After reading volume 1: (1 star)I couldn't stand the art (having seen the anime first), and ended up selling my only volume off at a con bring and buy without even finishing it! Glad I went back to it though...After reading up to volume 3:(4 stars)I can imagine that most manga/anime fans will have probably seen or heard of the anime adaptation of Ouran before picking up the manga. Those wanting more of the same should be pretty happy with the manga, as it follows the anime almost to-the-letter so far, plus there is the certainty of new material that goes beyond where the anime series finished.Ouran High School Host Club is basically reverse-harem shoujo crack at its finest: a normal teenage girl is mistaken for a boy, knocks over an expensive vase by accident and somehow winds up paying off her debt by masquerading as a boy and becoming part of the school's Host Club - where filthy rich pretty boys with too much time on their hands entertain filthy rich pretty girls with too much time on their hands.So the series is about a normal (albiet quite sharp and cynical) girl, who spends her time surrounded by a doting group of various beautiful boys: what's not for a teenage female reader to like? And yes, it sounds pretty rubbish when you explain it like that, but there are 2 great things that make Ouran deserving of its 4-star score:1. Character depth and relationships: outwardly the Ouran characters are pretty shallowly designed - there's your glasses-wearing guy, stoic guy, babyface guy, twins etc. etc. but once you get into reading the series their personalities, backstories and interactions with each other make them much more unique people (albiet still comedically over-the-top people).2. Sense of humour: the way the author plays with the boundary between normal ('poor') people and the filthy rich Ouran students is hilarious, plus some funny moments come simply from the range of character traits of the Host Club members, and subversion of them.The only thing that lets the manga version Ouran down for me is the artwork - originally I was really turned off by the art style in issue 1 as the characters seemed way uglier than their anime counterparts. However, the giant eyes do get steadily downplayed as the series goes on, and after flicking through a random copy of vol. 10 in the shops one day I could see that the art did eventually converge more with the look of the anime.After reading up to vol. 9:(5 stars)Absolutely loving this manga series! The art has got a lot prettier and more consistent now that I'm on volume 9, making it easier to read and more enjoyable all round. So far there has only been one chapter with events that I don't recall from the anime - everything else is very similar, and with the improvements to the artwork I'm enjoying the manga now at least as much as I enjoyed the anime, which is just what I wanted from it.What I love about reading manga over watching anime though is that you do it at your own pace, so I can read quickly past some of the silly school side stories but savour the moments of character development and chuckle-able funny bits :)After reading the entire series (18 vols):(4 stars)As the series progresses it loses a lot of the comedy antics and becomes more of a drama. There are also parts where I felt it was being stretched out with little arcs that were not needed. Overall though there was enough quality in the content that it kept me coming back right up to the end, and I'm glad I saw it through. Its always quite a big event to finish a long series that you've been collecting for several years, and this was no exception.

Roald Dahl, while keeping the plot moving imaginatively, also has an unerring ear for emotional truth. The Hunger Games Trilogy: these are my issues, let me show you them.Most of the good fiction/fantasy/scifi literature these days is coming out of the Young Adult and Juvenile areas, so every six months or so I round up the new stuff and go on a reading spree. Around two years ago that included the Hunger Games trilogy (thanks to an ARC copy of Mockingjay). I did a review on that for my work newsletter which made me think about it for a good long while. (It wasn’t my best review because we’re encouraged not to say anything bad about the books, the object being to get people to read, not to drive them away.)The first book, Hunger Games, is awesome. Beyond awesome. I loved it and I greatly encourage anyone who hasn’t read it to pick it up now and get to reading! Engaging characters, tight (in both senses of the word) narrative, a plot that, while being far from original, seems shiny and new for all the different spins Suzanne Collins puts on it. It draws out your emotions and engages them, keeps you on the edge of your seat. Highly, highly recommended.The problem is, it’s best if you stop there. I sure wish the story had. At least Hunger Games stands on its own, and after reading the other two in the trilogy, I know that I can go back and just reread the first one and never have to touch the other two to have a complete fulfilling story.That’s not to say that the second book is terrible. Catching Fire is actually pretty good. Not up to the same standards as the first book - it does feel like exactly what it is, the middle book in a trilogy - but not a bad read at all. Basically it both asks and answers the age-old question, “If you could go back and do it all over, knowing everything you do now, would you do anything differently?” Which is intriguing, definitely. But at the same time, it is kind of a rehash of the first book, which is what makes it less engaging. The characters, the politics and the good narrative stop it from feeling tired and dull, and again, it’s a good read, but it’s lost its originality and some of the excitement that made the first book so entertaining.And then there’s the real problem; Catching Fire isn’t a complete narrative on its own. To know the whole story you have to read the third book, Mockingjay.Oh man, Mockingjay. The book that had all the potential to be a wonderful, heart-racing, utterly amazing finale to the trilogy. So much potential; so much fail. The ideas were there, but the execution was...just that. An execution. It’s like everything that would’ve made it a phenomenal book was taken out back and double-tapped.Even a couple years later I’m still somewhat angry when I think about it. Still so disappointed. I keep asking myself, did the author have a word limit she had to adhere to? Was she over her deadline by too much and had to rush? Was she simply bored/tired of this world? What on earth could’ve made her do this?Going against one of the major rules of good writing, Mockingjay is an exercise in telling instead of showing. Nothing big happens in the book that the author isn’t telling us about it instead of giving us the wonderful descriptions of the previous two books. With very few exceptions, events happen off screen and we get an info dump explaining them. That alone was just terrible to read. But then there’s poor Katniss.Remember the spitfire, kick-ass woman of the previous two books, the one who was determined to do whatever she could to survive and thus ensure her family’s survival? Yeah, well, say goodbye to her before reading this last book because you won’t be seeing much of her again.It’s like she just floats through events, letting things happen to her and barely reacting. She just lets herself be used, over and over, turns into something akin to a leaf in the wind. The few decisions she does make often don’t make any sort of good sense and we’re left wondering if this is really Katniss or a robot in a Katniss skin.The introduction of new characters should help things, but the narrative fails there too. The characters (heck, even the old ones we’re familiar with!) aren’t given nearly enough fleshing out; they’re just there. They don’t feel as real, as three dimensional as characters did in the last two books.The combination of all that leaves us with a flat, lifeless book and what amounts to a boring read. You want to get excited, I mean, there are serious, emotional things going on! Or at least they’re supposed to be. Hard to say when you don’t feel it and it’s just words on a page. The originality, excitement and all the drive behind the first two books is just gone. Vanished. And it’s painful to see.Yeah, two years gone and I’m still not over that. Such a let-down.I still encourage people to pick up The Hunger Games, but I barely give the next two in the trilogy more than a cursory mention. I reserve all my glowing praise for the first book and try to pretend the third never happened.

