What a journey and how well he remembers! With change and happenstance that both hurt and helped. The most dire situations to the summits of intellect - and all in immense quantities of lowest to high. Having read some of his works/books (what a treasure)- I had to read this memoir. It's not a autobiography in the immense detail of his love life or disputes or dysfunctions sense- he explains that in the Preface. But it does describe each and every step towards his latter life and "jobs". And his life view upon the world, economics and much else with where, what, how and every year of his long life. I love the short acknowledgment of thanks at the very beginning. "To Mary Frances, who came to look for me." (He was told she was his cousin who came to visit, but she actually was his full sister.)With his way of looking at the world and ultimate habits of addressing the literal or obvious problem despite the social backlash and/or sure negation and penalty he would know he'd have to pay! Beyond guts. And ultimate thick skinned honesty to reveal and declare his own value of "right" or "correct" or to say where he belonged in class. It's only equaled by his pure intellectual ability to face empirical data without assumption, omission, or distraction of emotive praise or negative reaction. Either.My only feeling after reading this? How could he have stood it for all the changes/path moves/dictates within the Academic World. Academia holds, and did even then, such varying scales for/ to "work" and its evaluations of produce/ results or even the process itself that is nearly 180 degrees from his own. His deduction ability is phenomenal from day 1 (did it expose itself in early /middle school paths). And that he could see in full disclosure that growth would never occur for any good purpose within the bickering and constant emotional duplicities and deceptions, the upheavals of day to day around him- to leave at 17 as he did (legally)! I greatly admire his sight. Beyond just his intellectual and worldview acuity.

This is why I read Sowell:"Classic examples of double standards and selective indignation can be found in a vast literature on the history of slavery - a literature devoted almost exclusively to slavery in the Western world, with only a relative handful of writings on the larger number of slaves in the Islamic world. Thus the institution of slavery, existing on every continent and going back thousands of years, is often discussed as if it were peculiar to Western civilization when, in fact, even the African slave trade was carried on by Arabs for centuries before Europeans took part, and continued for at least another century after the European slave trade to the Western Hemisphere ended. A scholarly - or at least academic study of slavery - has claimed that 'legal barriers against manumission' were among the 'distinctive characteristics' of 'slavery in North America,' when in fact legal barriers to manumission existed in Southeast Asia, ancient Greece, the French Antilles, Surinam, and Curaçao. Reports of how mild slavery was in Islamic countries, and how happy and contented the slaves were there, have been uncritically repeated by writers who would never accept such statements at face value when coming from the white slave society of the Antebellum South in the United States."Neither the enormous mortality rates of the trans-Saharan slave routes, nor the virtual absence of an African diaspora in Islamic countries which took more slaves from Africa than the West did, seems to arouse skepticism about the Middle Eastern version of the story of happy and contented slaves."The biggest story about slavery - how this ancient Institution, older than either Islam or Christianity, was wiped out over vast regions of the earth - remains a story seldom told. At the heart of that story was the West's ending of slavery in its own domains within a century and maintaining pressure on other nations for even longer to stamp out this practice. Instead, the West has been singled out as peculiarly culpable for a worldwide evil in which it participated, when in fact its only real uniqueness was in ultimately opposing and destroying this evil. Yet intellectuals have engaged in desperate attempts to discredit or downgrade the West's long moral crusade which ultimately destroyed slavery. These attempts have ranged from crude dogmatism about Western 'economic interest' behind the abolition of slavery to elusive insinuations along the same lines."A vast literature exists in which this same general idea logical pattern is pervasive, whether the issue of slavery, racism, sexism, or other evils. In this literature, the sins and shortcomings of the human race are depicted as evils as peculiar to the Western world, even when such evils have been demonstrably more prevalent or demonstrably worse in regions of the world ignored during outburst of selective moral indignation. The reasons for such ideological patterns are a large and complex question. What is relevant here is that such ideologies are themselves a political force to be reckoned with. How successful these ideologies will prove to be in undermining the legitimacy of Western Civilization, or in polarizing its races, is a question which only the future can answer."— Thomas Sowell, Race and Cultures, pg. 149-150In short, nothing is new under the sun.

