Tom Sawyer Abroad
Tom Sawyer:Huck Finn:Jim:Hot air balloon: Add all of the above together and you have the third installment of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn adventures. The trio I mentioned (and showed) above ended up on a hot air balloon which brought them to Northern Africa deserts. It is a good book. The biggest problem with the book is the one I already mention: it is a good book. Do I make any sense here? Consider this: the first book is the classic of children literature; the second one is the classic of world literature, period. This is a good book, but nowhere close to the level of the first two. Mark Twain's wit and humor is still here. The story has an interesting beginning, but ultimately it goes nowhere. It even ends quite abruptly and unexpectedly - I have an impression Mark Twain himself realized the plot becomes irrelevant and just stopped writing. One more problem I had with the book: in the previous one Huck Finn displays wisdom coming from his life experience - he is a homeless orphan, so he had already seen quite a lot of different sides of life. Here his reasoning is retarded at times. It surely gives the author an excellent opportunity to show his wit and use satire, but it comes at the expense of the Huck's character. For people who does not know about the whole series: there is one more story in it called Tom Sawyer, Detective. It is shorter than the limit I set for myself as a criterion for a story to be reviewed, so I will not do it. As title suggests it is a detective story featuring both guys. It is decent as detective stories go, but nothing to write home about.
