Flanders' countryside in Belgium's early decades didn't belong to the hard-working farmers, like patriarch Van Paemel, who would rather die then consider any alternative to knowing his place and responding to problems like Animal farm's donkey, toiling even harder till it kills him anyhow. This Flemish heimat-movie after a novel by Felix Timmermans, the title of which translates as "farmers psalm", is about the at first sight idyllic, but actually tragical life of Wortel, a god-fearing peasant in a pre-war Belgian village, who has a hard time accepting the curate's assurance it's all part of God's grand plan when his loved ones keep coming to terrible harm, and searching solace in the hand-carving of a wooden statue of Christ.

This long-running sitcom, Flanders' most successful comedy series, is named "F.C. De Kampioenen". The show is about a bunch of acquaintances in a small Belgian town, who are quite bad at their sport, soccer, but can't do without each other despite many rivalries, pranks, envy etc. Far more action takes place in the pub - also club canteen - of the Crucke family and their respective homes then on the field, which is close to the nasty garage-manager and owner. The major characters are the players and their wives, and the sponsor and club president, who owns a sausage factory.

The script of this relatively prestigious Flemish TV series was composed by Paul Koeck, himself a Flemish novelist, from several books of his colleague Gerard Walschap, one of which provided the title, Dutch for 'Our happiness', but the story is definitely not one of bliss. The main protagonist is René Hox, a fine and talented young man, son of two uncultivated rag-pickers who keeps their name even though he's adopted by the generous wealthy brewer Door Onckeloms who puts him trough university as his prospective heir; René however chooses to follow his inclination to the arts. His over-developed social conscience soon gets him in conflict with the conservative elite, and things don't improve when he falls in love with Leontien Verstraeten, a ruthless libertarian. There are many other story-lines involving various other characters, most of which end up seeing their apparent good fortune squashed by life.
