 I own both volumes of the original collections of this story. Vol. 1 includes Batman 635 to 641 and there is a new edition of this title that collects both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (Batman 645 to 650 and Batman Annual #1) in one book. I will be reviewing both of these volumes separately. Just cuz. Be warned, some spoilery stuff in this one folks. Judd Winick proved with Under the Hood Vol. 1 that he can not only can write a great story, but one of the greatest Batman stories ever told. I couldn’t help but think of Brubaker’s epic run on Captain America and the birth of the Winter Soldier (equally epic) when re-reading this one for Red week. Judd introduces us to the new and improved Red Hood in this kick-ass Bat-tale. So who is it that’s under the hood? Jason Todd? Clayface? The Joker? Alfred? Barbara Gordon? Tom Selleck? Winick does a great job of making you wonder right up to the big reveal. And yep, it’s Tom Selleck….I mean, Jason Todd. Killed off in a vote by fans (I voted to kill him) years ago, Jason was one of those characters that everyone once thought of as dead-dead. Like permanently. Like Bucky and Uncle Ben, never to return. Well he’s back, and I actually like him this time around. This whole book pretty much revolves around Batman’s investigation into who’s wearing the red hood, an all-out war with the crime lord Black Mask, and the big reveal. A few of the high points for me in this one were Batman and Nightwing’s toe to toe with an Amazo android, Bats paying visits to other Justice League alumni that have returned from the dead, Jason’s reunion with Mr. J, and the final showdown between Batman and the Red Hood. Winick did such a good job building suspense, voicing other long-established heroes, making me like Black Mask, and finally in telling an awesome Bat-story. The only parts I didn’t really care for were the portions involving Onyx, a character I never really liked, and a couple of other minor elements that I think DC editors made Winick shoe-horn into this story for continuity purposes with other Bat-titles at the time this was first published. Doug Mahnke’s art is fantastic and consistent. The only weak spot was issue 640. Paul Lee was the fill-in artist on this one and just doesn’t do it for me. Sorry Paul. Matt Wagner provides all of the cover art for this collection and man does he kick ass. Love his stuff. This one’s a favorite of mine and it’s one you should definitely check out if you’re a Bat-fan.Get this review and more at:\

Well, this was actually a lot of fun. Because on the surface, this is a terrible idea. Or maybe just a painfully retro one. Teenage sidekicks have been out of vogue for decades, especially ones that closely echo the theme of the hero they sidekick for. And it might work for the Legion of Superheroes, but the idea of naming a character created in the 21st century Iron Lad is... Well, it's hardly current. And as a team name, Young Avengers is no better. I have a sneaking suspicion that some of these decisions were made by editorial and handed down to the Heinberg as Things He Must Do, which is kind of a shame. I remember when Young Avengers first hit the stands that I cringed at the name and passed the book by. That was not my wisest decision.The thing is, as hokey as the name and the general concept are, this is not a hokey book. Not even slightly. The characters are engaging, in a very real, not-even-slightly-cheesy way. The dialog may not always be sparkling, but it's real and fits the characters. And the story holds together. It's easy to rely on the teen fiction standard of adults who just don't understand, but here it makes sense. I absolutely believe, without a moment's doubt, that Captain America would not want a teenage kid to dress up like Bucky and fight crime, especially when that kid turns out to be the grandson of the real first super soldier. (Is this what firmly established Truth: Red, White, and Black as part of Marvel's continuity?) If I'd read Avengers Disassembled, Iron Man's motives might have been even more clear, but what I did know was sufficient for me to buy his position. I did find myself rolling my eyes at the boys' club mentality some of the characters, particularly Patriot, displayed when (gasp!) girls wanted to join the team, but I do think that was intentional. They're never shown as being in any way reasonable in wanting to keep Kate and Cassie out, and I think Heinberg wanted the reader's reaction to their acceptance to be, "It's about time!" I had fun with this book, and I liked the characters. So here I go again, trying to catch up on a title long after I should have started to read it. I like Teen Titans, and it should have occurred to me that I would like Young Avengers, too. Especially because the latter also has a blonde girl named Cassie who wears a red costume, in one of the closest total coincidences I can remember seeing in comics.

