White Fang, Jack London White Fang is a novel by American author Jack London (1876–1916) — and the name of the book's eponymous character, a wild wolfdog. First serialized in Outing magazine, it was published in 1906. The story takes place in Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush and details White Fang's journey to domestication. Shakespeare's intertwined love polygons begin to get complicated from the start--Demetrius and Lysander both want Hermia but she only has eyes for Lysander. Why?Many years from now, historians will look back on this story and wonder why it was so important. And believe me, my friends, important it was. Today, most thrillers and police procedurals gets measured against it.For this review, I will refer to TSOTL as the story, because I'm going to talk about the book, movie, facts, fiction and some of my own opinions.TSOTL was the second Dr. Hannibal Lector story. It was also the second movie adaptation - wait just a damn moment, you might be saying to me, Red Dragon was the first book but it was made after the TSOTL movie was so successful...Correct.However, there was an attempt at a screen adaptation of Red Dragon a few years before TSOTL, called MANHUNTER. It was directed by Michael Mann. To the best of my knowledge, it was a flop at the box office.There are a few things TSOTL had going for it that counted in its favor. By all means, Thomas Harris is a brilliant writer - if you've read any of the books you will know this. But most movie freaks and geeks will agree with me that the story is probably one of the best adaptations from book to screen ever.Then you look at the cast - Jody Foster managed to play a vulnerable yet strong female (IMPORTANT) lead. You know she is intelligent, yet she knows that she has no chance against the superior intellect of Dr. Hannibal Lector. In comes Anthony Hopkins, whose portrayal of the psychopathic genius is so convincing, it catapults him to one of the biggest super villains of all time, yet he is so charming that the audience can't help but like him.And, of course, Buffalo Bill is played by Ted Levine, who is utterly convincing, even if you've seen him as the cop in MONK.With a strong cast and story, this movie became an unlikely contender at the Academy Awards. And they won a few!Right, lets take a step back, to the research phase of this story.Thomas Harris, in the early 80's, were doing research and was fortunate enough to get involved with criminal profiling, which at that time had been an unproven and highly speculative science. It was during the time when they were on the trail of one Ted Bundy. If you know a bit about this famous serial killer, you will probably know that he used to fake injuries by wearing a cast and asking victims for their help -  Do you remember how Buffalo Bill got that girl in the back of the van? And while Bundy was incarcerated on death row, he was willing to help the police do a profile on another serial killer of the time, The Green River Killer. I believe Bundy told them not to remove a body when they discover it, because the killer will go back to his treasure - something that was later confirmed to have happened.  Remember that agent Sterling asked Dr. Lector for his help? And then there was the killer Ed Gein, many decades before, who robbed graves and ultimately killed people to make himself a female skin, which was apparently hard to sow without tearing.  Need I explain this one? The fact of the matter is, while some things may have seemed preposterous to us in the early eighties, like they could only happen in the movies, there were some truly messed up people out there who were doing some truly messed up things - wow, it's been a while since I've kept a sentence PG like that...I will accept your applause humbly.Also, there was and, unfortunately, still are some stereo types about women in the FBI. Harris took the opportunity to make a statement, maybe very subtly, but still very important, about power vs. emotion. At no time does this story feel like a Hollywood blockbuster, where the star is cocky and always has a way out of a sticky situation, where it's all guns and fire and explosions, etc. No, this story was meant to cut close to home, to show the possibilities, for we are all vulnerable in this world. Agent Clarice is scared, she fears for her life, she doesn't know if she will survive, but she fights the big, bad (Goliath) killer. And she wins.This story is also important from a psychological point of view. Whatever your feelings about profiling may be, they have discovered so much and found impossible connections through their research, and we will never know how many lives it has saved. It's a kind of Paying-it-forward thing: By doing what they do, they prevent things that may have been inevitable in a different world.I once saw something (I can't remember exactly where) about some research they were doing on inmates. They took brain scans of a number of them, and noted that those who were certified as psychopathic, had an underdeveloped area in a certain part of their brains. If I can remember correctly, it had something to do with the mother producing too much serotonin during pregnancy, or some such scientific thing.How is this helpful, you may ask?Well, this is my personal opinion, so if it offends you, stop reading:Casey Anthony...Is she a psychopath who got away with murder?Yes, when I look at the facts of the case, and the things her attorney's did to get her free, I'm sickened to think the jurors couldn't believe a mother would do that to her child. Nobody LIKES to believe it, but I wish I could have seen a brain scan of her compared to those other psychopaths. I wish there was a psychologist who could have explained it to them.But enough about that.This book is, was and always will be important, because it brought certain realities home to the world we find ourselves in.If you haven't read it - but managed to get through this long review - what's the matter with you?But I am not trying to convince anybody of my point of view, so feel free to disagree.

