It is not so much that The Life of Pi, is particularly moving (although it is). It isn’t even so much that it is written with language that is both delicate and sturdy all at once (which it is, as well). And it’s certainly not that Yann Martel’s vision filled passages are so precise that you begin to feel the salt water on your skin (even though they are). It is that, like Bohjalian and Byatt and all of the great Houdini’s of the literary world, in the last few moments of your journey – after you’ve felt the emotions, endured the moments of heartache, yearned for the resolution of the characters’ struggle – that you realize the book is not what you thought it was. The story transforms, instantly, and forever.And in those last few chapters, you suddenly realize that the moral has changed as well.You feel Martel’s words lingering, suggesting, and you find yourself wondering whether you are his atheist who takes the deathbed leap of faith – hoping for white light and love? Or the agnostic who , in trying to stay true to his reasonable self, explains the mysteries of life and death in only scientific terms, lacking imagination to the end, and, essentially, missing the better story?There is no use in trying to provide a brief synopsis for this ravishing tale of a young boy from India left adrift in the Pacific in a lifeboat with a tiger who used to reside in his father’s zoo in Pondicherry. There is no use because once you finish the book you might decide that this was not, indeed, what the book was about at all. But there are many good authors and many good books. While uncommon, they are not endangered. Read this book because in recent memory - aside from Jose Saramago’s arresting Blindness – there have been no stories which make such grand statements with such few elements. As Pi says in his story “Life on a lifeboat isn’t much of a life. It is like an end game in chess, a game with few pieces. The elements couldn’t be more simple, nor the stakes higher.” It is the same with Martel’s undulating fable of a book about a boy in a boat with a tiger. A simple story with potentially life altering consequences for it’s readers. As Martel writes, "The world isn't just the way it is. It is how we understand it, no? And in understanding something, we bring something to it, no?" Like Schroedinger's cat in the box, the way this book is understood, the way it is perceived affects what it is. There has been some talk that this book will make it’s readers believe in god. I think it’s a question of perspective. To behold this gem of a novel as an adventure of man against the elements (the “dry, yeastless factuality” of what actually happened) is certainly one way to go about it. But to understand this piece to be something indescribable, something godlike, is by far the greater leap of faith.Oh, but worth the leap, if the reader is like that atheist, willing to see the better story.	

Stockholm in the world!  The years between 1945 and 1968 mark the end of Fågelström's century of exploring the growth of Stockholm. I thought I would lose interest at some point, grow tired of following one street after the other filling with cars, modern stores and offices. I thought it would annoy me to see the next generation of protagonists work to reach a slightly higher living standard while sacrificing personal happiness and individuality. Well, I didn't. This is the first time in at least two decades that I have completed a novel series in five volumes, sadly reflecting on the fact that we don't have any writer to continue where Fågelström left Stockholm in the 1960s. Who can combine a family saga with moving, living characters, stretching over four or five generations, with architectural, political, social and economic understanding? Who can see the big picture and the unique person? Who is both analytical and compassionate?The city had grown like a tree, the author muses, adding one ring every year, each telling the story of a new generation and its needs. After the second world war, something changed forever though. Nazism, he calls it. Even if the movement itself and its power centre in Germany had been fought, something of the method stayed in the minds of people. Its poison remained: the hatred, the violence, the exclusive protectionism of the own kind against all others. With the modern communication and transportation systems, Stockholm opened up to foreigners. And to racism. Not excessively poor themselves anymore, Stockholmers learned to hate those who came to Sweden for a better life. Us first! Solidarity in poverty had vanished.Another feature of new Stockholm is the industrialised building business that sees the city as a collection of consumption goods to be thrown away when they are not needed anymore. Whole areas are destroyed to make place for the skyscrapers that symbolise growth and wealth, but also pollution, isolation and functionality. Quantity tops quality in the modern mind.But Stockholm is objectively wealthy, healthy, prosperous compared to other parts of the world. What did Stockholm do well where others failed? The author lets his protagonists speak for a development that scraps mercy and charity in the old Christian sense, and introduces social justice as a new, fair and validating system. If poor and uneducated people have to rely on the "goodness" of charitable, well-off citizens who want to set their record with god straight, they can never fully trust that they will keep their status quo. It can be taken away at a whim. They also learn to flatter and bow to bullies in order to survive, and to adapt to specific moral codes in order to receive what they need to survive. Charity is not free. In a modern democratic system, the state provides the security network that entitles all citizens to basic support, and that makes the difference. Justice, not charity, made Sweden a wealthy and functioning country.Let's not forget that in times of stress!

