Kindergarten, Here I Come!
Before I begin this review, I think it fitting to say that, if one looked at all the books I have reviewed, it is a random, motley lot - and I rather like that. I read random things that end up in front of me. Which brings me to this poetry collection, which my daughter brought to me and asked me to read to her. She is a strong reader, but on occasion she asks us as parents to read to her and so I obliged her request. The poems are simple, sing-song affairs, but effective for a 4-6 year old audience. My daughter, having finished kindergarten and first grade, finds the poems funny and silly as the "concerns" they cover have become old hat to her now, but for my kindergarten bound son, they provide the comfort of predictability. A solid work for the audience and not a terrible way to introduce simple poems to the pre-K crowd. If you want it for that purpose, this is a solid place to start. For an in depth examination of how schooling works, look elsewhere- maybe Graham's Schooling America would be best- as an adult examination of the role kindergarten plays. I kid in part, but this is definitely a solid work for pre-k and the kindergarten crowd, but others may not find it as engaging.