I really, really enjoyed this collection of essays and musings by Anton Szandor LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan and what is called "modern Satanism." First point: Let me say that while I am a Satanist, it is no longer of the LaVeyan variety, as it was during my teenage years. The experiences I've had in my life have brought me 'round full circle, to the point where I now identify as a spiritual Satanist (but, to avoid confusion and jargon, let's just stick with one word: Satanist). Which brings me to my second point: I would have given this five stars if I had agreed with everything LaVey says here, but I don't. For instance, his belief that "people who spell magic with a 'k' . . . aren't." While clever, it simply isn't true. Rather, those who spell it with a 'k' don't use it solely for the purpose of psychodrama like the LaVeyans. I also don't agree with the bits where LaVey states how he is against abortion - but then, you have to remember, this was written by a man born in 1930. And I don't agree with his quasi-fascistic attempts to try and validate eugenics.Apart from that, I think the rest of the book is excellent. This is my second time reading it - third if you count the time when I merely skimmed through it, selecting a few choice parts to read. Some of the essays here are brilliant, others funny, and others inspiring. I can't tell you how many times I finished reading one of these, paused and put the book down, and said to myself, "That's so true," or "I feel this way, too." Whatever opinion I hold of the current Church of Satan (it isn't a positive one), I've always respected LaVey as a philosopher ahead of his time, a real devil's advocate, and a clever businessman.One of my favorite parts was when LaVey wrote on how society now rewards incompetence instead of hard work; nepotism instead of reliability and intellect; and how stupid or otherwise inconsequential people exploit that system to their benefit. LaVey says here: "A fine display of competence can be affected while still maintaining one's ineptitude. Marvels of technology have provided awesome means by which a dolt may appear gifted." Was LaVey looking into a crystal ball as he wrote this?But my absolute favorite part was one that rings true so loudly in this day and age: his chapter on the popularization of false victimhood. Just like self-immolating monks who kill themselves rather than change anything, rioters who destroy their own neighborhoods, or Christian martyrs, LaVey explains how the cult of the victim persists - and grows - today. "There will always be professional victims," he says. "The entire concept of Christianity is a victim cult. To be Christ-like is to be victimized and concurrently righteous."In many ways that chapter is a foretelling of what we see today, where the people with the loudest voices are those without any special talent or noteworthiness, who, in an ironic reversal, bully those who refuse to acknowledge their status as perpetually-oppressed victim. You know what I'm talking about. Spoiled people with iPads and cars and college degrees, talking about "triggering" and "safe spaces" and other horseshit. LaVey saw the shit coming before it hit the fan, but now that it has, I'd suggest reading this essay for some advice on how to avoid swallowing it.As LaVey concluded, " . . . and the malcontent and the ugly were to become the official victims from which the scam of oppression would emerge and flourish." And so it has. It started with Christianity, but it didn't end there. Everyone's got a cross to bear, and each one is lit up like a neon sign, bearing the words, "PAY ATTENTION TO ME! I WANT TO FEEL IMPORTANT!"This is a huge part of why I enjoyed this book. It comes across not only as an assortment of thoughts and philosophic musings from a Satanic thinker, but also as a veritable how-to for the modern age. How to be a devilish charmer, how to rise above mediocrity and insignificance, how to spot the "God of the assholes" when he rears his ugly white-bearded head. Satan Speaks! is something that is just as eye- and mind-opening as other works, like The Satanic Bible, and even moreso than works like The Satanic Scriptures. Great stuff.

