Tess Gerritsen writes consistently good books. However, for me, the kind of good they are varies depending upon the era they come from. Never Say Die falls into her romantic thriller category, which is my least favourite category for her work. Don’t get me wrong, the books that fall into this category are still great, but there is far too much of a romantic focus (as the category title would suggest).If you’re a fan of all of Geritsen’s work – by that I mean you have read her early nineties stuff and not just her Rizzoli and Isles books – then by all means give Never Say Die a try. I’m sure you’ll adore it, in its own way, as I did. However, if you have only read her crime thrillers, be aware that you get something quite different in these books.There is the consistent mystery across all of her books. You are always trying to uncover some hidden facts. When it comes to her romance thrillers, though, you have a predetermined ending in a number of ways. You get the lead male. You get the lead female. You know they’re going to get a happily ever after – together. It ruins quite a few aspects of the story for me, with attention being focused upon forming a relationship between the two. Why does this relationship need to be formed? Because we have a consistent main character initial hatred. Alone the thriller aspects are wonderful, if not short, but with the romantic aspect you have a tale of old that has been done many times before.This time the tale of old takes place in the shadow of war. Our lead female character is on a search to find the answers regarding her missing-in-action father. Once half the world away, she is thrown into a mystery with many layers – a mystery where everyone seems to be using her to find her father. Does this mean she is truly searching for a living man, or are people mistaken about who he is? Whatever the case, she is not the only one searching for him. With enemies at her heels, and her life in danger, she turns to the only man that doesn’t have a gun to her head (figurate speaking, of course), although this man seems to have mysterious motives of his own.It’s a storyline that already exists in the genre, but with Gerritsen you’re kept on the edge of your seat throughout as you guess all that is going on. Whilst some of it is predictable, it’s certainly an interesting read.Overall, we still have a four star book. It is a weaker four stars than her Rizzoli and Isles books – the Rizzoli and Isles books are four stars working towards five, for me, whereas this is a four stars with the occasional slip into three star territory (mainly through my inability to deal with too much romance at once) – but it is still a four star read.Certainly give it a read if you enjoy Gerritsen or romantic thriller.

I love the writing of Tess Gerritsen and have read virtually everything she has ever released so it was inevitable that I would get round to reading this book. I enjoyed it and it was fairly well written but if I am honest it's wasn't at the same high standard of most of her other books. Not sure if it's one of her early books written before she established herself but there was something not quite right. Simon Dance, alias Geoffrey Fontaine, fakes his death in a hotel fire in Berlin. His wife of two months, Sarah, is told of his death by State Department agent Nick O’Hara but she is not convinced he is dead and feels sure that he is still alive. Sarah with the help of Nick try to unravel the mystery in an effort to find her husband.The book is full of action lots of twists and turns, a little romance and certainly enough to satisfy fans but it is not her best work.

Homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles are called to the scene of the brutal murder of a young woman. Strange symbols and a cryptic message are clues that lead them to an even stranger group of people who are members of the Mephisto Foundation, a group of scholars who believe in and study the history of evil. Even more disturbing is the discovery that Dr. Joyce O’Donnell is a member and evidence suggests the killer is somehow connected to her. This was a creepy story that focused on one of my least favorite topics. Mythical demons and their spawns are not my cuppa, which negatively influenced my rating. So, if this is a subject you find intriguing, I highly recommend the story as it’s well researched and written. There’s a secondary storyline involving Maura and Daniel Brody that I did find interesting as well as the story surrounding the killer who is identified at the beginning. The narrator, Kathe Mazur, was outstanding as she adeptly grasped the nature of each character, providing distinction and resonance. She also added a creep factor to match the story. Even though this wasn’t my most favorite of the stories in the series, it still was pretty interesting and had an exciting climax. 3.5 stars

Whilst all this is going on, a huge diamond heist takes place, and a fistful of motley characters enter the story, including 'Cousin Avi', 'Boris The Blade', 'Franky Four Fingers' and 'Bullet Tooth Tony'. Things go from bad to worse as it all becomes about the money, the guns, and the damned dog.

Six thugs, who are strangers to each other, are hired by a crime boss, Joe Cabot, to carry out a diamond robbery. Right at the outset, they are given false names with the intention that they won't get too close and will concentrate on the job instead. They are completely sure that the robbery is going to be a success. But, when the police show up right at the time and the site of the robbery, panic spreads amongst the group members, and two of them are killed in the subsequent shootout, along with a few policemen and civilians. When the remaining people assemble at the premeditated rendezvous point (a warehouse), they begin to suspect that one of them is an undercover cop.

A regular girl, Veronica, tries to survive the social jungle of high school by sticking with the three most popular girls at school who are all called Heather. As she meets a sociopath named JD, her life spirals into a continuous cycle of hate, unintentional murder and indifference, as she exacts revenge on her enemies, also known as her best friends.
