I once lived with a man who covered the entire wall of our shared (four people) bathroom with hard-core Dutch pornography. I asked him to take it down and he claimed it couldn’t be removed as it was ‘Art’. We had a yelling match that went for thirty minutes.If you’ve ever shared a home with someone, (a roommate in the US, known as a housemate here in Australia) you most likely have a horror story like this (I hope yours is less gross). If you’ve argued over dishes, gotten annoyed at your roomie’s parties, messy girlfriend/boyfriend or inability to make rent on time you will find something you recognize in He Died with a Falafel in his Hand.Do not read this book if you have a weak stomach, if you despair at the depths of squalor that human beings can sink to, if stories of passive aggressive post-it note battles and weed-smoking lassitude get you down. Thompson, writing scathing, biting Antipodean Gonzo with real humor (his obituary of the corrupt hillbilly dictator of Queensland, Joh Bjelke-Peterson is the rawest, fiercest example of the form I have ever read). He Died with a Falafel in his Hand is hilarious and appalling in equal measure, and should be given to anyone thinking of leaving their parent’s house in favor of shared housing, in order to ready them for the horrors they about to experience.(One word of warning- there are a lot of Australianisms to be found here, and a slang app would be useful. I read this book in New Zealand and thought the often referenced backyard ‘Hills Hoists’ in the book were devices for removing car engines, leaving me with an image of Aussies as a people unreasonably obsessed with car maintenance. It was only three years later when I migrated that I learned that a Hills Hoist is a clothesline, and that Aussies are quite reasonably obsessed with drying their wet clothes.) The current thinking in social work circles is that there are better long-term outcomes for children left with their family in an unstable home, than those removed and placed in foster care. This was in the back of my mind as I read comedian Corey White's recently published memoir, \
  The Prettiest Horse in the Glue Factory\
.The details White shares of his childhood made me sick with fear from the first page. His father adored him but belted his wife and daughters. His mother, a drug addict, would disappear for days at a time. White was sexually abused by a 'friend' of the family, and as a young child he was violent toward his mother and sisters.\
  I drink in my father's anger, see how it makes him glow and other people cower, and I repeat it. \
  I punch my mother in the stomach and call her a stupid slut.\

At age nine, White was in and out of foster care, separated from his sisters and placed in a series of different houses and schools. White was bullied, abused and ignored. He rarely experienced kindness and 'love' was not even in his vocabulary. His time with a woman named Tracey, who had her own children as well as fostering a few, was particularly traumatic.\
  While Tracey's own children swan about, living the high life, the foster children have entered a bizarre arms race of grovelling.\

  Tracey was my penance. That's not to say there weren't other ways I could have been changed. Therapy, love, kindness. But cruelty can also save.\
White's dry humour is evident through out the book but is never overdone -\
  Poverty was a part of life, but it was Australian poverty. There was always enough money to chuck two dollars in a chocolate bar skill tester. No matter how poor we were, we could afford to pay money to not win chocolate.\
The humour is combined with violence - brutal and raw - and some arrestingly beautiful writing.\
  My father takes me to the pub where he drinks beers and bets on horse racing. He speaks of systems, quinellas, exactas, trifectas, quaddies. It is our special paradise. Most of all I adore the smoke, the way it unfurls in the air like ghosts from cigarettes. I love the silence of the men with the occasional eruptions of hope.\
The second part of White's book focuses on his adult years and his addictions. He starts with ice, but notes '...I kicked ice by replacing it with alcohol because life isn't a fairytale.' However, this isn't an addiction memoir, it's a story about how a child learns to love when they have never been shown what love looks like.\
  I was contaminated, mutilated. For years I had believed that love held out the one hope of cleaning me and making me whole. Now I knew the truth. Love was just another way I'd wished in vain to be fixed. There was no salvific silver bullet. What was taken from me when I was young could not be replaced.\
What do I look for in memoirs? The hero's transformation - that defining moment when the course of their life changes direction. Do I think that happens in 'real' life? Yes and no. It's usually a bunch of moments (and memoirs focus on one). In this book, it's hard to pin down that moment. White's 'transformation' is fragile, perhaps a work in progress (and that makes this reader a little worried - I had the same thoughts when I read Liam Pieper and Nic Sheff's memoirs) but it's fair to say that he finishes on firmer ground than that of the first twenty years of his life.\

