4.8/5

I've been admiring wolves since I was a little girl reading The Jungle Book. Before that I was seriously worried about the Big Bad Wolf in the tale of the Little Red Riding Hood - my mother had to change the ending for me, because I cried whenever I heard that hunters (or whoever) killed the Wolf to set the girl and her granny free... I wish I had a hardcover with all this gorgeous photos instead of an ebook. Maybe someday I will.A beautiful couple of wolves, wonderfully caught on cam by Adam Wajrak.Adam Wajrak did a great and invaluable job observing wolf packs and their environment for years on the territory of Białowieża Forest in Poland and Belarus. This is a half ass review for his fantastic book.I learned a lot about wolves from this book. They are an amazing creatures, beautiful, intelligent, caring, curious, brave and sometimes goofy and playful. And sometimes cruel, but only when they need to survive, as they were designed this way by nature. They love their family, they respect their elders and there's no such thing as "lonely wolf" - it's a very romantic character of course, but also false, because wolves can't live outside of their pack.I learned same old stuff about humans - another chapter in the Big Book of Cruelty humanity is writing. I don't even want to start... Just one fact - the best way to get rid of wolves in area? Find their pups while they're under two weeks old and kill them. I know we kill millions of cows every day just to get that burger (not like I feel good about it), but it still was too painful to read...There's been a lot of negative mythologization and demonizing going on about wolves since ages and we still can observe it in folklore and even popular culture. And of course it never did any good for wolf population around the world. Not so long ago many European countries and some American states completely got rid of their wolves. Sometimes purposefully, sometimes accidentally. Which is hard to believe and I actually never realized it. It's sad.But I'm also glad to learn that some countries put their wolves under protection and are slowly rebuilding their population and the fragile balance in ecology that was always broken by human interruption. A face of the man is a thing than scares wild animals the most. Guess why, huh?I thoroughly enjoyed author's photography and his amazing storytelling, I can only wish the book was bigger and contained more stories about wolves and all kinds of animals and birds he met and had around him. And maybe some more happy stories...
