I didn't believe a word of this and it's not like this was a first novel, it was his 19th, so I'm thinking that he was maybe drunk in charge of a typewriter or was just having a real bad month, or something. First off, I don't like characters called Doc. Even if they're doctors. This is a personal quirk, so I tried to disregard it. Second, if this Doc McCoy is such an all-round criminal mastermind – and that is the very term used on p 58 - groan! – how come he got caught and went down for a 20 stretch in the first place? Third, didn't he notice that his right-hand man for the bank heist was a drooling psycho who was quite likely to fuck up the whole caper? Fourth, I don't think a clan of "hill people, rebels and outlaws…people with a very real sense of honor" (the boss of which is a six-foot woman called Ma - of course she is!) would be old friends with this superior criminal mastermind at all since all he does is dishonourably rob, kill and smirk. I think Jim Thompson just couldn't be bothered and called up Central Noir Agencies in 1958 and said "Yeah, I need a brainy criminal, a tough guy with mental problems, a cute wifey type, you know, perky blonde, yeah, and a bunch of honourable hill people… how soon can you get them over here?"Fifth, every so often Jim Thompson likes to impart his knowledge of the underworld to the reader, so he will say things like :Doc prowled about the cabin, automatically inspecting it as he did any place that was strange to him. He was looking for nothing in particular. Simply looking. Most top-drawer criminals have this habit.  Eyes must be rolled and a chorus of "you think, Jim, you think?" spring spontaneously from the lips of even the most well-disposed reader. Sixth, the last 20 pages of this absurd melodrama change gear so violently that I think the gear stick must have come right off. The spray-on tough realism of the first 120 pages is abandoned and now we get some kind of Kafkaesque dreamy symbolism all about ultimate justice or karma or sumpin. At this point my eyes were beyond rolling. They could roll no more.

2020I'm re-reading the books because we just watched the Netflix show and it made me think about how much I loved this story. This is still one of my all-time favorite graphic novels and if you haven't read it yet, I honestly can't recommend it enough. 2018I was gifted the beautiful hardback set of these a while back and just finished re-reading the first book...again. Can't believe how much I'd forgotten! The gist is that the violent murder of their father by two teens sends the three children and their mother to their dad's ancestral home. Keyhouse. Layer by layer the story of why their father was killed, what happened to them during the time the killers were in their house, and how the family is coping, starts coming together to paint a heart-wrenching tale. Then add a layer of mystery to the house itself, with its strange and magical keys that keep popping up, and you've got something amazing to read. Because there's a secret history to everything their father had long ago forgotten about the house, and the youngest child, Bode, is starting to discover it all over again.And fuck! It's creepy as hell!Locke &amp; Key easily makes my Top 10 favorite graphic novel series. Brrrrr.The artwork perfectly complements the creeptastic storyline in this. What else can I say? Book One is apparently volumes 1 &amp; 2, but even though I've already read and reviewed the first one, I still ended up reading most* of it again as a refresher. *In other words, I skimmed the first few pages, realized I'd forgotten all of the plot details, and started reading in earnest immediately.Stop judging me, Rick!Since I'm somewhat late to The Walking Dead phenomenon (Kelly has theorized that I'm some sort of ALIEN goddess from the stars), I'm going to try not to spoil anything for the other people from my planet. Planet Anne! I like the sound of that! It can be a safe haven for all the sad little geriatric aliens in the multiverse.  So they spelled it wrong on purpose? Whyyyyyyyy?! Why do you people wanna screw with me like this?I've only recently mastered the art of LOLing properly!For years, I thought it was some odd sound people made when they laughed. Yes. Really. I mean, I have an obnoxious laugh, so I just assumed others did as well...Whatever, I can now LOL at things just like the kids!Unfortunately, I still can't Twit, and I have no idea how to Tumble. Baby steps, baby steps...Um, ok. What was my original point? Crap. No idea.Oh, yes! The Walking Dead!  Now, I've mentioned this before, but I simply LOVE that the zombies in this series are of the shuffle-shuffle variety, and not the zoom-zoom class. You have to be totally surprised by one of these suckers in order for it to get it's undead jaws on you. All that's required of these characters to survive is to avoid dark alleys, creepy basements, thickly wooded areas, and nutters who keep pet zombies in their barns hoarder-style. I firmly believe that if the Zombie Apocalypse happens, and these are what I'm faced with, I could speed-walk my way to safety. Me + Snazzy Shorts = Escaping Like A Boss!The point is ( there really is a point this time!), the real monsters in The Walking Dead aren't the zombies. The surviving humans are far more monstrous than any of the rotting corpses. You would think that if humanity was on the brink of extinction, we'd all band together like extras in a Coca Cola commercial, right? If you've never read Invincible, this is a great way to start. It's the first 9 trades plus a couple of odds and ends. I would recommend reading this digitally because a physical copy is going to be ridiculously hefty to lug around. This is my second time through the series if that gives you any indication of how much I enjoyed it. I read the original trades and used these compendiums as an excuse to read it again.Invincible begins as your standard teenage superhero story. Invincible's dad is basically the Superman of this world. Mark's been waiting for the last few years to get his powers. When he does, it's the typical Spider-Man type story until the story twists on its heels around issue 10. Kirkman's focus is on character driven moments as Mark grows into being a superhero. That's what makes this series. Plus, Kirkman really knows how to drop those mind blowing cliffhangers. Those of you who have read The Walking Dead will know what I'm talking about.The original artist, Cory Walker, leaves after issue 7, and Ryan Ottley comes on board for almost the entirety of rest of the series. Ottley's art is fantastic. It's dynamic. It's expressive. It's just fun.

3.5 starsI'm trying to get back into this series. I read the 1st volume about 5 years ago and then forgot about it for some reason. &lt;--more than likely because even though it's unique, the premise is so weird that I just didn't care about the characters as much as maybe I should have.But I do like this.It is such and an odd story that you can't help but wonder where it's going, you know?Then again, maybe it's not going anywhere.In case you don't know, the gist is that these two people both discover that time stops for them when they have an orgasm. They meet, have sex, orgasm together (ha!) and realize that they aren't alone anymore, wherein they proceed to explore The Quiet (her word for it) &amp; Cumworld (his word for it) together. Happy times!But the library she works at is in danger of being foreclosed on by the back, so they decide to stop time and rob said bank to save it. &lt;--enter the Sex Police!Who are they? Where do they come from?Are they even real police?And then spoilery things happen.This is a cute comic in a Not For Kids sort of way. What makes it tolerable is that you can tell Fraction &amp; Zdarsky are obviously having a blast writing this thing. And it's all very tongue-in-cheek, which makes for just a fuckton of sex-related puns. Some good, some bad, and most in-between. Do you want to read this?I don't know. I think each person who is contemplating this one needs to dig deep and ask themselves some very important questions. For example: Do I like dick jokes? A lot of dick jokes? Are time-stopping vaginas going to hold my interest? How comfortable am I roaming around in porn stores? Would I wear a Fleshlight as a hat? &lt;--to spice things up around the office? If you answered yes to the majority of those questions, I think Big Hard Sex Criminals is for you. If not, give it a pass.

Beyond their battles with Frank and Hot Lips, Hawkeye, Duke and/or Trapper help unit dentist Painless with a personal crisis, try to figure out if Hot Lips is a true blond, travel to Japan for a work and what they hope is a recreational trip, and hope to win big on a football bet against another unit in which they on the surface are the underdogs.
