So, I found this book at the library recently and HAD to check it out because this short series of horse books was, like, my FAVORITE set of books in elementary. I remember buying the novelization of the Spirit movie before came out and then discovering these other books and being completely overjoyed. Basically, the books work similarly to the movie - the horses are sentient in the same way as humans, but don't talk and generally act like horses do in real life, just anthropomorphized. As a kid, I LOVED this. I thought this made the books super realistic and that I was learning all sorts of stuff about wild horses and herd dynamics etc. Haha. While that's not true at all, the rest of the story stood up pretty well. Not a whole lot happens, plot-wise, but if you like horses, you can't really go wrong with this book. It's pretty much about a pampered riding horse accidentally getting caught up in the Alamo kerfluffle and then running away, learning to be wild, and joining a herd of wild horses. It's pretty straightforward - a great nostalgic read.

I think Mandy is really worried about Sasha the dog who risked her life to save another dog but got seriously hurt when Sasha did that and now Sasha is in the pet hospital and is on the verge of dying I think Mandy doesn't want that to happen because Danny Sasha's owner and his friends will be crushed if that happens. Danny, Mandy, and James are trying to track down Rupert's owner Rupert is the other dog Because Rupert's owner is hiding now I think this makes Mandy more determined to find him. Rupert's owner because he left Rupert to starve in his empty apartment. When the found they owner they gave him a summon to come to court and Sasha got better This makes me think Mandy will be really happy.

I had a few of these books when I was a little kid, but despite their nostalgic value, I can't honestly say that they were any good. In fact I'm surprised I can still read at all after reading these. This book and the others in the series are filled with nothing but choppy sentences, perpetually annoying and boring characters, extremely limited vocabulary for the target age and illustrations take up most of the pages so it's a good thing they're so cheap at thrift stores because they aren't worth the cover price.

lumet's an interesting guy to think about if one decides to make a film -- the guy's made some of the best films of our time. but for me, lumet provides a cautionary tale of what not to become. 12 Angry MenDog Day AfternoonNetworkThe VerdictSerpicoBefore the Devil Knows You're Deadall good. and Network is great. and he's made about fifty bad movies including A Stranger Among Us, Guilty as Sin, the remake of Gloria, etc...lumet's obviously an intelligent guy with good taste (cites Carl Dreyer as his favorite director - nice) -- and he's an auteur: a thematic quality runs through his best work and he clearly chooses his material by a certain standard. but lumet is at the mercy of two things: (1) the time in which he lives and (2) his cinematographer. (it's also worth noting that he comes from television which is about as visually distinctive as high school yearbook photography) check it out:(1) why are his 70s movies better? why do his 90s movies suck? well, he was a younger man in the 70s than in the 90s and had more fire in his belly. of course. but he was also making films in american cinema's 2nd golden age - the spirit of the time dominated his films: gritty, tough films both thematically and visually; intense character studies about flawed people; obsessive and paranoid films as a response to nixon/watergate/vietnam.(2) lumet's great w/actors. for sure. his pacing is great, he knows how to construct a scene... but visually, is there a 'lumet style'? well - in making movies he states, for example, that the color blue never once appears in The Verdict (paul newman's eyes!) as he wanted the film to have an autumnal feel. ok. that's kinda cool. but, ultimately, is there anything visual to distinguish a sidney lumet film? naw, not really. and this is ok. same for howard hawks - for hawks it's all a 'code of masculinity' and saucy dames. he left the visuals to the camera guy. fuck that. i don't wanna be at the mercy of my cinematographer. greg toland (cinematographer of Citizen Kane) famously explained that orson welles was able to reinvent cinema with his first feature in that he didn't know the 'rules', he didn't understand the limitations -- he demanded shots from toland that hadn't been done before and refused to hear that they couldn't be done. but there's only one orson welles. the rest of us will believe our DP when s/he tells us that a shot cannot be done. the rest of us will allow our DP to construct a shot. fuck that. filmmakers rule #1 -- on set, know how to do everybody's job better than them. spielberg has kaminski, a visual fucking god, but every spielberg film looks like a spielberg film.in the early 90s francis ford coppola said that new technology would democratize cinema. a few years back james gray said that new technology hasn't done much in the way of the democratization of cienema in that 99.9% of 'homemade' movies suck. gray's right. you gotta know the technical stuff. lumet is a very good filmmaker. (and i thank him kindly for Before the Devil Knows You're Dead -- the naked marisa tomei scenes have provided invaluable masturbatory assistance). and making movies is a great read. but, for me, it's a cautionary tale. i might never make a film as good as network. shit, i hope i make one half as good. but fuck if i let my cinematographer or the time in which i live be the deciding factor of what my film looks like! be like a writer banging out the beats of his novel only to have someone else handle the prose!* this is in no way meant to disparage cinematographers. the great ones are every bit the genius as the great directors. and a great cinematographer matched with a great director (bergman/nykvist godard/coutard, coppola/willis) can create something transcendent. but i ain't a cinematographer. and in terms of my shit, i'm an insufferable egomaniac. and hopefully the tension b/t a tough-minded director and tough-minded cinematographer will make 'em both better than they could've been on their own.

