I need a way to rate the book and then a way to separately rate the edition I got. I have the audio I got from OverDrive and the gain is so low that with the recording turned up all the way, my speakers turned up all the way and going into my computers audio controls and jacking them up all the way I could barely hear it. Recording value -1 star.The book is a return to the world of the original Shannara trilogy though much later. magic is outlawed and practically gone (funny how often that seems to happen in "fantasy worlds") Our hero(es) are tasked with saving the world, by bringing magic back, by finding the Sword of Shannara. (Hey just because that's how this whole series started don't knock it. When you get a good plot idea [or find a good plot idea] like "recovering a magic sword" use it as often as possible....right?)Anyway, did you get that? It's sort of a multilevel quest. They have to bring back magic to save the world, but they have to find the Sword of Shannara to bring back magic. Well, to find the truth about magic and saving the world.Now if you find that a bit convoluted, "shame on you how dare you criticize a classic work of fantasy"? At least that's the reaction I tend to get when i express opinions like that.Go figure.And by the way...someone's pretty ungrateful as there was already a quest to find the Sword of Shannara and when it was found someone obviously didn't take care of it, AND it seems they've lost the Elf Stones to!!!!We just can't have nice things....Not a bad book. If you get the audio I got, good luck on actually being able to hear it however. *Just had to correct a word.

So, I enjoyed these books. Not the most intellectual, but for a fantasy lover that is looking for a fun but easy read, these are good. The fourth book ends without wrapping up all the loose ends, to entice you to his next series I'm sure, but wraps up enough to not leave the reader unsatisfied.The characters of these books are basically well developed D&amp;D characters, which is what the Forgotten Realm books are all based on. They have the traits that are expected and, yet, Salvatore finds interesting ways to tweak the basic D&amp;D molds just a little, to make the characters different and interesting. But because they are based on a specific mold, the characters tend to not have too much depth (thus adding to the book’s fun read, but not too thought provoking status). I would say that Salvatore has two main strengths in the books I have read so far. His playing of the characters off of one another is wonderful, often making me laugh out loud while reading. The camaraderie of the companions seems real and sincere, not forced. His other strength is in his detail of battle scenes, especially fights involving the main character, Drizzt. You feel like you’re in the action, without him adding so many details that they weigh down and slow the action.

Servant of the Shard is the latest offering from New York Times bestselling author R. A. Salvatore, best known for his immensely popular Forgotten Realms novels. When Salvatore was pitching this book idea, I imagine his brainstorm chart began with the following question: what would happen if I took a dash of Robin Hood, a pinch of the Lone Ranger and more than a couple of helpings of Zorro, and threw it all in a blender with all the classic fantasy cliches?To be fair, in the end, all of this wasn't really all that bad of a mix. Yeah, I'll admit that the whole premise behind the Bransen character might seem a bit overcooked and juvenile--even for a fantasy character-- but I've always had a soft spot for romantic heroes and the epic, far-fetched nature of fantasy fiction, so consider my review a lot more lenient in this assessment. Mind, less patient readers will find that the first half of the book is rather slow moving. Establishing the background and the setting is always the tricky bit with fantasy novels. The main characters get a bit of a backseat as the panorama expands to include as much of the main ideas and points that will potentially be built up on as the series progresses. Salvatore is a bit clumsy in his pacing here, and it's clear he must have been frustrated with this part of the story, because as soon as all the players and key events are set in place, the narrative takes on a whole new character... and in the last hundred pages or so, you can't put the book down. Especially if you're a bit of a swashbuckling adventure freak like me. Salvatore isn't a very talented writer, but he is good at what he does and that is commercial science fiction and fantasy. His style is like one of grandma's no-name brand digestive sugar-cookies. It's a homely staple you wouldn't particularly go out of your way to buy on your own, but if it's right in front of you, it's flavorful enough that you won't really say "no" to second helpings... or the next chapter, as is the case here. I can't say I was entirely overwhelmed by the originality in the ideas here, but "The Highwayman" was at the very least an entertaining read and I haven't the heart to give it any less than three stars.