Batman vs. The Incredible Hulk is a stupendous Len Wein 1982 offering that should delight comic fans and art critics alike. With its learned references, classic artwork, and deft dialogue this is truly a hidden gem that has retained its radiance some 30 (almost 40!) years later. I could never have imagined such an atypical dyad ensconced within two covers would be such an enjoyable read. Intentionally or not, there's some definite Freudian stuff going on here. With Batman representing Ego (The rational), the Hulk - Id (The irrational), and Bruce Banner - Super-Ego (The third eye's middle-man), I'm sure that coke fueled Viennese would have had a field day with this. And I'm definitely sure that this adds an intriguing psychological dimension not usually seen in comics. All the more interesting is that Banner himself is a feeble Super-Ego at best, perhaps depicting the author's opinion on us hairless apes and our feeble attempts to control our reptilian hind-brains. Dismal or not, the addition of the Joker as well asks a lot of questions about this trifurcated model of human nature. As great as the psychological questions this comic asks on a not-so-explicit level, so too are equally great and explicit interpolations of great art. I would never have expected to have seen such stellar reduplications of Dali (The ever famous, Persistence of Memory) and Picasso (Guernica) in such an otherwise plebeian work of art as a comic. The learned references are great, the classic depictions of the characters are great, and some words have to be definitely (d/r)eserved for the great paneling. In true comic book fashion, the omnipresent quadrilateral ensconces most of the action however, Len Wein made some great choices depicting numerous scenes within totally open fields unimpeded by the box, as it were. These freedoms of movement added a lot of fluidity to the story and really added another solid dosage of drama in certain scenes. Overall I was very impressed with this cross-over. The sands of time have done little to detract from its veneer and given the more often than not deplorable state of comics lately, has almost served as a buffing. As above, the facade remains well - preserved at worst, and as below the currents that support it are intriguing. Intentional or not, the psychological underlays are obvious, and add a very thoughtful dimension to an otherwise ostensibly puerile art-form. Two well preserved thumbs up

I had watched that mediocre movie, but until I watched that TV masterpiece made on Netflix, it was when I really got to know about Daredevil and his inner world inside of the Marvel Universe.People say that Marvel lacks of Batman to be complete. Well, that people are wrong. Marvel doesn’t need Batman, Marvel has Daredevil and that’s plenty enough.Matt Murdock suffered an accident, when he was a kid, with a truck with chemicals, saving the life of a walking blind man. He got blind himself, but those chemicals did something on his body and now all his other senses are enhanced to superhuman levels. He studied laws and now he protects Hell’s Kitchen during the day as a lawyer and on night as the vigilante known as “Daredevil”.\

The story is solid, but there were some things that I found kinda odd.First, Matt when he was a kid, some schoolmates put him a nickname... “Daredevil”.... and he hated it.Okay, first, being called “Daredevil” is not that bad, in fact I can’t find it bad at all, so I don’t understand why he was so pissed about it. He must be grateful to have such lame bullies on his school that the best “insult” that they’d think of was calling him “Daredevil”. Also, he returns to Hell’s Kitchen as adult, so I think that it’s must be quite likely that some of those bullies are still around (now as adults too) in the neighborhood. So, taking as your “battle name” the same nickname that you had as a kid is kinda dumb since some of those men can guess who is under the mask. In other topic, the Kingpin is briefly introduced killing his predecessor in the mob, and the scene indicates that he was some kind of assistant until that moment, but later is mentioned that he “trained” an assassin, but that’s kinda odd, being able to be “training” his own enforcers if he was still a shadowy assistant not long ago yet.I know that Elektra is really important in Matt’s life but her presence in the story lacks to justify the invested pages on her. If you aren’t previously aware of her importance, you could easily wondering what was the deal of having her in the book.And certainly, taking in account that that’s an origin’s story, it was a disappointment that Matt’s mother was presented so briefly and without exposing any details about her. I am sure that her own story must be quite good.Besides all that, definitely this is a great story, well written, with good artwork and a must-be reading to any Daredevil fan and/or anybody interested to know in detail about the comic book character.

