Frostfire

2010Lynn Viehl

4.3/5

Having just finished Lynn Viehl's latest Kyndred novel FrostFire I have this to say, this is one of the most CONFUSING AND FRUSTRATING series I have ever read. Allow me to explain. Both of her series, the Darkyn and the Kyndred kind of intermingle, in that some characters are Darkyn and some are Kyndred but they both are and were wanted by Genero and the bio tech companies, they both are immoratal and have some unique characteristics as enhanced people, but some of the way their gifts present are different. Here's the thing though, the way Lynn writes, nothing is ever clear. Nothing is ever fully explained the way I at least like it to be. Its not about me being simplistic, its about me wanting a clear explanation of what the heck is going on. I'd like to know what Lilah's gifts are and what she transforms herself into and what happens when she gets mad or has a bad dream. All we know by the end of the book is she has some kind of super Dr. Doolittle thing going on, but why does that make her transform. How does Guy/Guide/Walker go from Darkyn to whatever he is now, and what is he now? Still immortal, human what is he, and is he a were-animal? Was he always a were something or had the ability to be a were animal... This number of questions, this gluttonous caucophony of unanswered stuff is what pisses me off about a Lynn Viehl book. Sure its written well and it has some great points but there is so much about it that is still unanswered, it makes me super angry, then you get to the next book and its nothing. I read the book before this, Dreamveil and the one before it, and though Dreamveil was good, in so much as it clearly explained Rowan's problem, it left this GAPING hole explaining what the hell was going on with Luc and his second half, alter person/alterbody, alter personality, and then it didn't explain why he was the carbon copy of Michael, a Darkyn. It NEVER explained his origins or how he came to be. Its almost like Ms. Viehl came up with a list of the craziest most out there conditions she could think of, gave these characters those conditions, and said, "genetic testing and vampires should cover it" and just decided not to explain where this stuff came from. The characters themselves, their interactions, all interesting fine and good, but what I want to know, what I think everyone wants to know is never addressed or solved.