An interesting children's book from the 1970s, which succeeds largely on the strength of it's fine grasp of child psychology and language, and its naturalistically rambling, inconclusive plot. I liked it as a child because it felt less like a "story", and more like a slice of life of a real person - albeit an interesting slice. And re-reading it as an adult, I feel much the same way.Oh, it's simplistic by the standards of adult novels. It's a little dated here and there, and the world it depicts - the 1970s, in which young children wander around among urban back alleys, weirs, rockfalls, deserted industrial facilities and so on without the slightest parental oversight, while occasionally being beaten by authority figures - may as well be Narnia by comparison with children's lives today (indeed, Narnia is probably easier to understand today than the 1970s are...).... and yet, for the right child, I think Tyke Tiler could still be an engaging read. And for an adult in the right frame of mind, there's still something to enjoy here - this isn't mindless or patronising, it's a genuinely insightful look at a person's psychology. That person just happens to be a child, and that child happens also to be the narrator, but that doesn't make their story any less interesting.It's also become timely again, because of its central gimmick - which, to its credit, never feels like a gimmick: the twist ending, in which it is revealed that (view spoiler)[Tyke has been a girl all along (hide spoiler)]

Twelve out of five thousand participants were chosen through Fudanjuku's 'Next Generation Audition'. Seven of the chosen participants went on to form The Hoopers, and the remaining five formed AXELL. The Hoopers debuted on March 4, 2015 with 'Loving You' (イトシコイシ君恋シ）(Itoshi koishi kimi koishi). Their eighth member Cecil (who is also an Axell member) was introduced on their single 'Passionate Love' as a permanent member. Later in 2015 they held the Ikemen Audition, where they selected 6 people to become members of Little Hoop (they are described as apprentice members for The Hoopers). Lee of AXELL and Noa of little HOOP joined the group as new members on the 25 June 2017, and on the 28th of July The Hooper's released their new single 'Shamrock'.

The first season aired from October 2002 to October 2003 and was positively received by critics. Patlabor: The TV Series, known in Japan as Mobile Police Patlabor (機動警察パトレイバー), is a 1989-1990 anime television series. It was created by Headgear, animated by Sunrise, and based on the Patlabor anime franchise. The story focuses on Second Special Vehicles Division (SV2), a group of Patlabor policemen who fight and investigate crimes. The TV series is an alternate timeline to the original Patlabor OVAs and films, with an all-new origin story.The television series was animated by Sunrise and was directed by Naoyuki Yoshinaga.With success of the first movie, Patlabor became one of the first OVAs to be ported to TV. Originally planned for 24 episodes, (up to the end of Kanuka's practicum at SV2), the series was extended twice. First to 36 episodes, to cover the conflict with Schaft, and then to 47 episodes in order to conclude the series.
Later in the story, Kanuka Clancy leaves and a new character is introduced, exclusive to the television series, named Takeo Kumagami. The Patlabor: The New Files OVAs are a follow up to the series.
