The Name of the Wind, also called The Kingkiller Chronicle: Day One, is a fantasy novel written by American author Patrick Rothfuss. It is the first book in a series called The Kingkiller Chronicle and followed by The Wise Man's Fear. It was published on March 27, 2007 by DAW Books.

Rothfuss wrote The Name of the Wind during his nine-year advance toward his B.S. in English. He drew inspiration from the idea that he wanted a completely new kind of book that doesn't have the generic characteristics of fantasy.

A sequel entitled The Wise Man's Fear was released on March 1, 2011 by DAW Books. Before its release, an excerpt from the novel was released as a short story titled The Road to Levinshir, which won the Writers of the Future contest in 2002.