One of the better and more realistic 'our plane crashed in the woods and now we have to try to survive' stories. Gotta love the dog with the heart of gold, as always, and the circumstances allow us to see Greg and Patricia less as characters and more as humans. It's also refreshing to see a portrayal of two siblings who genuinely love each other, but who also bicker because, well, they're siblings and sometimes it's fun. My only issue is with my particular copy: a dog on the cover who looks nothing like the Santa Paws in the books.

A poor mother fox is trapped in a steel trap she has one young fox left and two kids name Mandy Hope and James Hunter help the mother by taking care of the young fox till both foxes are strong enough to go in the wild. I chose this book because the title seemed very interesting to me, also the picture drew me in. Mandy seemed like she was the most interesting character because she is adventurous in the woods and she loves taking care of animals with her mom and dad in animal ark. The least interesting person may have to be James because I feel like he is a side kick of Mandy. He follows her around and does what she says like a puppy. Even though he is trying to be a good friend. My favorite part of the book has to be when the baby fox health improved. My least favorite part of the book was when Mandy and James had to see the helpless mother fox almost die in the woods. Reading Mandy cried her eyes out when she saw this made me relate, when one of my animals were dieing. A important symbol in the book has to be the young fox which they called lucky to me the fox represents new life and a new begging. I would like to tell the author of how he did a really nice job with the book, it was a book with very descriptive writing and also it was just a very excellent story. I would properly trade places with James, Because I feel like I would be more help then he is. Instead of James agreeing to let the animals go into the wild I would tell Mandy to keep the animals in the animal ark to be in a safer environment. "Mandy felt the tears roll down her cheeks, She would miss lucky so much but she knew that a wild animal belonged in the wild" to me that quote is very interesting because even though Mandy wanted the mother and lucky to be with her and James she let those emotions go, so that both animals can be free. I learned from this book about letting go and helping others in need. I would read more animal ark story later in life because to me each story teaches you new things.

The Dinosaurs are an animatronics stone-age working-class family created by Jim Henson for Disney. Incredibly overweight, even for a dinosaur, Earl Sinclair (Stuart Pankin) is married to Fran (Jessica Walter) and tries and fails to support fourteen-year-old valley girl Charlene (Sally Struthers), sixteen-year-old Robbie (Jason Willinger) (whose crest eventually turns into a mohawk and gets dyed purple), widowed, cranky Grandma Ethyl Phillips (Florence Stanley), and terrible-twos Baby Sinclair (John Kennedy and Kevin Clash), the true master of the house. Sharp social commentary was featured surprisingly often. Earl is a tree-pusher for the Wesayso Development Corp., which regularly implements schemes to screw their workers even more and destroy the world for marginal profit increment. Chilled, but live prey, are kept in the refrigerator and are helpful when you can't find the milk, and caveman humans make occasional appearances as wild animals and pets.

A combination sketch comedy/musical performance show in the tradition of "Saturday Night Live," this program starred a teenage cast and was targeted at younger viewers. The show featured a number of repeating characters, including Baggin' Saggin' Barry, Super Dude, and the misfit fast food employees of Good Burger, which spawned a movie of the same name.

"Johnny Mann's Stand Up and Cheer" was an energetic, feel-good half hour of singing, dancing, and occasional comedy. Despite the title's implications, "Stand Up and Cheer" wasn't all patriotic music; it was, however, mostly adult contemporary standards - and even show tunes - but no rock and roll. Among those who guest-starred on "Stand Up and Cheer" were Jim Backus (singing "You Gotta Have Heart," Mr. Magoo-style, with the regulars), Bob Crane (who also played the drums), Milton Berle, Ken Berry (who sang with the regulars and did a tap number), and even Lassie (the regulars sang "I Wish I Had a Puppy" around her while she was on stage)! Each show ended with Mann saying, "Always remember....," after which the chorus sang, "Keep your eye on the grand old flag!" as a giant American flag appeared behind them. A terrific variety show that could be enjoyed by the entire family.
