Craig Thompson, for all the lack of works in his bibliography, is one of the best creators working in comics today. Apart from Blankets, he has only released one other major work of fiction. (His third, \
  Habibi\
, will be released this Fall.) [The cutest of meet-cutes.]There are any number of reasons that Thompson's work should be lauded. His art is gorgeous and his brushline expressive. He treats personal topics with a sense of both whimsy and honesty. He writes true experiences, even when they're fictional. And as great as all those things are, there is one idea that stands out in his work that I've yet to see another creator tackle (let alone master) as Thompson has done.His sense of the sacred and his ability to convey it in ink is breathtaking. He offers his readers these holy moments, these frozen, fluid, organic treasures. These sacramentals. Whether he intends to lead the reader into a religious experience or not, his work really is very spiritual. As spiritual as an atheistic holy experience can actually be at any rate. There may be moments in Miyazaki that approach the wonder of the sanctuaries that Thompson builds in Blankets. It's for this reason (among others) that Thompson's second book remains one of my favourites, even years after having first encountered it.The sweetly disturbing sentimental journey that was seeded years earlier in Thompson's Goodbye Chunky Rice finds pregnant fruit in his nearly-600-page opus, Blankets. Semi-autobiographically chronicling (via chrono-thematic structuring) his early life—from his establishment in faith and his discovery of love to his abandonment of that love and his subsequent abandonment of faith—Thompson plays honestly at all times with his story elements, thereby lending his tale an uncanny credibility. And while flashbacks and tangents proliferate, the overarching chiastic structure verifies the reader's intuition that Thompson knows well where he is headed and is going to take you there whether you like it or not.[Kinda want to punch this lady right in the breadbox.]Thompson's illustrated avatar acts, at all times, with striking realism and the chaos of his thoughts is entirely believable—if not exactly illustrative of the average meditative development. The Thompson that frets and plays in Blankets—we'll call him Craig— is highly introspective and acts often in the heat of his youthful emotional turmoil, rather than from a simple, sensible motivation. And though one may often wish to chastise him for such sillinesses, his youthful passion and pendular over-reactions will more than likely endear Craig to readers as they recognize more than a little of themselves in him.This book is a masterpiece of form, symbol, and structure. Tokens bend and writhe and carry narrative significance throughout. Thompson's art here is fluid and is of that less-polished variety found also in Goodbye Chunky Rice and serves well to establish the variety of moods described in his several vignettes.From the perspective of one who grew up both in a faith-community that was friendlier to the arts and in a home whose high standards weren't as strictly enforced, I found his story particularly compelling and tragic. Surrounded by hypocrisy and a weak-kneed, moralistic fundamentalism, the source of his disillusionment is not difficult to see. Perhaps Blankets' greatest quality is the empathy it exerts from the reader. I pitied and cared for Craig. I felt the same for his brother, his parents. I mourned for Raina, Craig's love interest in the book. I grew despondent for her family. More than anything, I wanted to hug each of these characters and make it all right and sensible again. [Man, how brutal to be Thompson's parents, years later to read this panel and think: "Oh crap. I did that to a child? I wanted to surprise him and all he could think about was whether he had sinned? And not even whether he was in trouble but whether he had sinned?"]And the whole while, my anger kindled toward an institutionalization of faith whose expression was not compassion, not mercy, not love. That Craig lived in a locale whose cutural acumen was bent toward a fear and persecution of that which skewed from the status quo is a horror that can be understood (while still remaining a horror). That his subculture should behave identically, built on a foundation of fear when it ought to be built on joy, peace, and love is terrifying. Thompson's work engaged in me a fury for a people and place with which I have no experience. They may not even exist as he portrayed them, but at the least, it is a challenge for me to not hate these characters who actively tear down Craig's life even from a young age. And as someone who actively tries not to hate anyone, consider this a testament to the veracity with which Thompson draws out Craig's life and circumstance.Blankets is an evocative work that should not be missed by any who would appreciate a serious, heartfelt, and magical telling of the tragedy and wonder of what it means to come of age.[review courtesy of Good Ok Bad]

In this graphic memoir, Alison Bechdel charts her fraught relationship with her late father.Distant and exacting, Bruce Bechdel was an English teacher and director of the town funeral home, which Alison and her family referred to as the Fun Home. It was not until college that Alison, who had recently come out as a lesbian, discovered that her father was also gay. A few weeks after this revelation, he was dead, leaving a legacy of mystery for his daughter to resolve.

Spring's Awakening is a tragi-comedy of teenage sex. Its fourteen-year-old heroine, Wendla, is killed by abortion pills. The young Moritz, terrorized by the world around him, and especially by his teachers, shoots himself. The ending seems likely to be the suicide of Moritz's friend, Melchior, but in a confrontation with a mysterious stranger (the famous Masked Man) he finally manages to shed his illusions and face the consequences.

I think that my age is above the target group of this book, but that surely did not stop me from enjoying it. To a certain degree. That is, knowing beforehand that it’s a children’s book, I was a bit shocked by the ending.However, the style of the author as well as the setting and topic are lovely. The atmosphere is very consuming and the entire book can be finished in one reading, easily.I was not aware of how old The Paul Street Boys actually is, and yet it did not strike me as such. It could have been set in any given time period and it would not have mattered. Because this is a book about values and values do not have an era.It was a lot more than I expected to read – meant for children and yet able to speak to grown ups as well, because the ideas of courage, leadership and dedication will never get old and that is what this book is about. The characters all have their childish treats, yet they all possess a set of values which can be envied. Or maybe that is exactly what the author was trying to say, that in children we can find things that we ourselves have lost growing up. There were, of course, negative characters, and even they had dignity and honor.The language was mesmerizing. The author paid attention to so many tiny details, the entire picture he presented to the reader was so intricate and delicate, I was truly delighted by his style. Not having experienced the 20th century Hungary, for obvious reasons, I still did not have any problems imagining the world of the little characters.Overall, a lovely read, despite the sad ending. I don’t feel like going into that, but be prepared for it.

