Basic Plot: Magic comes back to the world.Michael Turner's artwork really caught my eye on this one, all the color and detail, and that's really the main reason I picked up the first issue. The story is appealing: the return of magic to a world that largely knows only technology. I read it as each issue came out, though, so the story was a bit difficult to follow at times due to an erratic publishing schedule and my inability to remember much in between installments. I also notice more and more that Turner's female characters all look essentially the same with a few varying details- usually in the hair or clothes. It's annoying, especially from an artist so praised for his work.

Streets of Laredo is a four-part Western-type story of The Punisher going to a small Texan town and raining righteous fury on the gun traffickers he finds there. Also included in this book are three one-shots (two drawn by Steve Dillon, yay!) that sees an injured Frank team up with Joan, an old friend from Welcome Back, Frank; Elektra and Punisher having the bloodiest courtship ever; and punching bag Detective Soap getting one more kick in the nards from (Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon)life. In short, this book is all kinds of awesome!I enjoyed the one-shots more than the main story, partly for the Dillon art, partly for the variety. Seeing a bedridden Frank Home-Alone the hell out of a quaint country cottage against a horde of murderous Russian gangsters was enormous fun, especially with soft-spoken Joan delicately helping Frank mow them down by feeding bullets into his gun!The Soap story… man, Ennis/Dillon love socking it to that guy, don’t they? Earlier in the series they had him (unknowingly) sleep with his mum and this time around they… I can’t, it’s too horrible to mention (and that last page is too funny to spoil in a review anyway)! Needless to say, Soap tells his comically unlucky life story and of course it only gets worse. Gotta love that dope!The Elektra team-up story was fun too, even though I’m not a fan of Tom Mandrake’s art. Elektra’s been taking out Frank’s mob targets before he has a chance to off them himself – a woman after his own heart! It’s a deeply gory tale with an unexpectedly romantic end.The main story, Streets of Laredo, is like the classic Western: small town in thrall to villainy, hero walks in and shoots up a storm/brings the justice, etc. Minor differences are the villain is a single mother and the hero, aside from Frank, is a gay Sheriff (some parts of Texas ain’t so backward after all), but otherwise it’s your standard Western and who doesn’t love one of those? The shootout is exciting, I liked the sheriff and the gun smuggling mum – I’m always surprised at how effortlessly Ennis introduces new characters and in the shortest amount of time endears them to the reader – and overall its terrific Punisher storytelling.The only critique I’d make is with Cam Kennedy’s art. Generally I like his work, particularly on Judge Dredd, but his goons – the villain’s lackeys – all look alike. There’s this one character design that has long, straw-like hair with an overbite and wearing a wifebeater, and I’d swear this guy got killed multiple times in the story – but it turns out this was a different guy each time! A little bit more diversity would have gone a long way.Otherwise, I can’t fault Ennis’ work on this volume. It’s a great recovery from the lacklustre Full Auto, and a real pleasure to read. The Punisher, Volume 5: Streets of Laredo is Ennis’ brand of fun, carnage-filled Punisher mayhem at its best!

i can’t decide whether to rate this 2 or 4 stars. it was so enjoyable but not to the point where you understand what’s going on. but that’s probably because i’m not a spawn follower and i just randomly decided to read this at 12am when i’m half asleep. i really enjoyed the bright colors of the art and the writing style. it’s probably a 4 for how much it entertained me, but a 2 only because it’s completely irrelevant in my realm and too out there for me.

Eight volumes in and Blade of the Immortal remains a superior mixture of visual art and storytelling. Samura's is a fine balance of scratchy pencil drawings and deep detail, able to grant character both to mountain ranges and human faces with very few lines. Unlike most manga artists, he's more adventurous in what he draws, often depicting the backs of speakers, or their hands or feet, to give a hint of the way they gesticulate or what they're doing as they talk. Given his already expressive faces, these touches ensure that every page has character, inviting the eyes to fly along it caught in the samurai intrigue of the plot, or to loiter of the patterns of clothes and the poses of human bodies.This volume wisely tones the violence down after the end of "Heart of Darkness" went into borderline torture-porn gore. “The Gathering” balances the previous volume, with characters lying low to avoid blame for that gruesome event. Its oppressive atmosphere expresses the anticipation of punishment as keenly as the previous volume expressed the disturbing nature of a sociopath. It's a deep credit to Samura as a storyteller, showing Blade of the Immortal isn't just a book of cool fight scenes as the first volume might lull people into thinking, but something mature that is merely fascinated with the naive and the horrible. Characters are still charitable, thoughtful and penitent in this world. It is not all tough guys and blades, though those, too, get their time. Ironically the one fight scene of the book is the worst drawn of the series, and the poorest scene in the volume, almost too frantic to follow.In the subdued story of this volume, Samura also highlights another strength. Many of his expository chapters fly along as you try to figure out the next steps in each person's plan for the Itto-Ryu assassination. These make the upcoming violence more important, while giving an essential breather.