”The Druids stepped back as the first of those things slouched into the light. It was a Skull Bearer, hunched and massive within its black cloak, claws extended before it. All sharp edges and flat planes, all hardness and bulk, it filled the corridor and seemed to suck away the very air. Red eyes burned into the three who cowered before it, and it shoved its way past them disdainfully. Leathery wings beat softly. With a hiss of satisfaction, it seized the young Elven guard, ripped out his throat, and cast him aside. The Druids flinched as the rending sprayed them with the victim’s blood.”The Druids have been crippled by the horror of the misuse of magic in the first war of the races, which destroyed the old world and sent the race of man into banishment. The Druids have made themselves toothless, shut up with their books and minor spells in the castle keep of Paranor. When Bremen appears, demanding to see the council to warn them of the coming dangers, the last thing they want to do is believe a druid who has been cast out. They’d have done well to listen. The Warlock Lord, Brona, a druid who has been twisted by dark magic, has risen in the north and has browbeaten the trolls into an army of chaos. He has skull bearers, other druids who have been warped into sadistic, brutal, powerful monsters. He is marching south, and the first he will come for are the druids. Bremen can only convince a small band of druids to leave the keep and come with him. Magic will have to be used again, and it may even need the help of the old sciences as well. There is little time to convince the Races to come together as one. This reminds me of the slow responses by countries who were still recovering from the devastation of World War One and couldn’t even fathom the possibility of having to fight yet another world war. ”Only by uniting could the free Races hope to prevail. But it would take time for them to decide to do this if left to their own devices. Politics would slow any decision making. Self-interest would generate an ill-advised caution. The free Races would debate and consider and be made slaves before they realized what had happened to them.”If Hitler hadn’t dithered at Dunkirk, the war might very well have been over before the US could get in the war. In this case, the Dwarves are nearly destroyed before the Elves can muster their army for war. Bremen has a vision of a sword, a very special sword, made with magic and old science and held by a great Elven leader. Like with most visions, clarity is an issue. Bremen dispatches his small band in various directions on different quests as he tries to discover the proper way forward to destroy something seemingly too powerful to stop. ”Dust began to rise from the parched plains, the wind stirring it in wild clouds, and the size of the army seemed to swell even more, to rise on the dust as if fed by it. The silence shattered, and the light changed. In the roil of the dust and thunder of the army’s coming, Death lifted its head in expectation and looked about.”I approached the Shannara canon ass backwards. I watched the TV show The Shannara Chronicles before I decided to approach the books. I rarely do this, but in this case, it might end up working out okay. I was itching, of course, to read The Sword of Shannara, the first and most lauded of the Shannara Chronicles, but after some research, I decided to read First King of Shannara, a prequel to the trilogy. This was a dicey decision because the prequel is far from the book that Sword pertains to be, but I was interested in learning about the lead up to what I already knew about Shannara. I hope that this means that I will enjoy Sword more because I have more background material already lodged in my head before reading the first page. There is a bit of frothing at the mouth about Terry Brooks and the similarities between his world of Shannara and the world of J. R. R. Tolkien. I’m far from an expert on fantasy novels. In fact, I rarely read them, but I do find that throwing one in the reading queue occasionally does pleasantly shake me out of my reading comfort zone. In this case, I did become caught up in the quest aspects of the novel and enjoyed taking an hour or so a day to lose myself in the magical wilds of Shannara. I chose to see Brooks' Shannara books as an ode to Tolkien. I perfectly understand Tolkien purists choosing to see this series as a ripoff. Given the fact that Brooks has published many books in the realm of Shannara to great acclaim, I would say that most fantasy readers have chosen to see the series the same way I do. Please Tolkien purists, do not send large, wart infested trolls after me or ninja dwarf assassins or Elven arrow sharpshooters or *shudder* a Skull Bearer. I will warn you, I do have a fierce Scottish Terrier who prefers a bit of variety in her diet...if you know what I mean. Meh. Just, meh. Definitely a low point in the series. As with the previous book in the series, there are two story lines going on throughout the entire book.  1) Quester, the wizard thinks that he has found the magic that allows him to turn Abernathy back from the dog form, in which he is stuck, to his natural human form. The catch? It requires Ben to give Abernathy the medallion that makes Ben king of Landover. Surprise, surprise, something goes wrong and Abernathy is transported back to Ben's old world (our world), and in his place appears a bottle. Ben and Willow go back to our world to find Abernathy and get the bottle.2) This bottle holds a Darkling, something of a genie in a bottle. It grants wishes, but it only draws on the wishers flaws. The bottle is stolen and is making its way around Landover, wrecking havoc. Quester is sent to retrieve the bottle.Neither of these story lines are particularly strong, and they simply don't weave well together. Plot #2 feels plodding and gets in the way of the far more interesting, Plot #1. Both plots actually suffer from the way they are weaved together. The flow is broken repeatedly, and not in a "Oh! I want to know what happens next!" sort of way, but in a "Oh! Back to this now?" sort of way. Simply, no good.I also felt as though I'd already read this story. Ben loses medallion. Ben searches for medallion. It's the same basic story as the last book. The last 40 pages or so saves the entire book, however. They really are the most interesting pages because it didn't feel like more of the same. Ben's still a clueless idiot, but at least he's clever from time-to-time in this novel of Landover. Willow is still a sadly underused character. Quester has finally become half competent. Abernathy, well, Abernathy's still a sullen douche - which makes him the most well rounded character of the bunch.