In a City Transformed is the fourth volume of the acclaimed Stockholm Series by Per Anders Fogelstrom. It opens with the watershed year of 1928, on the eve of the Great Depression. As Sweden heads toward the years of economic crisis and massive unemployment, we the readers reacquaint ourselves with well-loved characters from previous volumes as they age and ponder their existence. The dramatic turns of events of younger characters' lives capture the reader, as they enter adulthood in a volatile period in history. People grow and change as does the ever-transforming city, and meanwhile, the world becomes engulfed in yet another world war. The war unfolds through the words and thoughts of Fogelstrom's Swedish citizens. During these troubled times, Sweden as a nation transforms itself, with the state taking on greater social responsibility, and developing what would henceforth become known as "the Swedish model."

Stockholm 1880-1900, a city is in the making! During the great Stockholm exhibition for art and industry, in 1897, the city is celebrating itself and the achievement of two decades of massive change. Stockholm is expanding in all directions, the building market has boomed and collapsed and is booming again. Factories open and new technology appears. There is an electrical tram, there are street lights, bicycles start to become more and more frequent, factory owners develop into a new wealthy class, settling in the areas around the recently constructed Strandvägen along the "beach" between Östermalm and Djurgården. Alfred Nobel's will has been published, and people are amazed that he considers his money best spent on the development of a more humane world, it "shall constitute a fund, the interest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit to mankind".Hjalmar Branting, the socialist agitator, is not imprisoned for blasphemy on the city island of Långholmen anymore. He is in fact a member of Parliament. Hard to believe. August Strindberg writes his plays and novels. Carl Larsson has his art studio on Södermalm, and is painting al fresco in the National Museum. All getting better, all the time? Spring in the air?I was tempted to think so today, after finisheing the second volume of this family chronicle and taking a walk through Fågelström's expanding city. The sun is shining on the parks and streets where I walked in snow and wind just two weeks ago. People are outside, smiling happily, finally able to wear a spring jacket. They have picnics, stroll through the city and enjoy the wonder of blue skies and flowers. The second volume clearly shows some signs of progress, of spring time for Stockholmers. The poor and dark city is slowly swallowed by larger avenues and prestigious houses, and new factory goods make life easier. But not for everyone. The family I have now followed during forty years of struggles has no part in the development. They read the statistics in the newspaper, and shudder when they hear that a priest's life expectancy has increased to 67 years due to better medical care and nutrition, while a worker still has an average of 32 years of life. They demonstrate for the "utopian" dream of an 8-hour working day, and for minimal wages. They fight for better housing, but nothing really changes. In their misery, they drink. They are abused and they turn violent. Girls are forced to sell their bodies not to starve, and the young children growing up in the damp wooden sheds on Södermalm die of tuberculosis. The dream of a capital city has come true, and Sweden has an emerging industrial elite. But most of the children born into this modern city still suffer. There is still so much left to do!A fantastic description of Stockholm, and an addictive family saga, with an unusual focus on working class life. Recommended!

Oh Stockholm - you are bursting!  At the end of the First World War, Stockholm's streets are bigger, wider, and named after Nordic gods: Odenplan, Sveavägen and so on. These are the streets we still use to move across the ever expanding city. The Stockholm that the third generation of the Nilsson family inhabits in 1918 is not that different from our present town. How much has happened since the first worker in the clan, Henning Nilsson, came walking into Stockholm in 1860 as a teenager, looking for work that would eventually break him down at the age of 35?His granddaughter Maj, despite still being poor and suffering from the injustice of inequality, has moved out of the slums and works in an office, where manicure is a new feature in life - unthinkable for her grandmother Lotten, who drowned while washing clothes on the ice in Hammarby Sjö a generation ago. The lake itself has disappeared, as new technology starts shaping not only the streets of the town, but also the geography surrounding the city. Lake and sea now meet. Dynamite shaped the Stockholm we know today: forcing the rock to give way to human needs and wishes.Socially, Stockholm is on the move as well. The welfare state takes baby steps in the direction of equality and justice. Voting rights change, people can compare their lives to their parents' lives and see a difference. But the Spanish flu, tuberculosis, alcoholism and unemployment still linger as overpowering threats to progress. Rarely these days do I engage in family chronicles, and certainly not in "blockbusters" with five installments. But this story of a Stockholm working class family moving through a century of change keeps me captivated. Now finishing the third volume, encompassing the Great War and the political turbulences caused by the Norwegian independence and the Russian Revolution, I can't wait to follow the Nilsson family into the 1930s and 1940s. The closer I get to present times, the more I can appreciate the accuracy of Fågelström's loving descriptions of the city of his dreams and nightmares.Recommended to those who love Stockholm, who are interested in Swedish history, who like following characters over generations, who just enjoy reading a good piece of literature.I am hooked!

