The current Iraq crisis is only the latest example. Washington and London declared Iraq a "rogue state," a threat to its neighbors and to the entire world, an "outlaw nation" led by a reincarnation of Hitler who must be contained by the guardians of world order, the United States and its British "junior partner," to adopt the term ruefully employed by the British foreign office half a century ago. The concept merits a close look. [...]A secret 1995 study of the Strategic Command, which is responsible for the strategic nuclear arsenal, outlines the basic thinking. Released through the Freedom of Information Act, the study, Essentials of Post-Cold War Deterrence, "shows how the United States shifted its deterrent strategy from the defunct Soviet Union to so-called rogue states such as Iraq, Libya, Cuba and North Korea," AP reports. The study advocates that the US exploit its nuclear arsenal to portray itself as "irrational and vindictive if its vital interests are attacked." That "should be a part of the national persona we project to all adversaries," in particular the "rogue states." "It hurts to portray ourselves as too fully rational and cool-headed," let alone committed to such silliness as international law and treaty obligations. Benjamin Franklin defined “the father of the nation” as the man who “removed Natives to give his own people room.” De Tocqueville was impressed with how America’s nastiest violence didn’t stick to them morally. He said, it was impossible to destroy people with “more respect for the laws of humanity”. Of Washington’s merciless attack on the Iroquois in 1799, Noam writes, “Rarely have hypocrisy and moral cowardice been so explicit, and admired with such reverence for centuries.” Only in the 1960’s did this formerly secret part of our history come to light, leading Noam to see Leftist historical revisionism as another reason the 60’s mainstream counterculture had to be stopped by the elite (Trilateral Commission, etc.). “The primary concern of U.S. foreign policy is to guarantee the freedom to rob and exploit. Elsewhere I (meaning Noam) have referred to this as ‘the Fifth Freedom’, one that was not enunciated by Franklin Delano Roosevelt.” In the third world, the victim of the Fifth Freedom is usually the indigenous. National Security does not mean security of the People, it means security of the securing of the Fifth Freedom. “Successful independent development in a poor country subjected to U.S. control might inspire others facing similar problems to pursue the same course, so that the whole system of imperial domination will erode.” The American press continues to never mention the huge American security risk of “false alarms that could be perceived as Nuclear attacks in the range of 43 to 255 per year.” In just one case, Stanislav Petrov’s refusal of orders stopped a global nuclear war from being triggered. In 1786, Thomas Jefferson said the plan was to take both North and South America in time, and that the Spanish in Latin America were acting merely as placeholders for us. Simon Bolivar soon after referred to the U.S. as “destined to plague and torment the continent in the name of freedom.” Then Noam reveals an odious Woodrow Wilson private quote before he became President about how we will do what we want “even if the sovereignty of unwilling nations be outraged in the process.” Wilson was soon to invade both Mexico and Hispaniola to begin their “outrage”. Then this book includes the most important paragraph from the 1948 George Kennan Planning Study (which every American should read), about how we should be an unapologetic empire and ignore all empathetic urgings about the victims. This chilling document was top secret for good reason. “The idea that the government has direct responsibility for the welfare of the people” was considered by planners such as George Kennan (actually considered a dove) to be communism. And communists are traitors. The job of the US in Latin America became “to eliminate the danger of independent political developments.” US planners have long known know the best way to stop nationalism is through “domestic military forces” – in other Noam books, he refers to this as the switch from external to internal security – a turn against one’s own population. The late 40’s planners had written that it would take 15 or 20 years for Russia just to get over “its war time losses” – naturally to keep the Cold War afloat, such info was kept from the American people. Noam brilliantly points out that from the US elite vantage point in post-war Europe, “the threat in Europe was Democratic politics” (Greece, and Italy) The threat was not Soviet aggression but any form of national capitalism plotting its own course. “They may spread the virus of independence, freedom and concern for human welfare, infecting regions beyond.” The US began a post-war “program, worldwide in scope, to destroy the anti-fascist resistance and popular organizations associated with it”. For example, US forces moved through Italy restoring fascists to power “while dispersing the resistance, which had fought courageously against six Nazi divisions.” Noam mentions the death toll of 30-40,000 peasant South Koreans on Cheju Island, due to US interference and Thailand’s U.S. sponsored candidate, Songkram who brought child slavery, and massive corruption. Having read over 40 books by Noam, this may be my favorite. This book is so densely packed with goodies that every American should read and know. Normally, I can distill any Goodreads book in one page of bullet points but this time it took me only to page 35! To continue this book review to the end would mean posting something five times this length, so I have cut it here. I used to think if Americans read one book it should be Howard Zinn’s People’s History. Now, I’d say read this book first because this book will tell you (get the new Haymarket reissue with the white cover) page for page, more truth about American History and Foreign Policy than any other single book I’ve read. 