Akira ist anders. Zu Beginn des Mangas brauchte ich ein paar Seiten um zu verstehen, wie anders sie ist. Akira redet nicht viel, weil sie einfach nichts zu sagen hat. Sie mag nicht die selben Sachen, wie die anderen Mädchen, kann nicht so tratschen wir ihre Freundinnen in der Klasse und versteht auch nicht, was so interessant an den Jungs sein soll. Das ist auch kein Problem für ihre Mitschüler, sie mögen das ruhige Mädchen trotzdem, auch wenn sie sie nicht immer verstehen. In einem ruhigen Tempo lernen wir Akira immer besser kennen und zuerst war ich etwas, naja, entsetzt. Was soll bitte an ihm attraktiv sein? Warum verguckt sich so eine stille Schönheit in solch einen Mann? Allein die Dinge, die sie an ihm mag sind abschreckende Beispiele! Ab da war schon mein Interesse geweckt und sie ist auch eine Person bei der man nie weiß was als Nächstes kommt. So konnte sie mich alle paar Seiten überraschen, sei es mit ihrer Art (sie zieht oft grundlos einen ernsten Blick, der zu Missverständnissen führt) oder mit ihrem Handeln (viel impulsiver als man denkt!).Auch die anderen Personen konnten alle bei mir Punkten aus verschiedenen Gründen. Ich denke, die Autorin hat ein Händchen dafür ansprechende Charaktere zu gestalten, weil selbst die Nebencharaktere aufleuchten und mein Interesse gleich wecken konnten. Neben der ruhigen Geschichte, gibt es einige kleinere humorvolle Momente, die mir besonders gut gefallen haben und das war auch nötig, denn der Manga hat einen melancholischen Unterton, da Akira sich gerade in einer schweren Zeit befindet. Es ist nichts, was direkt geschrieben wird, sondern was man zwischen den Zeilen heraussehen und lesen kann und vieles hängt mit ihrer Verletzung zusammen, wegen der sie das Laufen aufgeben musste. Auch andere Dinge sind zwischen den Zeilen geschrieben, das heißt jetzt nicht, dass er schwer zu lesen ist, sondern nur, dass es Details gibt, die ergeben beim genauen lesen einen viel größeren Sinn – nur damit ihr vorgewarnt seid. Im Grunde ist es eine sehr gelungene Mischung aus Slice of Life, Drama und Liebe, doch auf eine sehr individuelle Art mit einem besonderen Zeichenstil. Der Stil von Jun Mayuzuki hat einen altmodischen Charme, besonders bei dem Manager des Lokals kommt das gut durch und mit den kleinen Details an den Personen und in den Hintergründe konnte sie mich völlig überzeugen. Den Manga After the Rain empfehle ich jedem Leser von romantischen Geschichten, die auf der Suche nach besonderen und unüblichen sind und sich gerne überraschen lassen. Gekonnt wird hier eine interessante Liebesgeschichte mit hohen Altersunterschied erzählt, sehr unschuldig und zart mit der richtigen Prise Humor und vielen unterschiedlichen Nebencharakteren. Die Reihe werde ich auf jeden Fall weiter verfolgen, bzw. ich kann es kaum abwarten weiter zu lesen und mehr von Akira zu sehen!

Johnny English and his sidekick, Bough have been assigned the case of investigating the theft of the British Crown Jewels. The prime suspect is a mysterious French entrepreneur, known as Pascal Sauvage. English and Bough soon find out the horrifying truth behind the theft and Sauvage, but it's not going to be an easy job to bring him to justice.

Tawny Madison (a role which consisted solely of repeating what the computer stated, much to Gwen's chagrin), Shakespearean trained Sir Alexander Dane as alien Dr. Lazarus, Fred Kwan as engineer Tech Sergeant Chen, and Tommy Webber as child pilot Laredo. Eighteen years after the series last aired, it lives on in the hearts of its rabid fans. However, it lives on in infamy for its stars, who have not been able to find meaningful acting work since. Their current lives revolve around cashing in on however those roles will afford, which usually entails attending fan conventions or worse, such as electronic store openings. Only Jason seems to relish his lot in life, until he finds out that his co-stars detest him because of his superior attitude as "the Commander", and much of the public considers him a laughing stock. Their lives change when Jason is approached by who he thinks are convention fans asking for help. They are in reality an alien race called Thermians, led by Mathesar, who have modeled their existence after the series, which they believe to be real. When Jason and then the rest of his co-stars (along with Guy Fleegman, who was killed off before the opening credits in only one episode) go along with the Thermians, Jason's co-stars who believe they are off to yet another paying gig, they learn that they have to portray their roles for real. Without screenwriters to get them to a happy and heroic ending, they have to trust that their play acting will work, especially in dealing with the Thermians' nemesis, General Sarris. Guy in particular fears that he will go the way his character did on the series. But when they run across technical issues that they as actors didn't care anything about during the filming of the series and thus now don't know how to deal with, they need to find someone who should know what to do.