This was pretty dang fun! So what do we have here? Our main hero Sara waking up for a coma. She still knows who she is and the power she has with the witchblade weapon. We are introduced to a detective named Patrick and together they begin to piece together who wants Sara killed. By the end our hero faces off against the church, well a cult church, but I like to think just church to make me smile. And then...well I won't spoil it but a big ass demon dragon comes to fight! Good: The art is simple, nice, and clean. Sara and Patrick together are great, a lot of fun banter, and you actually feel the emotions in this one. I also thought the pacing was a perfect way of giving us humor, serious moments, and fights. Bad: Well, it's safe. No one you expect to not die, dies, and people you expect to get hurt, do, and the plot is simple and easy. You've seen it in a 100 comics before. So playing it safe is really it's only weakness. Saying it's a simple plot you've seen might sound bad but it's still tons of fun. I'ma go with a 3 out of 5 but I have a feeling this series will grow into something special.

Garth Ennis is without question the finest writer The Punisher has ever had. His Punisher MAX series was glorious as were his other non-MAX Punisher volumes like the classic Welcome Back, Frank, The Resurrection of Ma Gnucci, and Born. So imagine my surprise when I discovered a whole raft of other Punisher volumes – 6 in total – written by Garth Ennis that I’d never read before! Then imagine my crushing disappointment when I realised 5 out of 6 were out of print!! The only copies available were on Amazon and eBay going for extortionate prices. Why, WHY, Marvel, are these out of print?! These are Garth Ennis/Punisher books – perfection itself!! You’re leaving money on the table by not publishing these! What’s worse is that this book is seriously awesome. It’s Ennis at his funniest, most inventive with art from his regular Punisher artists, the incredible Steve Dillon and Darick Robertson, tag-teaming the issues. It’s like Marvel are taunting fans by dangling this great book in front of us and saying “Liked this one? Well, you can’t have the others! AHAHAHA!” Is this Marvel’s idea of a joke – “punishing” fans by withholding these brilliant Punisher books?(Red mist descends)…Ok… I’m calm now. Was that fist-sized hole always in my wall? The stories are loosely connected and see Frank save hostages in South America, go on a night on the town with a journalist intent on telling Frank’s story, take on the midget mafia(!) AND Wolverine, and visit Belfast, post-Good Friday agreement. How good do those stories sound? They’re even better! (Start of A-Team music starts playing) (Voiceover)These forgotten Punisher books were taken out of print for reasons nobody knows. Two volumes (the other is Welcome Back, Frank) promptly escaped from the out of print prison and made a break for the printing press. Today, still wanted by readers, they survive as comics of fortune. If you want this lost Punisher series back if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team then we can only hope that Marvel see sense and republish them in new editions!Duh duh duuuuuh, duhduhduh!