Spyder! Spyder! Burning bright, in the forests of the night, what immortal hand or eye, could frame thy fearful… symmetry?I knew about the existence of this particular storyline since many years ago, even I read in some guide book about Spider-Man where it was featured in the Top10 of the best stories about the character, but honestly I got really impressed (and my curiosity exploded) when I read a promotional magazine about the 75 years of Marvel (obviously counting since its days as Timely Comics) where in a poll list where fans voted for the Marvel’s 75 favorites storylines and/or single issues and Kraven’s Last Hunt got the #3 spot!!!It was a list featuring material from all Marvel universe and Kraven’s Last Hunt was surpassed only by Civil War and The Death of Gwen Stacy.So, until then, I was aware about its importance of this story, inside of the titles of Spider-Man but I was amazed (pun intended but with respect) when this tale got a so high position in that poll involving the entire Marvel universe.I wanted to read that story!Of course, any voted list or any published list will be polemic and questioned until Ragnarok, but still, it was clear that Kraven´s Last Hunt was something worthy to read and curiously enough I found a TPB on the local comic book store so I decided that it was time to meet this story.\
  STOP!... AND READ THE INTRODUCTION!\
Stories have lives of their own(quoted from the TPB’s Introduction written by J.M. DeMatteis, the author of the story)I don’t know if you use to read the introduction on the TPB’s editions. I do it and not always they are something any of value, but if you ever decide to read this story and you get this same edition, please, read the introduction.You will realize that it’s worthy of your time.Besides informing the many times that DeMatteis tried that editors (from Marvel and even DC) would pick the premise of his story to be used on several characters like Wonder Man and Batman, finally to land with your friendly neighborhood web-crawler, also the introduction is a beautiful tribute to the life that any good story has, a life so vivid that in many times the writers hardly have any control over them but only barely able to put them in paper just like they wanted to exist.\
  THE SPIDER, THE HUNTER AND THE VERMIN\
My triumph frightens you, doesn’t it?Since I read the run of The Saga of Swamp Thing by Alan Moore, I have kept saying: “There aren’t bad characters, only bad writers.” Nowadays anybody can say how cool is Swamp Thing, but back then, like more than 30 years ago, nobody was giving a damn about Swamp Thing. Sure, even Len Wein did a fair job (Hey! This guy created Wolverine!) but it was clear that Swamp Thing wasn’t anything that readers were running to buy at the newsstands, but when Alan Moore got control of the title... and BAM!... Swamp Thing became the founding stone of what would be Vertigo Comics later.J.M. DeMatteis planned to use a whole new villain for this story, which wasn’t so odd if you think in similar storylines where a new villain is able to beat a relevant superhero like Doomsday and Bane were able to do against Superman and Batman.It’s clear why is easier to use a whole new villain to avoid the raging fans questioning why the heck certain known villain was able to beat the hero if that villain isn’t as cool or powerful than their favorite ones.You never will please the masses.So, I celebrate the “balls” of J.M. DeMatteis of choosing of a kinda minor villain like Kraven, the Hunter as the focus of this powerful story.Sure, Kraven, the Hunter is known member of the rogues’ gallery of Spidey, but I am sure that anybody doing their own Top10 of favorite villains or merely mentioning the most powerful criminals of Spider-Man’s titles, when you have heavy weights like Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Venom, Mysterio, Lizard, Scorpion, etc… before the publication of this story, it would be likely that many fans would omit to Kraven.Not anymore.And if you think that in the mix, DeMatteis include Vermin to the formula, you could be sure that something unique will be done. Anybody can write something entertained even great if you use Venom......but Kraven and Vermin? You need to be a writer, a good writer to build something like this here.Even I think that the story is a statement why the super-heroes are always able to win (and survive) in the comic book reality, since over there, the super-villains didn’t work or react like the real life criminals.The super-villains tend to overwork their plans along with their tactics to trap or to kill the heroes.When a simple bullet can do the job.And if you think, “well sure, Spider-Man isn’t bulletproof but there are other super-heroes invulnerable to bullets”.Another mistake.Not always you have to point the bullet to the primary target to do the wished damage. Nobody is an island. Always there is someone close.A simple bullet can do the job. And that’s the most frightening thing of real life.Force-fielded jails mounted on rockets into the sun, giant hourglasses full of quicksand, moving cutting blades over platforms above of erupting volcanoes, etc... Nothing of the sort is so effective, so deadly and so frightening like a simple bullet.A bullet, a coffin and a corpse. A simple formula to put fear into the heart of even the bravest hero.And when it’s done by a villain like Kraven, an experienced trained hunter, but still a man without any metahuman powers, the whole concept got even more frightening.That’s the beauty of Kraven’s Last Hunt.That’s the power of this story.

2020I'm re-reading the books because we just watched the Netflix show and it made me think about how much I loved this story. This is still one of my all-time favorite graphic novels and if you haven't read it yet, I honestly can't recommend it enough. 2018I was gifted the beautiful hardback set of these a while back and just finished re-reading the first book...again. Can't believe how much I'd forgotten! The gist is that the violent murder of their father by two teens sends the three children and their mother to their dad's ancestral home. Keyhouse. Layer by layer the story of why their father was killed, what happened to them during the time the killers were in their house, and how the family is coping, starts coming together to paint a heart-wrenching tale. Then add a layer of mystery to the house itself, with its strange and magical keys that keep popping up, and you've got something amazing to read. The dialogue was amazing, and the characters felt quite real, especially for a graphic novel.What seems to be a story about a family dealing with a terrible tragedy, slowly unfolds into something more. Brrrrr.The artwork perfectly complements the creeptastic storyline in this. What else can I say?