Chomsky's linguistics work has revolutionized our understanding of language. These nontechnical Reflections consider the point &amp; purpose of studying language, exploring some of the more general intellectual implications that result from linguistic study. The considered are classical ones. From Plato to the present time, philosophers have been baffled &amp; intrigued by how humans, with limited personal experience, achieve such rich systems of knowledge, beliefs &amp; values—systems that guide their actions &amp; interpretations of experience. In answer to this fundamental question, he argues that the growth of language is analogous to the development of a bodily organ &amp; is in large measure predetermined by genetic factors. The environmental crisis under way is unique in human history. It is a true existential crisis. Those alive today will decide the fate of humanity. Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn) is a retired widow, living in a small apartment. She spends most of her time watching TV, especially a particular self-help show. She has delusions of rising above her current dull existence by being a guest on that show. Her son, Harry (Jared Leto) is a junkie but along with his friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) has visions of making it big by becoming a drug dealer. Harry's girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) could be fashion designer or artist but is swept along in Harry's drug-centric world. Meanwhile Sara has developed an addiction of her own. She desperately wants to lose weight and so goes on a crash course involving popping pills, pills which turn out to be very addictive and harmful to her mental state.

Malèna is about the peril of a beauty through the eyes of a 12 year old kid named Renato. He experiences three things on the same day, beginning of war, getting a bike and sees the arrival of Malèna in town. Through his eyes, we see the curse of beauty and loneliness of Malena, whose husband is presumed to be dead, and through his soul we see his love for her.

Travis Bickle is an ex-Marine and Vietnam War veteran living in New York City. As he suffers from insomnia, he spends his time working as a taxi driver at night, watching porn movies at seedy cinemas during the day, or thinking about how the world, New York in particular, has deteriorated into a cesspool. He's a loner who has strong opinions about what is right and wrong with mankind. For him, the one bright spot in New York humanity is Betsy, a worker on the presidential nomination campaign of Senator Charles Palantine. He becomes obsessed with her. After an incident with her, he believes he has to do whatever he needs to make the world a better place in his opinion. One of his priorities is to be the savior for Iris, a twelve-year-old runaway and prostitute who he believes wants out of the profession and under the thumb of her pimp and lover Matthew.

Henry Hill might be a small time gangster, who may have taken part in a robbery with Jimmy Conway and Tommy De Vito, two other gangsters who might have set their sights a bit higher. His two partners could kill off everyone else involved in the robbery, and slowly start to think about climbing up through the hierarchy of the Mob. Henry, however, might be badly affected by his partners' success, but will he consider stooping low enough to bring about the downfall of Jimmy and Tommy?

In the early 1990s, Jordan Belfort teamed with his partner Donny Azoff and started brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont. After his wife, Alice, tells him about her sexual fantasies, William Harford sets out for a night of sexual adventure. After several less than successful encounters, he meets an old friend, Nick Nightingale--now a musician--who tells him of strange sex parties where he is required to play the piano blindfolded. All the men at the party are costumed and wear masks while the women are all young and beautiful. Harford manages to find an appropriate costume and heads out to the party. Once there, however, he is warned by someone who recognizes him, despite the mask, that he is in great danger. He manages to extricate himself, but the threats prove to be quite real and sinister.

