you know what was the best part of these books? and i say books as in plural because there were so fucking many of them i can't sit still long enough to check them all off. and i DID read every single one. what else was there to do in middle school?anyway, the best part of these books was brian's description of food. it was magnificent. it didn't just make you hungry, it made you crave weird ass things that nobody would ever dream about eating in middle school. nutted cheeses and flan bread and berry cakes and what-not; almost makes you want to be a sword weilding ferret yourself.which was good because by the tenth book you started to realize there was a trend to the plotlines. something bad happens, small furry animals go on a quest. they fight a lot of little battles until one major battle which the good guys almost lose until, when all hope is lost, a giant contingent of allies created on the preceding journey show up to conquer evil: together.still, i always finished satisfied. and a little hungry.

Deschooling Society (1971) is a critical discourse on education as practised in modern economies. It is a book that brought Ivan Illich to public attention. Full of detail on programs and concerns, the book gives examples of the ineffectual nature of institutionalized education. Illich posited self-directed education, supported by intentional social relations in fluid informal arrangements.

If I were to rate 'A Different Kind of Teacher' based on my propensity to share many of Gatto's ideas and how much I appreciate his open, honest, opinions, and considerable elaboration of his unorthodox position I'd have given 5 stars. I do have a few hung-ups with some of Gatto's justifications and I have a hard time getting past the fact he just doesn't give citations. However he did make several references throughout for which I'm thankful.I'll bump this review once I gather my thoughts. Do I recommend it still? Yes.

Before reading this book I really thought I was 100% sure about my reasons to homeschool. Boy, was I wrong. I guess I was only half way there because now that I have finished this book, I realize that I never really saw the harms of the public school system 100%. Our children are being limited every day by being locked away. Our children are struggling with learning more than they did before the system was in place like today. The role models they take on during school really are harming them. But it is much more than that. And if you are a parent who cares about your child, you must read this book. There is no excuse to remaining ignorant about our public school system in America. Do it for your children. There is no other person in the world who cares more about your children than you, who knows what is better for your kids than you. But do your research. They deserve to be given the best education for life.
