Books like Unfriendly Competition

OK, so my daughter is like BIG time into horses and for a stretch was obsessed with Canterwood and this series of books by Jessica Burkhart. I, being the anglophone father of a bi-cultural kid, tried to read this in English to her. Tried? well, I read it to her, but honestly, it was a painful experience. First off, the blatant commercialism of this writer is obnoxious - it was like reading a Sephora catalog and a Gap catalog the whole time. The other super annoying feature is that these girls are supposed to be like 11 or 12 years old, but they are living like 15 or 16 year olds. Now, I have lived outside the US for over 2 decades and it is possible that American culture is 5-10 years advanced than French culture, but I have a hard time believing that these little girls are as mature as they are portrayed. Even my daughter eventually got fed up with the superficiality of the plots and the inane characters in these books. My advice? Stick to Nancy Drew!
