The Sleeping Arrangement

2019, Neva Bell

5/5

This was a very inventive twist on the marriage of convenience trope. The two main characters become trapped in an elevator and Julie manages to calm Drew's panic, convince him that the best chance of surviving if the elevator falls is to lie flat on the floor and the combination of her calm presence and light humming put them both to sleep—for four hours of unexpected rest that the insomniac Drew is completely unused to (but welcomes). So the titular arrangement is truly about sleeping and not at all sexual, though, of course, being together in private spaces leads to getting to know one another and a personal relationship develops from there. And I really liked this story, despite a lot of fantastical (in the sense of unlikely rather than anything magical) elements in it. Julie was caring and kind and worked hard to build the life she wants for herself and her brother. I liked how they didn't build up any stupid rules about sex into the sleeping contract because they simply assumed they were adults and could make choices. I liked how the people around Drew said so much about his character, and not always in a good way.The story itself isn't overly complex and things proceeded pretty much how I expected. For example, I saw the big plot twist coming from half a novel away simply because the narrative structure had a twist-shaped hole in it that begged to be filled in a certain way. But that can be a good thing and I'm thinking that is the case here. Even the dark moment played out along expected lines but in such a way that I was okay with it and was along for the ride. Which is something of a holiday miracle if you know anything about my reading preferences. So I'm giving this a solid four stars for being a well-enjoyed romance that engaged me for a quiet evening. It's a little too predictable and too pat to go higher, but if you're in the mood for an engaging romance with wish fulfillment elements and just enough originality to be fun you could do worse than starting here.A note about Chaste: Bell pulls the curtain just barely in time for this to be chaste . . . for me. Enough is shown that it's a close call, so if your expectation of a chaste story is at all strict please bear that in mind.