Three separate but parallel stories of the U.S mortgage housing crisis of 2005 are told. Michael Burry, an eccentric ex-physician turned one-eyed Scion Capital hedge fund manager, has traded traditional office attire for shorts, bare feet and a Supercuts haircut. He believes that the US housing market is built on a bubble that will burst within the next few years. Autonomy within the company allows Burry to do largely as he pleases, so Burry proceeds to bet against the housing market with the banks, who are more than happy to accept his proposal for something that has never happened in American history. The banks believe that Burry is a crackpot and therefore are confident in that they will win the deal. Jared Vennett with Deutschebank gets wind of what Burry is doing and, as an investor believes he too can cash in on Burry's beliefs. An errant telephone call to FrontPoint Partners gets this information into the hands of Mark Baum, an idealist who is fed up with the corruption in the financial industry. Baum and his associates, who work at an arms length under Morgan Stanley, decide to join forces with Vennett despite not totally trusting him. In addition to Burry's information, they further believe that most of the mortgages are overrated by the bond agencies, with the banks collating all the sub-prime mortgages under AAA packages. Charlie Geller and Jamie Shipley, who are minor players in a $30 million start-up garage company called Brownfield, get a hold of Vennett's prospectus on the matter. Wanting in on the action but not having the official clout to play, they decide to call an old "friend", retired investment banker Ben Rickert, to help out. All three of these groups work on the premise that the banks are stupid and don't know what's going on, while for them to win, the general economy has to lose, which means the suffering of the general investor who trusts the financial institutions. That latter aspect may not sit well with Baum. Some of these assumptions may be incorrect and may be far more manipulative than they could have ever imagined, which in turn may throw curves into the process.

United Press International journalist Will Bloom and his French freelance photojournalist wife Josephine Bloom, who is pregnant with their first child, leave their Paris base to return to Will's hometown of Ashton, Alabama on the news that his father, Edward Bloom, stricken with cancer, will soon die, he being taken off chemotherapy treatment. Although connected indirectly through Will's mother/Edward's wife, Sandra Bloom, Will has been estranged from his father for three years since his and Josephine's wedding. Will's issue with his father is the fanciful tales Edward has told of his life all his life, not only to Will but the whole world. As a child when Edward was largely absent as a traveling salesman, Will believed those stories, but now realizes that he does not know his father, who, as he continues to tell these stories, he will never get to know unless Edward comes clean with the truth before he dies. On the brink of his own family life beginning, Will does not want to be the kind of father Edward has been to him. One of those stories from Edward's childhood - that he saw his own death in the glass eye of a witch - led to him embracing life since he would not have to fear death knowing when and how it would eventually come. The question is whether Will will be able to reconcile Edward's stories against his real life, either directly from Edward before he dies and/or from other sources, and thus allow Will to come to a new understanding of himself and his life, past, present and future.

She also figures that Crawford chose her, as a woman, to be able to trigger some emotional response from Lecter. After speaking to Lecter for the first time, she realizes that everything with him will be a psychological game, with her often having to read between the very cryptic lines he provides. She has to decide how much she will play along, as his request in return for talking to him is to expose herself emotionally to him. The case takes a more dire turn when a sixth victim is discovered, this one from who they are able to retrieve a key piece of evidence, if Lecter is being forthright as to its meaning. A potential seventh victim is high profile Catherine Martin (Brooke Smith), the daughter of Senator Ruth Martin (Diane Baker), which places greater scrutiny on the case as they search for a hopefully still alive Catherine. Who may factor into what happens is Dr. Frederick Chilton (Anthony Heald), the warden at the prison, an opportunist who sees the higher profile with Catherine, meaning a higher profile for himself if he can insert himself successfully into the proceedings.