Living in peaceful Shady Vale, Shea Ohmsford knew little of the troubles that plagued the rest of the world. Then the giant, forbidding Allanon revealed that the supposedly dead Warlock Lord was plotting to destroy the world. The sole weapon against this Power of Darkness was the Sword of Shannara, which could only be used by a true heir of Shannara--Shea being the last of the bloodline, upon whom all hope rested. Soon a Skull Bearer, dread minion of Evil, flew into the Vale, seeking to destroy Shea. To save the Vale, Shea fled, drawing the Skull Bearer after him....

I am revisiting the Landover series and just finished The Tangle Box. I loved that this book brought in some new surprises. I don't want to spoil anything but I was surprisingly shocked by Bigger's Karmic departure at the end of the book, as well as the relationship between Ben and Nightshade and of course the birth of Ben and Willow's daughter."The Tangle Box" is an entertaining enough tale if you're looking for pleasant escapism. Deepening characters and expanding relationships, this bodes well for future books in the "Landover" series and is sure to be a hit with fans - Brooks even throws in a quick reference to "The Lord of the Rings" when Biggar suggests he and Horris escape to the world where the people with the "big furry feet live".However, for newcomers it's best not to start reading here; retrace your steps till you find the previous books in the series: "Magic Kingdom for Sale/Sold!", "Wizard at Large" and "The Black Unicorn."

The King of Landover has had his identity stolen by an evil wizard! Everyone believes the wizard to be Ben Holiday, the King, and Ben Holiday appears to them as a stranger. He is cast out of his castle by his friends. Thus begins a journey searching for the woman, Willow, who in turn is on a journey looking for the Black Unicorn. This is a tale of magic, demons, dragons, unicorns, self-discovery and understanding, and love.This was a fun read. When my ex's dad bought me the first book in the series years ago, when I finished it, I had turned to my ex and said, "Wow, that was campy fantasy." I hold by that assessment. It felt like fun, campy, classic fantasy.My favorite character by far, was a Prism Cat from the fairy realm, named Edgewood Dirk. Ben Holiday is not the brightest crayon in the box, by a long shot and Dirk spends all of his time cat-slapping sense into him. Of course, this sense takes almost 220 pages to sink in. I had the "twist" figured out pretty quickly; Ben, however, had to have it kicked into him by a talking cat. The themes were strong; though, from time to time, I felt like I was being bludgeoned by said themes with a brick, because Ben was just so oblivious.Ben spends the entire book looking for this sylph, Willow. He obsesses over her at every fucking turn and yet, it takes him until the very very end to admit to himself that he (view spoiler)[is in love. (hide spoiler)]