"Wiseguy" is Nicholas Pileggi's remarkable bestseller, the most intimate account ever printed of life inside the deadly high-stakes world of what some people call the Mafia. "Wiseguy" is Henry Hill's story, in fascinating, brutal detail, the never-before-revealed day-to-day life of a working mobster - his violence, his wild spending sprees, his wife, his mistresses, his code of honor.

This is my favorite Anton LaVey book. I stumbled across it during a really low point in my life. It brought me out of a deep depression, and made me feel like I wanted to live again. That said, it's not, by any means a book for everyone. For me it was the first step on a path to deeper spiritual understanding, and self acceptance. I think many people would just find it offensive, and think the author just wrote it to be shocking. In the end, you can say whatever you want about Anton, but he was one Hell of a guy.

I thought this book was kinda cheesy and lame. The book plays big on the whole psychodrama (explained in The Satanic Bible). This explains the layout of performing ritual, what to wear, the required individuals, etc. The various rituals are explained and include English, some French, some German, and some transliterated Russian. I was surprised when I came to The Call of Cthulu ritual. I thought The Satanic Bible was OK but this seemed campy and bad. I'll never read this again or look through it as reference.

I read this shortly after finishing The Satanic Bible because I was a teenage prat and still wanted to shock the people sat opposite me on public transport. For these purposes this book doesn't work as well as The Satanic Bible. Though it still has the inverted pentacle on the cover, the friendly pink colour lowers the impact.As for contents: Ha! Holy shit it's terrible. The 'magic' referred to is all about seduction - this whole book is basically an egotistical straight man's ideas for what women should do to pick up guys. It's The Game but written for women in the less-slick 1960's. Its advice goes from the neanderthal: 'don't wash - pheromones are your body's natural magic' to atrocious deception based on cod-psychology. Apparently all men and women have a 'demon' self which is the opposite of their outer self, and it's the 'demon' self you have to pitch yourself to. So if he's macho on the outside he's whimpering on the inside, and so as to not scare off the whimpering 'demon self' you've decided he has, you should make yourself as soft and gentle as possible, even perhaps giving yourself a softer, gentler-sounding name. If he seems really straight-laced perhaps affect an exotic accent to appeal to the opposite him.Genius. What could go wrong?The whole book is basically advice for a woman on how to get a one night stand. If she wants anything more she's a bit screwed once all the deception comes out, surely? As well as recommending lying wherever possible to get laid, LaVey is also apparently a big fan of gender binaries. He advises women should be as curvy and distinctively feminised as possible - don't go for any of this unsexy jeans rubbish - and men should be butch. In this way each gender plays up their own 'natural magic' as much as possible.So: be smelly, lie a lot, put on pantomime shows of gendered behaviours. You know, even reading this as an inept and slightly confused virgin - I still knew this was a load of bull.

Count Alucard finds his way from Budapest to the swamps of the Deep South after meeting Katherine Caldwell, of the moneyed Caldwell clan that runs a plantation called Dark Oaks. She's obsessed with occult matters. Who better to guide her through this supernatural world than Count Alucard, whose name no one bothers to spell backwards? No one, that is, except the wily Dr. Brewster, an old family friend. He'll join Professor Lazlo, a specialist in the occult, in fighting this "Alucard" and the woman he's influenced. Or has Katherine influenced him? Meanwhile, Katherine's fiancé, Frank Stanley, will find his courage and his sanity sorely tested when he accidentally shoots Katherine to death, yet finds that she goes on living.

