The Outsiders is about two weeks in the life of a 14-year-old boy. The novel tells the story of Ponyboy Curtis and his struggles with right and wrong in a society in which he believes that he is an outsider. 5 SILLY ★'sOh. My. Goodness. This is another one of my favorites from back when I was a kid. There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly is a goofy lyrical book that was rewritten from a 1940s American folk poem by Simms Taback and is also a Caldecott Honor Book. It's bold, whimsical and the illustrations are awesome. There is a hole that's cut out of each page to reveal the eaten animal in the old ladies belly. The artwork is really bright and colorful. It's such a fun and silly book that kids love. It's a book you can truly have a lot of fun with that for sure. Trust me you won't be disappointed!

My daughter is in 1st grade (age 6) and is TERRIFIED of this book. I realize it is very, very popular but my daughter has a great imagination and now she is very scared of eating orange, green, and blue foods. She pretty much only eats pink/red and white foods now. We got this book as a gift from my father when she was 4 and it scared her. We asked her preschool class to put it behind other books so she wouldn't see it in the book area (if she did see it, she wouldn't go near it). In kindergarten we warned her teacher and it wasn't an issue. Now in 1st grade I have warned her new teacher however I know it is in the classroom and she is scared of it. Today the principal read the first half during lunchtime and she covered her ears but could not block the sound. She is dreading lunchtime tomorrow when he will finish the book (and go through the part where the girl is all stripes).(She ended up eating lunch in the school office that day so she wouldn't have to hear the story.)SO if you have a sensitive child like I do, I urge some caution with this book. Never mind the author's intended message, some kids will be freaked out by the possibility of foods causing them to change colors and may suffer anxiety for months, or years, to come.

"Amelia Bedelia Helps Out" by Peggy Parish is a tremendously funny read...Amelia Bedelia was read so much while I was growing up...her character is such a big part of why reading was such an enjoyable activity back then...and still is. In this particular episode, Amelia Bedelia is helping out around the house, and, in good 'ole Amelia Bedelia style, many of her chores are done all wrong. That is, everything except for the tea cake for Miss Emma's party. It turns out that, even through Amelia Bedelia followed her "own" recipe in making the tea cake, the tea party turns out alright...great actually. Miss Emma's friends love it and actually want more...You'll have to tune in to this read for Amelia Bedelia's secret ingredient..., and don't be surprised if you want some yourself.I give it 4 stars.

Once upon a school day, I think when I was in second grade (so this would have been pre-1980, I believe), we went on our bi-weekly library outing. The librarian had us sit in front of her in the storytime area and whipped this book out. She read it to us. That may have been when I realized my love for wordplay.I don't think I'd ever laughed so hard in storytime in my life.That librarian read us a lot of good books (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Charlotte's Web(that was in third grade and it took several weeks to finish), and others) but this one is the one that stuck with me for years. The sponge cake? Drawing the drapes? And the best part was that I understood Amelia's blunders, I got why it was funny and it warmed this little spot in my brain, in my heart, and in my soul which was not yet blackened and shriveled.I have this book on my shelves.
