Oh. My. God. Words cannot describe how much I loved this book. Which is kind of pathetic, since I'm a writer. ;-P And for someone who doesn't read mysteries, if you can get me interested in one, you know it's good!Michael Hoeye's work is an example of world-building at its best. In a realm like-our-own-and-yet-not, his plot is immediately engaging. The adult characters in the book, sly humor, and universal themes (such as "what is real beauty?") will make this a fun read for grown-ups as well as kids. With a rollicking cast, terrific wordplay, great twist at the end, and scrumptious details, it's an old-fashioned childhood book to treasure.As for folks here who weren't crazy about the fact the story had mice . . . well, the title IS Time Stops for No Mouse! I, for one, love the character of Tantamoq, and cannot wait to read about his next adventure.

Originally published in 1936, this compilation of eleven short stories is loaded with enough wit and signature Wodehouse style of narration, which will engulf the reader in a blanket of cozy comfort.This collection, which contains eight Eggs, Beans And Crumpets tales featuring the members of the Drones club and three Angler’s Rest stories featuring Mr. Mulliner has some of the most hilarious &amp; recognizable characters created by Wodehouse – other than Bertie Wooster and Jeeves – making their appearance. One of my favorite Wodehouse characters, Uncle Fred along with his nephew Pongo Twistleton makes their debut in one of the short stories featuring the Drones club in this anthology. The short stories in this anthology present sidesplitting accounts of upper-class characters getting muddled in preposterous situations often involving monetary issues, pursuit of love, eccentric uncles and unsentimental aunts. Like other Wodehouse tales these tales brim with excellent usage of verbal humor, engaging metaphors, fascinating descriptions of the characters and ridiculously funny situations which will leave the reader laughing in a blissful state of mind. Tales like ‘The Amazing Hat Mystery’, ‘Goodbye to all cats’, ‘Uncle Fred Flits By’ and ‘Archibald and the masses’ can be regarded as some of the very best short stories ever written by Wodehouse.If you are looking for a book that is meant for light-hearted reading with a heavy dose of humor then Young Men in Spats will not disappoint you.

A Pelican at Blandings, the 11th book in the Blandings Castle series, was a big disappointment for me. I always expect P.G. Wodehouse to buck me up with his humor, but this one lacked the funny.It's typically Wodehousian in its convoluted plot, but the writing feels dull. I have a tendency to blame the author's mounting years, after all he was about 88 when he wrote this, however he did go on to write another half dozen or so novels, and the one or two I've read were much better than this.No, the problem is that this feels more like one of his early works where romance tended to trump comedy. The plot is fine, but the comedic edge is missing. There's too much exposition all together, but also redundant explanations, especially in the dialogue, which in other books Wodehouse was smart to gloss over. Sure it's important to keep your readers abreast of the action, but at some point you need to be aware not to beat them over the head with it. Ah well, I still have about 30 or 40 more Wodehouses to read. I'm sure there are some good ones left!

A 2019 re-read confirms this review.Written in 1970 when Wodehouse was 89, this novel really is up to a high standard. Felicitous phrasing and witticism alongside a well-constructed plot."Not being a dentist turns out to be a stroke of good luck for Jerry. If he were, he would not have been summoned to sit on the jury with the delightful Jane, with whom he falls instantly in love. Only then does the sudden realization that he is already engaged to Vera Upshaw strike him. Vera has been insisting that Jerry is entitled to his inheritance, currently kept in trust by Uncles Crispin and Willoughby. Meanwhile, Willoughby is thrilled at being the proud owner of Gainsborough’s small painting of one of his ancestors, called The Girl in Blue, but when she goes missing, believed stolen, Jerry is called upon to track her down, wherever she may be …"Everyone gravitates to impoverished Crispin's paying guest country house, where debt collectors, police constables, gold-diggers, and millionaires, as well as the main characters engage in theft, wooing, drinking, lake-ducking, etc.’Lovely stuff.

What ho?! A smashing early Wodehouse? Topping!I thought I'd sworn off early Wodehouse works. The one's I've read so far have been blah. Just drippy romances with the lightest of comedy touches. Nothing worth wasting time on. However, I grabbed this one on audiobook because I saw that it was narrated by Jonathan Cecil, who does a corking good job with the English toff voice. As far as voicing the upperclass English twit, Cecil's top of his class!Money for Nothing follows a common Wodehouse template of love combined with caper. Hijinks always ensue! Perhaps another reason I enjoyed this one so much was that it reminds me so very much of a typical Jeeves &amp; Wooster book. The characters and setting have an old shoe familiarity. In fact some of these characters are recurring:The action is mostly set at Rudge Hall, home to miser Lester Carmody, and at Healthward Ho, a health farm run by "Chimp" Twist, along with his cohorts "Soapy" and "Dolly" Molloy, who all previously appeared in Sam the Sudden (1925), and returned in Money in the Bank (1946). Hugo Carmody, Lester's nephew, and his friend Ronnie Fish also appear at Blandings Castle, home of Ronnie's uncle Lord Emsworth, in Summer Lightning (1929) and Heavy Weather (1933). - WikipediaThe main point is, I knew just who was who, even though they were all technically new to me. When you're looking for a reliable laugh, the same old same old isn't always a bad thing. And this book ain't a bad thing!

"What if he does think you the world’s premier louse? Don’t we all?"Poor Bertie cannot catch a break. Despite the quote above everybody and their sister around London area run to him to happily unload their troubles on him leaving the guy, to use one of the book expressions, in soup. This time it happened innocently enough. His (and mine too) favorite Aunt Dahlia asked him to accompany one boring couple she knew to a dinner at a London restaurant. It would be pointless to try describing crazy happenings that followed, but sufficient to say a very convincing invitation from his aunt to visit her prompted Bertie to rush for a friendly visit:"Bertie, you worm, your early presence desired. Drop everything and come down here pronto, prepared for lengthy visit. Urgently need you to buck up a blighter with whiskers. Love. Travers."I mean, who can resist such force of persuasion? Sufficient to say during this visit Bertie came closest to being beaten up, getting married, arrested for theft, and other equally unpleasant outcomes. The things we all do for our relatives! Here would be the good time to mention Aunt Dahlia again. I love the old girl. Just her presence promotes an average installment of the series into a good one and a good one into a great classic of humorous literature. This time unfortunately it was the former as I would not qualify the book as very funny overall, but it has very amusing moments. It also has Aunt Dahlia who alone raised the rating by one star. It should be obvious that I liked this book well enough, but did not love it. At least unlike the previous one Bertie is present here and the usual chemistry between him and Jeeves works. Like this time Bertie decided to grow mustaches which Jeeves strongly disapproved. What to say, not everybody can grow them well enough to rival Hercule Poirot.