Tony Montana manages to leave Cuba during the Mariel exodus of 1980. He finds himself in a Florida refugee camp but his friend Manny has a way out for them: undertake a contract killing and arrangements will be made to get a green card. He's soon working for drug dealer Frank Lopez and shows his mettle when a deal with Colombian drug dealers goes bad. He also brings a new level of violence to Miami. Tony is protective of his younger sister but his mother knows what he does for a living and disowns him. Tony is impatient and wants it all however, including Frank's empire and his mistress Elvira Hancock. Once at the top however, Tony's outrageous actions make him a target and everything comes crumbling down.

Eccentric actor Daniel Hillard is an amusing and caring father. But after a disastrous birthday party for his son, Chris, his wife, Miranda, draws the line and files a divorce. He can see their three children only once a week which doesn't sit well with him. He also holds a job at a TV studio as a shipping clerk under the recommendation of his liason. But when Miranda puts out an ad for a nanny, he takes it upon himself to make a disguise as a British lady named Mrs. Doubtfire. And he must also deal with Miranda's new boyfriend, Stu Dunemyer.

Borat Sagdiyev is a TV reporter of a popular show in Kazakhstan as Kazakhstan's sixth most famous man and a leading journalist. He is sent from his home to America by his government to make a documentary about American society and culture. Borat takes a course in New York City to understand American humor. While watching Baywatch on TV, Borat discovers how beautiful their women are in the form of C. J. Parker, who was played by actress Pamela Anderson who hails from Malibu, California. He decides to go on a cross-country road trip to California in a quest to make her his wife and take her back to his country. On his journey Borat and his producer encounter a country full of strange and wonderful Americans, real people in real chaotic situations with hysterical consequences.

2006 mockumentary comedy film directed by Larry Charles

Maximus is a powerful Roman general, loved by the people and the aging Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Before his death, the Emperor chooses Maximus to be his heir over his own son, Commodus, and a power struggle leaves Maximus and his family condemned to death. The powerful general is unable to save his family, and his loss of will allows him to get captured and put into the Gladiator games until he dies. The only desire that fuels him now is the chance to rise to the top so that he will be able to look into the eyes of the man who will feel his revenge.

Memphis-based FedEx operations executive Chuck Noland and grad student Kelly Frears have long dated and lived together, and despite each being the love of the other's life, have not gotten married because of their respective busy schedules, especially Chuck's as he is more often on business trips than he is at home. That marital status changes when on Christmas Day 1995 as Chuck is rushing off to catch yet another FedEx plane for a business trip, he gives Kelly a ring. That flight experiences technical difficulties, and goes down somewhere in the south Pacific. In a life raft, a relatively unharmed Chuck washes up on shore what he will learn is a deserted island, he unaware what has happened to any of his fellow flight mates, or the plane. However several of the packages on board for delivery do wash up on shore with him, those packages which he initially treats with respect. Chuck realizes that his priority is survival - which primarily means food, water, shelter and fire - and rescue. But survival is also in an emotional sense. To fulfill that emotional need, he has an heirloom pocket watch with Kelly's photo that she gave him as a Christmas present, and eventually opening the FedEx packages, a Wilson volleyball on which he paints a face and which he names Wilson. As time progresses, Chuck goes through a range of emotions, but if rescue is ever in the cards, he realizes that he has to find a way to get off the island, which is seemingly impossible in his circumstance due to the strong on shore surf he cannot get beyond without assistance. What Chuck may not fully realize is the longer he is not rescued, the harder it will be for him to return to his old life in its entirety if he ever is rescued. Although the thought of Kelly is what largely keeps him motivated to be rescued, Kelly, who probably believes him to be dead, may have moved on emotionally from him in the intervening time.

Arthur Fleck works as a clown and is an aspiring stand-up comic. He has mental health issues, part of which involves uncontrollable laughter.
