About The Author: Enid Blyton, 1896 - November 28, 1959 Enid Blyton was born in London in 1896. She was educated in a private school and thought that she would become a musician until she realized that writing was her passion. She attended Ipswich High School where she trained to become a kindergarten teacher and eventually opened her own school for infants. Blyton's first poem was published in 1917, entitled "Have You-" which appeared in Nash's Magazine. In 1922, her first book of verses was published, entitled "Child Whispers." In 1926 she accepted a position editing the children's magazine "Sunny Stories" as well as writing the column "Teachers World." Blyton's first full length children's book was published din 1938 and was titled "The Secret Island." After working on the column for years, Blyton quit "Teachers World" in 1945 and also ended her stint as editor of "Sunny Stories" seven years later. In 1953 she started her own children's magazine called "The Edith Blyton Magazine" which featured stories about her characters and news on the clubs formed around them. Her most famous stories were those of the "Famous Five" The Magazine closed in 1959. In the 50's and 60's Blyton was criticized for the language in her book, for being to simple, but some 300 are still in print today. Blyton has published over 600 books in the course of her career. Enid Blyton died in her sleep on November 28, 1968. She was 72 years old.

Adventure abounds on the Bonny Scot in Boston Harbor as Nancy helps Captain Easterly uncover the mystery of his ghostly visitors. From the moment, the clever young detective and her friends, Bess and George, stay on the old clipper ship they are confronted with fire, theft, unseen trespassers and other dangers. Nancy faces an additional challenge: to find a clue to the clipper’s missing figurehead. The lost “wooden lady” is needed establish a clear title to the ship. Nancy wonders why the prime suspect in the recent robbery at the Marvin home is in Boston and is easily entering and leaving the Bonny Scot without being seen! This book is the original text. The plot of the revised story (©1967) is similar with minor revisions.

The Mystery of the Blinking Eye is the 12th book in the Trixie Belden Mystery series. This time, Trixie, her BFF Honey Wheeler, and the entire Bob-White Club take a trip to New York City. This is a special trip for the gang. They are meeting Ned, Bob and Barbara at the airport. They met the three at Happy Valley Farm in Iowa during Easter break, and now they are traveling to NYC to spend time with the Bob-Whites! Dan Mangan, newest member of the group, is also along for the trip. The group will be staying at the Wheeler's NYC apartment while the 10 teenagers enjoy the city. While still in the airport, Trixie spots an older woman who appears upset. She approaches and asks if she can help. The Mexican woman explains she has had trouble in the city and has to return home, but she isn't sure where to go to get on her flight. Trixie helps her. Before the woman boards her plane, she thanks Trixie, giving her a hastily scribbled note and a colorful straw purse as a gift. Later when she looks inside the purse, there is a small little wooden idol statue. Then she opens the note, the Mexican woman was a fortune teller and gave Trixie a poem that reads like a riddle. Clues in the poem start coming true.....and strange men start trying to steal the purse and her idol. What's going on?? Is the statue cursed? Or is this a mystery for the Bob-Whites to solve?This adventure for the group in NYC was fun to read! The kids are having fun touring New York, and trying to figure out why strange people seem to want the ugly little statue the woman gave Trixie in the airport. Dan Mangan is back in action, after several books where he didn't figure into the story. I was glad that the newest Bob-White got to go on this trip with everyone. The kids from Happy Valley Farm blended well with the usual main characters. The suspense in the story was entertaining and fun....and not too scary for kids to enjoy the story. Another fun visit with the kids from Sleepyside, NY!The Trixie Belden Series was published from 1948-1986. The first six books were written by Julie Campbell. Various other authors under the pen name Kathryn Kenny wrote the rest of the series.

The Secret of Terror Castle is a book that kids and their parents will enjoy. It has all the elements that appeal to kids: a hidden headquarters with secret entrances, a reportedly haunted castle to explore, a fancy car to be seen in, a rival schoolmate to overcome, and of course the Three Investigators agency and all the adventures that await. It also showcases traits that parents desire their children to have: imagination, creativity, courage, intelligence, analytical skills, and teamwork.The mystery itself has many details to be analyzed. The three boys work well as a team with each boy playing his part; Jupiter with his analytical thinking, Pete with his physical abilities, and Bob with his research skills. Even Worthington jumps in to help solve the mystery; he is just as intrigued as the boys.With just the right amount of suspense and terror, this nicely paced mystery appeals to kids and adults alike with its flights of fancy and adventuresome spirit.

Yellowed musty pages, musty as an old attic; my book is 73 years old. I read it when I was a young girl, remembering only that Nancy Drew was in the attic and there was a black widow spider. Later on I connected it to a real story of the time that my 16 year old brother and I at age 12, began to explore the boarded up cellar at our home. It must have been the window that was boarded up. After taking off the boards, he poked his head in and then when he backed it out a black widow spider was climbing down its thin sticky thread, and had he not pulled his head out at that time, it would have landed right on his head. And then he asked me if I would go into the cellar to explore and to bring things out. And I did. I was brave.And then my brother added to my story after reading this: He wanted to kill the black widow spiders, so he took some .22 short shells, pulled out the bullets, took a lit candle and dripped wax into them. He then placed them in the refrigerator, and when the wax hardened, he loaded his rifle, taped a flashlight to the barrow so he could see the spiders and went back to the cellar. After placing the rifle inside the cellar, a black widow spider began crawling down its thread, almost landing on the rifle. He gave up that idea but came up with another. He lit a stink bomb and put it down in the cellar, or was I the one to go down into the cellar with it? I forgot to ask. I remember the stink bomb well for the fumes chased the spiders into the house, and for a while we were very busy killing spiders. There was shelving in that cellar that went went up to the ceiling, and on those shelves were old canning jars. One day I pulled out the shelving, and the room above it, the bathroom, began to pull away from the house. My mom was not too happy. You see the house was built without a bathroom. The original owners had an outhouse. That add-on bathroom was not added on too well, and they just expected that shelving to hold that add-on in place, and for many years it had. Nancy Drew has her own scary moments in this book as she explores the attic of an old man’s home, looking for his son’s music sheets. One music sheet had already been stolen and was already being played on the radio. She needs to find the others before the thief finds them all. Instead, she finds black widows and kills them. She finds secret rooms and goes looking for clues in a factory where she finds more black widows. I thought, no wonder all I remember about this book was a black widow, but it is so much more than that because she has quite a a few adventures. What fun to explore an old attic. How I wish that I had had them to explore, but every time Nancy goes up into that old attic and finds things, I am right along side of her. Note: Copyright, 1944. My name is printed in the book. How strange to look back and see how you use to print. The two Es in my name looked like a U, and the B in my name, an H. And two other names are in the book, Sally Dunsecon? The last part of the name is too faded to tell. And then there is the name, Beir.When I see that I had kept that book all these years, I think of other things that I wish I had kept. Some mothers keep their children's school work; I wish mine had. I wish I had the painting of a blue bird that the teacher asked my mom to come and look at. The teacher praised it. I was 7 years old at the time. Then I had high school art work, and a story that my teacher read to the class and asked if he could keep. And college term papers. When you are young you don't think of keeping things, but when you get older, I am 75 now, you wish you could see them again. I hope mothers and kids will read this and keep things, even if they are not important to them now.Read again August 1, 2017
