Freedom's Land

2008Anna Jacobs

4.9/5

I have to admit this isn't my kind of book, so criticism is probably unfair. It's a simple, formulaic story. The bad guys are bad, the good guys are good, bad things happen to good guys, but bad guys soon get their comeuppance and bad things are soon overcome. Good guys have hearts of gold, bureaucrats don't have hearts, but eventually the good guys live happily ever after. So why did I choose to read it? I was intrigued by the reference to Australia's Soldier Settlement programme, which I had never heard of. Land was given to any married soldier who had served in the war, along with loans to help him start a farm. I wanted to learn more, but I got no more than a flavour from this book. I had to search online to discover that by 1924 over 23,000 farms had been allotted across Australia. Western Australia (the setting for this story) allocated more land than any other state, but established just over 1,000 farms. So, too much melodrama and not enough history for me, but I did get something out of it. It made a pleasant change to read about people who are kind to each other. We encounter too much greed and selfishness in our daily lives. It's nice to be reminded what community life can be like.
