What is “freedom”? When I have the right to do things as I wish them to, is that called freedom? Or when I can think and speak about issues on my mind, is that freedom? Are we ever actually free? What we do, the things we do, either according to the acceptable notions of society, according to societal idea of virtue, fame or success, or according to our own notions of pleasure, can we say we do it by being entirely free? Can we? Isn’t a free mind also free from the burden of accumulated thoughts of all these years of human existence? Can we put aside the long fed ideals from our psyche and look at everything afresh? Can we? If we can do that, only then can we be free from the known. This is the crux of J. Krishnamurti’s Freedom from the Known. He asks you to be free from whatever has been known to you in this world through the assistance of religion/society/ideologies and be constantly aware of yourself, of your own thoughts and actions, observing things as they appear to you, not seeing them from a prejudiced mind or under the influence of what is already known to you. This is a tough book to review. Not because it is difficult to understand but because you do stand the chance of comparing it with other works/authors and also with that which has already been known to you, your own experiences, something which may altogether defy that which Krishnamurti proposes through this work. He speaks on the topics of faith, truth, fear, conditioning, pleasure, pain, love, meditation and asks you to look within, observe yourself as you really are, not as what you think you are or want to be. What he proposes is something entirely (and refreshingly) different from the ideals of Hindu philosophy pertaining to religion, dharma, atman and God. Time is the interval between the observer and the observed. That is, the observer, you, is afraid to meet this thing called death. You don't know what it means; you have all kinds of hopes and theories about it; you believe in reincarnation or resurrection, or in something called the soul, the atman, a spiritual entity which is timeless and which you call by different names. Now have you found out for yourself whether there is a soul? Or is it an idea that has been handed down to you? Is there something permanent, continuous, which is beyond thought? If thought can think about it, it is within the field of thought and therefore it cannot be permanent because there is nothing permanent within the field of thought. To discover that nothing is permanent is of tremendous importance for only then is the mind free, then you can look, and in that there is great joy.He reminded me of Joyce here:So if you understand that where there is a search for pleasure there must be pain, live that way if you want to, but don't just slip into it. If you want to end pleasure, though, which is to end pain, you must be totally attentive to the whole structure of pleasure - not cut it out as monks and sannyasis do, never looking at a woman because they think it is a sin and thereby destroying the vitality of their understanding - but seeing the whole meaning and significance of pleasure. Then you will have tremendous joy in life. You cannot think about joy. Joy is an immediate thing and by thinking about it, you turn it into pleasure. Living in the present is the instant perception of beauty and the great delight in it without seeking pleasure from it.And of Camus here: When you are alone, totally alone, not belonging to any family, any nation, any culture, any particular continent, there is that sense of being an outsider. The man who is completely alone in this way is innocent and it is this innocency that frees the mind from sorrow. By asking us to be free from the already known, he is proposing to bring about a revolution in this world in order to make it a better place to live in.We have reduced the world to its present state of chaos by our self-centered activity, by our prejudices, our hatreds, our nationalism, and when we say we cannot do anything about it, we are accepting disorder in ourselves as inevitable. We have splintered the world into fragments and if we ourselves are broken, fragmented, our relationship with the world will also be broken. But if, when we act, we act totally, then our relationship with the world undergoes a tremendous revolution.But what he says, though is very appealing, it nonetheless seems to be unattainable. Not because he asks you to be free from the shackles of known and look for yourself but because by the very act of suggesting that, he is proposing a thought, a principle to follow, by making us aware of it, which is contradictory to his ‘ideal’ (view spoiler)[[ He asks us to be free from all ideologies ] (hide spoiler)]

