Readers and audiences have long greeted As You Like It with delight. Its characters are brilliant conversationalists, including the princesses Rosalind and Celia and their Fool, Touchstone. Orlando, whose older brother Oliver plotted his death, has fled there, too.Recent scholars have also grounded the play in the issues of its time. These include primogeniture, passing property from a father to his oldest son. As You Like It depicts intense conflict between brothers, exposing the human suffering that primogeniture entails. Another perspective concerns cross-dressing. Most of Orlando’s courtship of Rosalind takes place while Rosalind is disguised as a man, “Ganymede.” At her urging, Orlando pretends that Ganymede is his beloved Rosalind. But as the epilogue reveals, the sixteenth-century actor playing Rosalind was male, following the practice of the time. In other words, a boy played a girl playing a boy pretending to be a girl.

I'm a 17 year old classics student and not ashamed to say that I bought this at groovy Greeks live (where I also met Terry Deary). As a child I remember starting this book and not really liking it because of all the complicated Greek names, I couldn't really understand a lot of it but this time around I enjoyed looking at the ancient Greeks from a child's perspective and seeing how actually ridiculous they often were. Wasn't really a fan of all the quizzes and games but it's a kids book, I'm not really the target audience. Would recommend for older children (11-13) as some of the language is a little complicated, but I'm no expert.

Watts offers a new history of the fall of the Roman Republic that explains why Rome exchanged freedom for autocracy. For centuries, even as Rome grew into the Mediterranean's premier military and political power, its governing institutions, parliamentary rules, and political customs successfully fostered negotiation and compromise. By the 130s BC, however, Rome's leaders increasingly used these same tools to cynically pursue individual gain and obstruct their opponents. As the center decayed and dysfunction grew, arguments between politicians gave way to political violence in the streets. The stage was set for destructive civil wars--and ultimately the imperial reign of Augustus. The death of Rome's Republic was not inevitable. In Mortal Republic, Watts shows it died because it was allowed to, from thousands of small wounds inflicted by Romans who assumed that it would last forever. 

What I didn't know was that St. John is a "genre" writer, and specifically a romance novelist. I'm not sure I would have bought this book if I had known. Some of her advice is exactly the kind of advice that I think too many mediocre YA authors have taken to heart: readers have no attention spans, so you have to keep them engaged with fast-paced scenes; readers don't like to work at understanding so make everything clear an obvious; readers want to feel what the main character feels so use all kinds of strong descriptors like "heart pounded" "stomach clenched" "breath caught" etc etc etc. (this last thing is a personal pet peeve)At one point St. John says that no one want to read too much too-clever witty banter because it is not believable that people could be that clever.And a few times St. John suggests that to effortlessly endear your reader you should make your characters come with sympathetic "givens" like that they are an orphan, or abused, or poor, or missing a parent. Well, that explains a lot of YA, too. But, look: St. John has written and published over 40 books; I've done neither. So I appreciated reading reminders about how important character motivation and conflict is, as well as her concrete suggestions about how to prepare to write.

3½ starsTwo mysteries were solved by my finally finishing  The Iliad. 1) It is so obvious why these Ancient Greek stories have survived for so many years-- it's all gory violence and sex. Homer tapped into these marketing tools early. 2) I now understand why puritanical attitudes toward female sexuality developed. Pretty much everything bad that happens is caused by Helen of Troy - "slut that I am" - running off with Paris, and Hera seducing Zeus. The ancients must have read this and been like "please, girls, just... don't".Also: It seems I may have been too harsh with  Sarah J. Maas and her mist-rising, earth-shaking sex scenes. Clearly she was channeling Homer:\
  “The son of Cronus spoke and took his wife in his arms; and the divine earth sent up spring flowers beneath them, dewy clover and crocuses and a soft and crowded bed of hyacinths, to lift them off the ground. In this they lay, covered by a beautiful golden cloud, from which a rain of glistening dewdrops fell.”\
It's taken me so long to read this because, every time I tried to start, I kept comparing it to  The Odyssey, which I like much more. Odysseus's journey and encounters with creatures such as cannibal giants are very entertaining. And, when it comes down to it, I can only enjoy so many war scenes. Seeing as  The Iliad is all about the Trojan War, there are a lot of war scenes.BUT it is saved by the Greek gods. What a ridiculous bickering soap opera the Greek pantheon is. I genuinely burst out laughing multiple times. I like the Greek gods because they are so flawed and jealous and vindictive and, um, human. Hera, especially, is a piece of work. I love her. Sometimes you have to wonder what was going through the heads of Ancient Greeks when this is how they imagined their gods. From Hera calling Artemis a "shameless bitch" like something out of Mean Girls, to all the gods supporting their favourite team (Greek or Trojan) in the war like it's a damn football match. The Iliad gets better in the last eight books. It is more of a struggle in the beginning (mainly books 4-13) because there are some pages that blend together in a stream of similar-sounding Greek and Trojan men stabbing each other with spears. Often in the nipple or buttocks, too, which seems… peculiar.I'll stop being silly, though. It is a remarkable - if admittedly sexist - work. It's strange to think how themes and values that were important 3,000 years ago are still important today. I don't know if Homerian spoilers are a thing, but I'll just say that the one death, the death of the story can still be felt so very deeply all these years after its writing. The only thing more tragic than losing the one you love most is knowing you could have prevented it.I was disappointed my library didn’t have the Caroline Alexander translation, which is the first English translation by a woman, but Rieu’s Translation was fantastic. The sea underworld is shaken up when the son of shark mob boss Don Lino (Robert De Niro) is found dead, and a young fish named Oscar (Will Smith) is found at the scene. Even though Madame Blueberry lives in a nice treehouse, and has lots of friends, she is still upset because she always thinks she needs more "stuff". When a new Stuff-Mart superstore opens up near her home, she loads up with everything she can, but is still sad. Eventually, Madame Blueberry learns that it's important to be thankful for what you already have.

When Larry goes out of town during production to help some needy kids, he runs into trouble. Frustrated, he calls Bob to say that he's giving up and coming home. Bob and "Lutfi" (a small cucumber sock puppet performed by Khalil the caterpillar) show a series of skits to help Larry learn the value of perseverence.

When Archibald Asparagus takes over VeggieTales, he does this episode in a classy way. The "Silly Song with Larry" involves takes place in the thirties, with Larry trying to protect his top hat from being squashed, and singing in Sinatra-like tunes. The episode's entire story is supposedly a lost Gilbert and Sullivan musical, which Archibald learns at the end was just a prank script. It involves a friendly young viking who continually leaves the ship with some money and returns with an empty bag. When two other vikings are sent to find out what's going on, they learn he is returning what they stole to the monks. But should they tell their superior, if it'll get Lyle executed?
