The Outsiders is about two weeks in the life of a 14-year-old boy. The novel tells the story of Ponyboy Curtis and his struggles with right and wrong in a society in which he believes that he is an outsider. According to Ponyboy, there are two kinds of people in the world: greasers and socs. A soc (short for "social") has money, can get away with just about anything, and has an attitude longer than a limousine. The hero-narrator of The Catcher in the Rye is an ancient child of sixteen, a native New Yorker named Holden Caulfield. Through circumstances that tend to preclude adult, secondhand description, he leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days. The boy himself is at once too simple and too complex for us to make any final comment about him or his story. Perhaps the safest thing we can say about Holden is that he was born in the world not just strongly attracted to beauty but, almost, hopelessly impaled on it. There are many voices in this novel: children's voices, adult voices, underground voices-but Holden's voice is the most eloquent of all. Transcending his own vernacular, yet remaining marvelously faithful to it, he issues a perfectly articulated cry of mixed pain and pleasure. However, like most lovers and clowns and poets of the higher orders, he keeps most of the pain to, and for, himself. The pleasure he gives away, or sets aside, with all his heart. It is there for the reader who can handle it to keep. J.D. Salinger's classic novel of teenage angst and rebellion was first published in 1951. The novel was included on Time's 2005 list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923. This is a fine entry in the Matt Scudder series, but fans of conventional mystery novels may be somewhat disappointed, for it involves not one particular case, but three: the armed robbery of an after-hours joint, the extortion of a tavern for the return of its cooked books, and the murder of the wife of a patron of one of Matt's usual haunts. Scudder does eventually connect two cases and solve them, and he sort of solves the other case too, but there is a lot of conversation not germane to the detective work, and their connection and solution are almost beside the point. Well, just what then is the point? These three cases are a decade in the past, narrated by what is a now sober Matt in a meditative farewell to drink: to its taste, to its effects on the drinker, to the world where it is served and the colorful people found there, but, most of all, to the bond between drinker and world, a bond which the determinedly sober man may never experience again.As Scudder tells us, during the summing up:\

This is a typical Matt Scudder mystery: slow as molasses, slim on plot, very grim—and totally absorbing.Scudder—the unlicensed private detective who “does favors” for money—has two cases to solve: 1) the disappearance of young actress/waitress Paula Hoeldtke from Muncie Indiana, and 2) the mystery of his new AA buddy Eddie Dunphy, who makes an appointment with Scudder to discuss something in his past that bothers him and is found dead in his apartment—apparently of auto-erotic asphyxiation—the next day. In the course of his investigations he acquires a dangerous new lady (she drinks) and a dangerous new friend (they call him “The Butcher Boy,” and not for cutting up the kind of animals you'd think).As I said, the plot is thin and pretty slow, but the down-at-heels NYC setting is so good, the seedy alcoholic atmosphere so well evoked, and the characters (especially Mick “The Butcher Boy” Ballou) so well delineated that I didn't even mind it that I figured out the plot's last surprise before I was supposed to. Lawrence Block is a master, and this is a very good book.

Welcome to another scintillating episode in the 80-proof life of New York's favorite unlicensed private detective.Lawrence Block's Matthew Scudder series is about as close to a sure thing as you're gonna find in the mystery/crime jurisdiction. Not only is Scudder one of the most exceptionally well-drawn characters populating the genre, but Block is adept at devising smart, attention-holding plots that keep you tuned in to the story's goings on.Here, Matt gets hired by a dirty cop turned whistleblower, who suddenly finds himself framed (?) for the murder of a fetish-specializing prostitute, whose clientele includes some of the city's most influential gentlemen. To solve the mystery and reach the end of this little drama, Scudder will have to wade through a sordid array of the smarmy, the sick, and the slimy. Good times for all.  One of the aspects of these stories that I find really appealing is Matt's method of investigation. He doesn't Sherlock Holmes the crime scene or solve cases by knowing how to identify the 43 different kinds of tobacco ash. He's an unassuming "Columbo" type who just strolls around talking to people, usually while slugging bourbon, and gets by with a common sense knack for piecing things together. He’s smart, but not brilliant, and has a good grasp of human nature and an ability to recognize behavior patterns that people develop over time. However, as entertaining as Matt working the case is, what really makes this series so miss-resistant is the time Block devotes to showing us the "non case specific" aspects of Matt's life. Over the course of the first three novels, the reader has seen Matt as a fully realized human being, one who tries to do the right thing, but struggles with demons of his own. There is a level of intimacy that is not typically present in these kinds of stories. We care about Matt, we care about what he cares about, and this makes the events of the story significantly more impactful.Thus, the most compelling facet of the novel is Matt's continued devolution into becoming a serious alcoholic. From the opening pages of book 1 of the series, The Sins of the Fathers, Matt has been on a steady diet of bourbon and coffee, bourbon and beer, and bourbon and ice. Block, to his credit, has allowed Scudder's drinking to work its way into the story naturally, without fanfare, and we've seen Matt's problem steadily get worse. Now, we're finally seeing signs that Matt's drinking is in bloom and starting to impact his work.\
   I left Kenny’s shortly after that. Then there’s a stretch of time I don’t remember clearly. I probably hit a bar or two. Eventually I found myself in the vestibule of Jerry Broadfield’s building on Barrow Street. I don’t know what led me there or why I thought I ought to be there. But it must have made some sort of sense to me at the time. A strip of celluloid popped the inner lock, and did the same job on the door to his apartment. Once inside his apartment, I locked the door and went around turning on lights, making myself at home. I found the bottle of bourbon and poured myself a drink, got a beer from the refrigerator for a chaser. I sat sipping bourbon and chasing it with beer. \
 The casualness with which Block relays the above is just perfect and adds, in my opinion, to the power of the scene.  Eventually, we finally have a character asking Matt the $64,000 question, and Matt's reply struck me as rather foresshadowy.\
  'Are you an aloholic?' 'Well, what’s an alcoholic? I suppose I drink enough alcohol to qualify. It doesn’t keep me from functioning. Yet. I suppose it will eventually.' 'Could you stop drinking? Or cut down?' 'Probably. If I had a reason.' \
 I haven't read the subsequent novels yet, but I understand this issue will continue to evolve. Given my fondness for Matt and my thorough enjoyment of Block's storytelling, I intend to stick around to see what happens.I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you come along for the ride.4.0 stars.