When a ship is wrecked off Whitby, the only survivor, Count Dracula, is discovered lying on the beach by the sickly young Mina Van Helsing, who is visiting her dear friend Lucy Seward. Lucy, her fiancé Jonathan Harker (a solicitor), and her father Dr. Jack Seward (who manages the local asylum) attempt to make the Count feel welcome to England. The Count quickly takes the life of Mina, and proceeds to romance Lucy, with the intention of making her his greatest bride. Soon after the death of Mina, the Sewards call her father Dr. Abraham Van Helsing to come to their home. As Lucy falls deeper under the spell of the Count, Dr. Van Helsing almost immediately comes to understand that his daughter fell prey to a vampire and discovers the culprit to be none other than the Count himself. Dr. Van Helsing, Dr. Seward, and Harker work together to foil the Count's plans to take Lucy away to his native Transylvania.

Ben and Marian Rolf rent a grand old country mansion as a summer getaway for themselves, their twelve year old son Davey, and Ben's Aunt Elizabeth. They feel they can't turn down the rent deal offered to them by the house's owners, siblings Roz and Arnold Allardyce, despite some reservations. First amongst those reservations, they are to take care of the house on their own, which Ben feels is too big a job, especially for Marian and the interior housekeeping. In Marian's words, the large size of the house is a "waste". And second and perhaps more important amongst those reservations, the Allardyces' aged mother will be staying in her room at the house, the Rolfs who are to provide a tray of food left outside her room three times a day, which Marian vows to take care of on her own, with no other members of the family to go into that isolated wing of the house so as not to disturb Mrs. Allardyce's peace. Upon their arrival at the house for the first day of their stay, they find a note from Roz and Arnold stating that they had to leave on an emergency, only with the necessary keys enclosed with no address or telephone number where they can be reached. As the summer progresses, the family members individually begin to exhibit unusual and unexplainable behavior, and unusual and unexplainable things start happening around the house. The strongest behavior ends up being Marian's total focus on renewing the house into what she says she wants it to be, or so she implies she is doing. These occurrences threaten both the loving family dynamic as well as the individual lives of the four. The answers to what is happening may be who or what lies behind the closed and often locked door of Mrs. Allardyce's bedroom.

The Manhattan General Hospital has admitted a string of young women who have been raped by something otherworldly. The perpetrator only attacks women who are virgins. Dr. Pace and Detective Andriotti work together to try and isolate the strange organic material found on the victims, and to try and locate the fiend. Soon the victims begin arising in a trance and leaving the hospital by an underground passage where their fate awaits them.

On planet Xarbia, an experimental life form, Subject 20, has been created by an elite group of researchers in hopes of preventing a galactic food crisis. However, when Subject 20 becomes deadly, the best troubleshooter in the Galaxy is called in to investigate.

A ship pulls into New York Harbor with no one on board. The police find a cargo full of green pulsating eggs. Upon contact, the eggs explode spreading a green acid like substance that seeps into the skin and explodes. It is later discovered that the eggs are being manufactured in South America by a one-eyed Martian that grew from a tiny seed a former astronaut brought back from a expedition to Mars.

"You've never seen anything til you've seen the Sun through the rings of Saturn," exclaims Alex Rebar. Apparently, somehow this causes him to start melting and eating people, such as a nurse in the tightest fitting nurse's outfit ever, a nerdy fisherman, a horny old couple who simply can't keep their hands off each other in a car. To save the day comes Doctor Ted Nelson!

Two campers in the New Jersey woods have their outdoor fun interrupted by the arrival of a meteorite crashing nearby. They go to investigate the crater, but are suddenly attacked and devoured by alien parasites who have hitched a ride to Earth. After finishing off the campers, the hungry space monsters head for a nearby town, where they make their domain in the basement of an old house soon begin polishing off one hapless inhabitant after another. Four young teenagers, plus one pre-teen boy, try to find a way to stop the angry space monsters before they reproduce and literally eat humanity.

Scientific experiments backfire and produce horrific mutations: half man, half fish, which terrorize a small fishing village by killing the men and raping the women.

There also seems to be a bizarre connection between Eddie Quist and this supposedly safe haven. And when, after nights of being tormented by unearthly cries, Karen ventures into the forest and makes a terrifying discovery.

Though most of the reports proved to be factual, some were heralded as sensationalist; others led to allegations of libel while at least one story later proved to be an embarrassing hoax.