I don’t think I had read “the Call of the Wild” or watched any adaptation of the book (faithful or otherwise). I’m both happy and sad about that. I’m not sure I would have appreciated it as a child, or even a young teen when I think most people come into contact with the book. It’s a fascinating and probably dangerous literary conceit to follow the adventures of a dog. The number of places such a project could go off the rails into the saccharine and annoyingly anthropomorphic has to be innumerable. I think London manages to avoid those traps fairly well. The author is limited by not being a dog, and having only a clever primate’s language, insight and empathy to describe the thoughts and feelings of a dog re-wilding. London was also limited by the science of the day. Still, London has crafted a joyous exploration of the mental life of a dog as well as occasionally describing the biology of evolution (whether he knew it or not) in deeply moving and insightful ways. His metaphor is often memory (instinct he suggests being the memory of ancestors for instance). I’m not sure I would have predicted that the dominance struggles of sled dogs (a subject that takes up a lot Buck’s time and narrative space) could be as interesting as I found it. I have no knowledge of sled dog aggression or behavior from which to draw. So the book only rarely drew my biologist’s side eye. One think London captures perfectly, and without being maudlin, is the love between dogs and owners. It takes Buck a long time to find that human to whom he is perfectly partnered. But find him he does, and it’s hard not to be moved to tears by the passages that describe the relationship between Buck and Jack. I suspect dog lovers will fail to be dry eyed. For better or worse the book is definitely a product of its time. The better is that it is incredibly evocative of geography, time and place. London paints a vivid picture of life sled dogs and drivers and the rugged often violent life in the great north. The worse is that there is a casual language of race that no modern ear will find agreeable. Having read it, I know this is a book I will read again. And what better praise can there be for a book than that?

FIVE SOLID STARS, YES!!!Once again, Lee Child has delivered another winner with this smashing mystery/suspense/thriller story. Normally I’m a bit leery about picking up a book that is over 500 pages long. I would say most of the novels I’ve read are between 250 and 350 pages. However, I know I can count on this author, and Running Blind (or The Visitor) didn’t disappoint me one bit. I enjoyed every single page of it, and of course, there was never a dull moment. I was drawn into the story within the first few pages and it kept me wondering and guessing who the hell this killer was throughout the entire book!I could feel the tension starting to ramp up when I reached the beginning of chapter 2, and it became more and more intense as I read further into the story. Every twist and turn made me even more curious about the killer’s motive. And by the end, I was surprised at the turn of events. I must admit, I never thought it would end this way, but well, it didn’t really matter because I was pleased anyway!Even though there were only a few action scenes in this book, they were good and I enjoyed them all. The story mostly focused on an investigation which held my attention and kept me engrossed all the way through.Due to plenty twists and turns in this book, it’s difficult for me to write a review without giving the story all away. So, I think I’d better stop right here and let you find out for yourself how brilliant it is.By the way, this is a gripping crime thriller with an ingenious plot, appealing characters, and stunning twists. Fans of the genre shouldn’t miss out on this one.On to the next book!

This isn't a review, because I just started reading this book, but I couldn't help sharing my irritation.I like Lee Child's storytelling skills, and Jack Reacher is a fun character to read about.Unfortunately, his prose is like fingernails on a chalkboard. Most irritating of all, it's not irredeemably bad, it just needs a good editor. Who is Lee Child's editor? Does he even have one?For instance:"Are you Jack Reacher?" the guy asked for the third time.Reacher set his bottle on the table and shook his head."No," he lied.We, the readers, are fully aware this man is Reacher, because we've been told so at least a dozen times in the past three pages. "He lied" is unnecessary and stupid. It would have had more impact had Child simply written "No," he said.""Who wants him?" Reacher asked."My client," Costello said. "Lady called Mrs. Jacob."Reacher sipped water. The name meant nothing to him. Jacob? Never heard of any such person.The line "Jacob? Never heard of any such person," should be deleted from the page, burned, and flushed down the toilet.A few pages later, Reacher enjoys a "steak that hung off both sides of the plate at once."Is there any way for a steak to hang off both sides of a plate not at once? Are these two, irritating little words there to ensure we know that this isn't one of those steaks that hangs off both sides of the plate, but not at the same time, because it has legs and walks back and forth?I could go on and on, but I won't. Tough guy characters need tough-guy prose. To properly craft terse, tough-guy prose, Child needs a good editor. He doesn't have one.--update--OK, I finished. Of the first three novels about Jack Reacher, this was far and away my least favorite. Besides the poorly edited, hackneyed prose, the story takes forever to get going. The first two Reacher books both have slam-bang openings that carry the reader through some of the more boring bits, but this one doesn't, which makes all the repeated verbs and interminably long descriptions of people doing things harder to get through. The first 200 pages could have been edited down to 75, and pages 200-400 could have been edited down to 100. The climactic 150 pages are pretty good, but it takes too long to get there. The first two Reacher books weren't great, but they weren't boring. Unfortunately this one is. It could have been a tight 325-page thriller, but it's a bloated 550-page snoozer. Comparisons to Hammett and Chandler are way off. If anything, Lee Child is a higher quality Don Pendleton.
