falling victim to heroin addiction. They go through the various phases of invincibility delusion, adjustment to ever sinking standards, criminal behaviour, prostitution, desperate pain and physical downward spiralling while telling their life stories through their teenage perspective.It strongly reminded me of the true story of Christiane F., whose witness account on teenage drug addiction in Berlin in the 1970s was made into a book and later into a film, Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo. It haunted me for years after I read it in my early adolescence, and it leaves me pondering on what to do with Junk. Should I let my students and children read it? It is very good, and it will hardly trigger a healthy and stable young adult to try drugs. But it is a brutal account of violence and prostitution, and it might leave them with nightmares. Should one shield teenagers from the worst hardships, or let them discover the world in all its ugliness?That question always comes up when the American Library Association announces the latest banned or challenged books in school libraries. Most of the time, it concerns sexuality, bad language, violence or politically motivated messages. But this is teenage health and wellbeing potentially at risk. I guess there is no definitive answer to what is suitable for young adults, but I tend towards letting them read whatever interests them, while being ready in the background to talk to them and offer a platform for reflection.I will go with Oscar Wilde:"There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book.Books are well written, or badly written. That is all."This one is well written.

Their interactions, including their meeting, are laced with indirect sexual innuendo, most specifically on Hayley's part, although Jeff is clear also in an indirect manner that he does not have sex with minors. Regardless, Hayley is further able to convince Jeff to continue their face-to-face at his place. There, both Hayley and Jeff's true intentions come to light, their meeting which was no accident on either side, and the intentions which may be incompatible and have serious and deadly consequences.

Although cheerful, friendly, intelligent, well-dressed, authentic and wealthy, Charlie Bartlett has problems. After realizing he is being used, he attempts to stop the robbery, which of course immediately goes awry.

Sam Dawson has the mental capacity of a 7yo. He has a daughter who's homeless mother has abandons them both. Sam's difficulties become problematic, and she's taken away. Sam finds a lawyer who tells the case pro bono. In the process, he teaches her a great deal about love and whether it's really all needed.

A man about forty years of age tells the story from when he was a teenager in upscale suburban Detroit of his and three of his friends' fascination with the mysterious and doomed Lisbon sisters. In 1974, the sisters were seventeen year old Therese, sixteen year old Mary, fifteen year old Bonnie, fourteen year old Lux, and thirteen year old Cecilia. Their fascination still remains as they try to piece together the entire story. The sisters were mysteries if only because of having a strict and overprotective upbringing by their father, who taught math at the girls' private co-ed school, and overly devout Catholic mother, who largely dictated the household rules. The story focuses primarily on two incidents and the resulting situations on the girls' lives. The first was an action by Cecilia to deal with her emotions over her life. And the second was the relationship between Lux - the sister who pushed the boundaries of the household rules most overtly in doing what most teenagers want to do - and Trip Fontaine, he who could have any girl he wanted but wanting solely Lux.

While with the Oxford City Police, Morse is taken under the wing of veteran Detective Inspector Fred Thursday. Inspector Thursday names Morse his designated "bag man" and shows him the ropes as Morse begins to solve a string of complex murders, much to the envy and annoyance of some of his superiors, particularly Detective Sergeant Jakes and Chief Superintendent Bright. Thursday and Morse's fellow officer, Police Constable Strange, try to steer the young Endeavour into taking his Sergeant's exam, so that he may be relieved of "General Duties" and become Thursday's official "bag man" with the appropriate rank and title.
