3.7/5

I'm not in the age group that this book is aimed at, but I do teach 8 and 9 year olds, so read a great many books aimed at them. It's a shame that this book had quite a few problems, because in many ways the writing wasn't bad and I did want to finish the adventure, so bought the next two books - which leads me to my first complaint. The book is really only a third of a book. I understand why the author has done this - to sell more - but it was a bit annoying and I felt slightly short-changed.My second problem with all three books in the series was the inept editing and proofreading. I know it's difficult, but once the book is out in the big wide Kindle world and people are noticing the mistakes, it's a very easy thing to take it off-line and change it.My third problem with the story, which covers the three books, was that it was too complex. Characters get introduced almost at random and I wondered if they just provided padding to get the word-count up for 3 books. Again, this is such a shame, as hidden within too much going on was a very appealing story for this age group.Having said all that, I did enjoy a lot about the books and I think children would too. They probably wouldn't notice the problems I had with the books, but on the poor editing I do believe we should offer our children the best examples of writing.
