Annie Oakley: Young Markswoman
I know it's a kid's book, but there has got to be something better written on Annie Oakley. The first few chapters contain material that is obviously fabricated, such as Annie's "conversation" with her sister in which her sister sounds remarkably like a modern feminist sneering at the era's values -- but with a straight face. So I spent the rest of the book wondering how much of it actually happened, and how much of it the author made up to fill in holes in what is known about Annie. (There are no notes to clarify, at least not in the copy that I read.) Did she really, with her second bullet ever fired, kill a wolf? Was her mother really that set on selling her father's rifle? Was Annie really lured into virtual slavery, and did a stranger really buy her a ticket when she (really?) ran away? Also, the book ends abruptly with a letter Annie wrote (right?) from England. When did she die? Did she have any children? Did her marriage last? Did she have any female contemporaries, or have other women been inspired by her? Context, hey how 'bout some?Definitely need another book about this lady!
