Three classic Poe tales. The Raven, The Masque of the Red Death, and The Cask of Amontillado. The Raven is an all time classic; I always think of The Simpsons' Halloween special whenever I read it.The Masque of the Red Death has been on my to-read list for awhile now; Stephen King makes a lot of allusion to this story (especially in The Shining and Dark Tower). I'm glad to have had a chance to read it, it is a very dark and chilling tale of a grotesque masquerade in a land threatened by plague. The Cask of Amontillado is one that I knew nothing about before reading, yet I belief I've heard variations many times before. A man set on vengeance leads his friend down into his wine cellar with dark intent. I think that in no giving the motive for requiring vengeance makes this story all the more cruel. These three stories are definitely worth reading if only for the cultural value they prove above all else. Probably the three most referenced of Poe's tales.