I feel full of the joys of spring! This was such a delightful little book. My morbid, inner kid couldn't have been more ecstatic! Should I call someone a twit or a nitwit? I guess, no. That would be very rude of me! My doppelgänger would approve otherwise. And since I'm not like my sinister doppelgänger, I would leave all the sheer nastiness to him along with Mr. and Mrs. Twit, who are also quite repulsive, if you ask me. I'd rather have pleasant thoughts rather than wicked ones.\

Mr. Twit is a very bushy, nailbrushy-faced, grizzly old man who doesn't bother with his appearance.I can't for the life of me understand why he'd rather bury himself in that grubby face of his. And please ladies and gentlemen, I implore you not to peer into that dreadful crevasse of moustachy bristles filled with mouldy and magotty morsels!Mrs. Twit is just like Mr. Twit, but she's no better than him. She's as foul as his malodorous husband with a walking stick and a glass eye!They are one of the most hideous characters who'd exact revenge upon each other, given a chance.\

Oh, what a fun way to bake some spoiled children! Errr... I beg your pardon, but that was my doppelgänger talking. I have to restrain him once more. Now, on to the Twit's garden, we go! This two nasty couple keep Muggle-Wump and his family locked in a protective cage. This poor family are coerced to perform upside-down tricks for the Twit's amusement, including eating, dancing, playing, drinking, and all the jazz! What the Twits don't realize is that Muggle-Wump along with the Roly-Poly Bird is crafting a brilliant plan to get rid of them once and for all...The Twits was truly an imaginative yet horrid tale filled with peculiar characters, unbridled wickedness, misanthropic undertones, playful wit, and clever word play — all done with cheeky humour! It seems that Dahl himself has a certain kind of aversion when it comes to unkempt appearance. Is Dahl implying that Mr. Twit needs some kind of manscaping or he isn't just fond of all that hairy mess? If you analyse further, he seems to be also discriminatory. Just look at Mrs. Twit's glass eye, which in reality you might call lazy eye or amblyopia. A case of lookism? The way he narrates this one too: "But these were English birds and they couldn’t understand the weird African language the monkeys spoke." A case of racism? As whimsical as this story might seem, there are bullying, toxic relationships, bias against idiots (thus the title), and revenge (is a dish best served cold). Well, that's only my hypotheses. Despite all that speculation, if you dig further and deeper, you'll find a hidden gem. And that is... the Golden Rule — a maxim we all know by heart and might be the heart of the story too!

I have no doubt that this book damaged me, psychologically, as a small child. It is one of the earliest books I vividly remember reading aloud to myself, and I remember the first time my mother read it to me before she put me to bed. Here's the gist of the plot: A little boy named Max dresses up in a wolf costume, plays with a hammer, chases his dog with a fork, then threatens to cannibalize his mother. His mother, a master of irony, then puts him to bed with no dinner. Already, this story should start creeping you out. Then a forest starts to grow in Max's bedroom. And no, no chemicals have been ingested anywhere in the story. Though the bit about chasing the dog with the fork does imply a delusional state. Regardless, a fucking forest grows in the kids bedroom. So naturally he gets in a boat and sails off to the other side of the world, to where all these "wild things" are. And promptly subjugates everyone he sees. I'm a damn toddler, and my mom is reading me a book about a sociopath. So Max has a ball with this gang he's conquered and converted, and they howl at the moon and hop through trees. Then he gets hungry and goes home, where his mother, no doubt terrified of his new army of foreign creatures, has left his food for him, still warm. I thought, "This woman aims to do me harm." Yes, please, mother. Read me a story about my bedroom becoming a forest inhabited by monsters, then put me to bed. Think I slept that night? No, I hid out under my bed with a plastic baseball bat, a water gun and flashlight, hoping to God that if this was the night it all went wrong, I had the courage to look those monsters in the eye and pretend I wasn't wetting myself. I made a nest with a giant teddy bear and two pillows and didn't come out until the next morning, when I heard my mom coming down the hall. All day long I pretended nothing was different. But I asked her to read me Where The Wild Things Are again that night. And the next night. For months. I would ask her questions like "Do you think I will have my monsters get you if you don't make me supper?" And she'd smile, and say "Go to bed, Nathan." Spooky shit, I'm telling you.