I read the book fearful that it was politically incorrect to entertain alternative viewpoints regarding intellectual equality. I finished the book remaining skeptical of some of the more controversial conclusions about distribution of IQ among different ethnicities. Evidently, there are many skeptics that have raised some legitimate questions about the authors' research. That said, The Bell Curve has persuaded me that heredity has at least some role in intelligence and that IQ is not just a result of environment. Additionally, I now believe that IQ stratifies society more than any other factor. These two claims raise some important questions about the role of government in leveling the intellectual and economic playing field if genetics is a partial cause to one's disadvantage. If disadvantage is no longer strictly environmental it raises a lot of questions about policies that focus on "equality" when nature has caused part of this problem not just "nurture". I am worried that too many people are throwing this book out because its criticized for being "racist". When are people going to stop being xenophobes and at least entertain less conventional ideas (even if they are unpopular)? As soon as an author takes a position that doesn't conform with politically correct positions the "hate" police defame them. I am skeptical of the ethnic differences in IQ that are published in the book, however, if I were skeptical of the East Asians having higher IQ's than Caucasions, then, I would be criticized. It seems as if its only politically correct to be a skeptic when whites like the Jews or Caucasions score higher on IQ test than blacks. There is something seriously wrong with intellectual honesty when it boils down to that.

A subtle paean to Engels. Paints a picture of Engels as the precursor, refiner and ultimately the author of most of what today bears Marx’s name. I exaggerate but it is only because this take amazes me. The book is a great intro to Marxism and takes special care to interpret Marx on his own terms and to stick to all his terminologies and conventions and thus resolve some of the apparent contradictions. This is definitely a work I will keep in mind during my soon-to-begin exploration of Marx’s works and later interpretations.When the conclusion has a passage like this, it makes the book so worth it! -\

Even economists who are Marxists typically utilize a set of analytical tools to which Marx contributed nothing, and have recourse to Marx only for ideological, political, or historical purposes.In professional economics, Capital was a detour into a blind alley, however historic it may be as the centerpiece of a worldwide political movement. What is said and done in its name is said and done largely by people who have never read through it, much less followed its labyrinthine reasoning from its arbitrary postulates to its empirically false conclusions. Instead, the massive volumes of Capital have become a quasi-magic touchstone—a source of assurance that somewhere and somehow a genius "proved" capitalism to be wrong and doomed, even if the specifics of this proof are unknown to those who take their certitude from it.\

In the dystopian world of 2027 London, humans have been incapable of reproducing for 18 year for an unknown reason, meaning the imminent extinction of the species. Britain is the one remaining civilized society on the planet, which has resulted in people wanting to migrate there, so it has become a police state to handle the immigrants, who are placed into refugee camps. Lowly government bureaucrat Theo Faron, once an activist, is approached by the Fishes, deemed a terrorist group, led by his ex-wife Julian Taylor, whom he hasn't seen in almost 20 years, since their marriage disintegrated after their infant son Dylan's death during the 2008 flu pandemic. Although the Fishes did use terrorist means in their on-going revolution against the state in the fight for immigrant rights, Julian vows that they now garner support solely by speaking to the people, and she wants Theo to use his connections to get transit papers for a young immigrant woman named Kee who needs to get to the coast. Although initially reluctant to do it because of the difficulty, Theo is able to grant Julian this favor, however with the change that he now needs to accompany Kee on her journey. As Theo and Kee progress on that journey, Theo learns more and more about what's going on, including the reason that Kee needs to get to the coast, the fact that no one in the group knows if their end destination even exists, and that his and Kee's lives are in greater danger than he believed when they started the journey.
