The Charwoman's Shadow

1999Lord Dunsany

4.9/5

Do not let the uninspired (and uninspiring) cover of the Del Rey edition to keep you away from this masterpiece, an exquisite counterpart for the first Shadow Valley chronicle. This time the protagonist follows not the ways of the sword, as Don Rodriguez did in the first chronicle, but the ways of the sorcery.Extremely well written, very suspensfull, surprisingly funny and dark enough, „Charwoman`s Shadow” offers us also two great classic characters (and archetypes!): the plump, benevolent and sharp-minded Father Joseph, and the beautiful, seductive, smart and „deeply superficial”, yet honorable Mirandola. One word: AMAZING.NB This 1926 book is featuring a duel between a young apprentice and a Galactic Master of Magic, Chill and Shadows, who uses a sword of light to wound the hand and to set on fire the arm of the young apprentice. It may be no great surprise for the reader to find out that the young apprentice, though going most of the book by the name of Ramon Alonzo, was also baptized „Luke”.
