The Varnished Untruth

After writing two books on her husband, Billy Connolly, Pamela decided to tackle a far more difficult subject - herself. The Varnished Untruth is told like Dr Connolly is in fact psychoanalyzing herself. This is an interesting way to write a memoir, but it is hard to escape the conclusion that Pamela Stephenson still hasn't really dealt with the issues of her past and is detaching herself from them. And it is quite a harrowing past. We are all aware of the abuse that her husband suffered as a child, but I for one, was totally unaware that his wife had suffered abuse too.I wouldn't call The Varnished Untruth a good read, as such. It is actually quite difficult to read at times. For anyone who has experienced any kind of abuse, it becomes quite painful at times.I knew little about Pamela except she was the blonde Aussie/Kiwi in Not the Nine O'Clock News, married Billy Connolly and was a qualified psychologist. I came away from The Varnished Untruth with a great deal of respect and admiration for Pamela Stephenson. She is a role model for abuse survivors, or indeed, anyone who is struggling in life. The book is articulate, and in places humourous. But if anyone actually reads this for entertainment, I suggest they book themselves an appointment with Dr Connolly!
