20 or so years ago, Will Self curated a feature in  The Observer  which listed 20-30 notable cult novels. Among these, established classics such as  A Clockwork Orange ,  Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas  and  Trainspotting  rubbed shoulders with less famous offerings and Victor Headley's book counted among these.The copy I finally managed to obtain was a second hand one, the book having been out of print for a number of years, and was stamped as 'withdrawn' from the library of a South London school - not surprisingly given that it's a tale with enough freebase Ecuadorian marching powder, casual sexual disloyalty and gangster violence to make even the hardiest of us quail.But to consign this to 'cult' status would be quite wrong because there is something really impressive here - the use of Jamaican patois, regular nods to that island country's musical heritage, portrait of Hackney before the Nathan Barleys arrived and insistent narrative provide a punchy, 185 novel with a not an ounce of fat on it. More books in the  Yardie  series were to follow and this one leaves much unresolved but in 'D.', there is an immoral hero to foreshadow other villains of gangster fiction and celluloid. A TV series based on the book and its sequels would be something to savour.It's also a great snapshot of the early 1990s and testament to Dotun Adebayo's foundation of the X Press, devoted to highlighting Black culture.

A guksu western. Three Korean gunslingers are in Manchuria circa World War II: Do-wan, an upright bounty hunter, Chang-yi, a thin-skinned and ruthless killer, and Tae-goo, a train robber with nine lives. Tae-goo finds a map he's convinced leads to buried treasure; Chang-yi wants it as well for less clear reasons. Do-wan tracks the map knowing it will bring him to Chang-yi, Tae-goo, and reward money. Occupying Japanese forces and their Manchurian collaborators also want the map, as does the Ghost Market Gang who hangs out at a thieves' bazaar. These enemies cross paths frequently and dead bodies pile up. Will anyone find the map's destination and survive to tell the tale?

2008 South Korean film directed by Kim Ji-woon

Ricardo Tubbs is urbane and dead smart. He lives with Bronx-born Intel analyst Trudy, as they work undercover transporting drug loads into South Florida to identify a group responsible for three murders. Sonny Crockett [to the untrained eye, his presentation may seem unorthodox, but procedurally, he is sound] is charismatic and flirtatious until - while undercover working with the supplier of the South Florida group - he gets romantically entangled with Isabella, the Chinese-Cuban wife of an arms and drugs trafficker. The best undercover identity is oneself with the volume turned up and restraint unplugged. The intensity of the case pushes Crockett and Tubbs out onto the edge where identity and fabrication become blurred, where cop and player become one - especially for Crockett in his romance with Isabella and for Tubbs in the provocation of an assault on those he loves.

1994 action comedy film directed by James Cameron

Sidney Poitier returned to the big screen in this action-thriller, after a decade-long absence. When a cunning murderer vanishes into the rugged mountains of the Pacific Northwest, pursuing FBI agent Warren Stantin (Poitier) must exchange familiar city streets for unknown wilderness trails. Completely out of his element, Stantin is forced to enlist the aid of expert tracker Jonathan Knox (PLATOON'S Tom Berenger). The killer has infiltrated a guided hiking trip led by Knox's girlfriend Sarah (Kirstie Alley, at the height of her Cheers fame). Viewers don't know which of the hikers is the killer, and the tension lasts well into the movie.

NYPD cop John McClane goes on a Christmas vacation to visit his wife Holly in Los Angeles where she works for the Nakatomi Corporation. While they are at the Nakatomi headquarters for a Christmas party, a group of robbers led by Hans Gruber take control of the building and hold everyone hostage, with the exception of John, while they plan to perform a lucrative heist. Unable to escape and with no immediate police response, John is forced to take matters into his own hands.

1988 American action film by John McTiernan

1980 American musical comedy film by John Landis

A remake of the 1955 comedy, the story revolves around a Southern professor who puts together a group of thieves to rob a casino. They rent a room in an old woman's house, but soon she discovers the plot and they must kill her, a task that is more difficult than it seems.

A vicious London gangster, Jack Carter, travels to Newcastle for his brother's funeral. He begins to suspect that his brother's death was not an accident and sets out to follow a complex trail of lies, deceit, cover-ups and backhanders through Newcastle's underworld, leading, he hopes, to the man who ordered his brother killed. Because of his ruthlessness, Carter exhibits all the unstopability of the cyborg in The Terminator (1984), or Walker in Point Blank (1967), and he and the other characters in this movie are prone to sudden, brutal acts of violence.

2014 American legal drama television series

American dark comedy-crime drama television series