Wow, I didn’t think it was possible but Full Auto is the first Garth Ennis/Punisher book that I didn’t love. That’s not to say it’s bad but a couple of the stories here are just too blah for me to say it was good. Plus Steve Dillon disappears for the last three issues, replaced by Tom Mandrake. Ennis Punisher without Dillon just doesn’t feel right. The three part Brotherhood storyline was the best one here. Even Frank Castle has rules and not killing cops is one of them. So when he’s faced with two crooked detectives, he decides to indirectly screw up their corrupt plans than shoot them in the face. One of them has a weakness for cards and is so heavily in debt to the mob that he’s swiping parcels of drugs from crime scenes to reduce his debt; meanwhile his partner is an alcoholic wifebeater. Once again it’s amazing how Ennis puts Frank in the background (who hangs about menacingly and swoops in to periodically mete out death), introduces two new characters and still manages to fully engage the reader’s attention. I never wanted to see more of Frank than we do in the story because I wanted to see how the two detectives’ fates played out. And though it’s compelling, it’s also grim reading, especially the way Ennis/Dillon unflinchingly show the drunk beating his wife to bring home the brutality of domestic violence and how pathetic the detective is for stooping so low. The one-shot story of a mob guy fascinated with the search for a giant squid in the New York harbour was one of Ennis’ jokey Punisher stories but this one was very average. It’s not very funny and you can see the ending coming a mile off. Steve Dillon steps aside for Tom Mandrake who illustrates Ennis’ tale of a sicko living in the underground tunnels of New York, hiring homeless people to abduct their own for his bizarre plan. This is the low point. The story’s not very interesting, the villain’s motives are stupid (though they kinda make sense in Ennis’ twisted way), and Frank is stuck with a temporary sidekick who acts as a tedious mouthpiece for every critic of The Punisher. The story drags on for three issues and was totally boring. I’m almost glad Dillon didn’t illustrate this as it would’ve been even more disappointing. Garth Ennis is THE greatest Punisher writer and, while this one is worth checking out for the Dillon-drawn stories, I’d recommend reading any other Punisher book with Ennis’ name on instead. Here it is if you’re wondering: the worst Punisher volume Garth Ennis ever produced (which is still better than many other writers’ efforts on the character) - Full Auto!

Got drawn into this book after playing the video game which I really liked. The book and the video game tell radically different stories, with wholly similar superpowers and characters (even if the designs and roles - and even names - are tweaked a bit).There are essentially two stories. The second far outclasses the first. The writing and art both improve greatly, and the motivations of the characters define themselves.The basics are this: Jackie Estacado grew up an orphan until he was six, then was taken in by his uncle, Frankie Franchetti, a next gen mobster making a name for himself in NYC. He brings Jackie up to be his hitman and enforcerer, bringing him into a life of treachery and violence. Jackie however is also in possession of a hidden, evil curse. On his twenty-first birthday, it manifests and he is now the wielder of The Darkness, an elemental force of evil that exists only to slake it's thist for murder and death. The first story covers its origin within JAckie, while the second focuses itself around revenge for the death of Jackie's one true love.The art is particularly eye catching when the stand-in artist is at work. While I like both styles present in the second story, the stand-in does a more painterly job of things, which is a refreshing change in a comic book.The nagging thing about this book is that it seems they actually hold back on something. Oh, it's not what you'd expect. They're plenty graphic at Top Cow - there are showers of blood, gore, bits and parts of people flying everywhere. No internal organ goes unexplored and bared ofr inspection.But for some reason, they're not OK with swearing. They actually use profanitype when dropping the f-bomb. It seems foolish. They'll depict gruesome acts of savagery, but four letter words can't be presented. Kind rankles my sensibilities. Cursing seems so much more acceptable than watching someone be impaled by living darkness.

Many of you are probably already familiar with my tales of woe regarding the selection of graphic novels through my library systems (yes SYSTEMS plural – two different metro libraries and neither of them stock many pitcherbooks). Due to the slim to nil variety, I kind of grab whatever is available without knowing anything about what I’m choosing. The Darkness was chosen simply because I’m familiar with the name Garth Ennis. I offered this up as a potential buddy read with my pal Jeff, but he is on an anti-Ennis kick after shitting his pants reading Crossed. You missed out, Sucka! This was your type of graphic novel – filled with . . . \

Now I’m not necessarily opposed to scantily clad women, or boobs in general, but all these chicks were there for was for . . . . \

Yeah, yeah, I hear you: “So what’s wrong with that?!?!?!?!” Nothing, except when the bad guy is really supposed to be a badass bitch I don’t want her getting all emo over her harem. I also wasn’t a huge fan of the MC. Jackie Estacado is supposed to be a real panty dropper. I mean, he takes of “problems” for his uncle . . . \

The Darkness wasn’t all bad, though. I enjoyed having an “origins” volume that actually provided some origins and I love anti-heroes rather than hero heroes. The twist that went along with Jackie’s power made me LOL . . . \
