Voyeur

2007Lacey Alexander

4.8/5

I’ll start this off by saying that this one just wasn’t my cup of tea. It was my first Lacey Alexander read and I’m not sure I’ll go out of my way to seek out anything else by this author. Now, that said, if you’re looking for a purely sexual read, one that will get the juices flowing and feed those fantasies that many of us are too shy to ever consider actually living out, then this might be the read for you. But – and you knew that ‘but’ was coming – personally, as a reader I need a better, richer storyline than Voyeur provided. I want to connect to the characters – to relate to them in some way – but due to lack of their development on the author’s part, I wasn’t given that opportunity. I mean, ok, we know that Laura is an author suffering from writer’s block that was, astonishingly, overcome by a week of mind blowing sex with a stranger, but that’s the extent of her character development. No compelling emotions, no deep dark secret she has to unload… she just… was... and because of that, she never became a real person to me, but always remained just words on a page. The same is true of Braden, "Flyboy", who I even have less affection for than I do Laura. No matter how you slice it, he’s one sick puppy. I can go along with the webcam set up to monitor the house, but then to watch a complete stranger who just happens to be masturbating in your house in front of said webcam… I don’t buy that it was merely coincidental that he tuned in just at that moment. Nope. Not a chance. He was watching, waiting, hoping to get an eyeful of an unsuspecting woman getting ready for bed and got even more. This is just my opinion, of course. But still, this is just a book, someone else’s story, so I tried to go with the flow, feel the mojo, and give in to my inner chi—whatever that is.Then we meet Tommy – poor, broken hearted Tommy who has lost the love of his life because he cheated on her and she used the good sense God gave her and left him. He’s seen the error of his ways and now regrets his actions wholeheartedly. He’s still suffering, still struggling over what he lost. Thank heavens that his best friend Flyboy invited him over for a night of dinner and ménage because that seemed to be just what Tommy needed to get him out of his funk. Hell, now he’s out there dating again and who knows what else! So keep that in mind, if you ever feel bad about cheating on someone – or know someone else who does – suggest a ménage session with a complete stranger. If it worked for Tommy, it might just work for you, too!I really wanted to like this story, but I felt the writing lacked much thought and was thoroughly annoyed by the “story within the story” because I felt like those pages could have been put to better use by building the plot and the characters into a story worth reading, and people worth caring for. But in my opinion, it was just there to help fill the pages between sex acts and help the author meet her word count.Sexual content: voyeurism (duh!) anal, ménage, and something else I can’t recall at the moment...oh, exhibitionism. 2.5/5 stars because while it wasn't horrible, I really can't say I liked it.
