Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

1996, Robert Lewis May

2.4/5

Well, Christmas is coming very soon (I'm in the midst of final exams personally, so it doesn't feel like it), but I figured it might be nostalgic to read this old classic Christmas tale. My edition of this book at one point came with a vinyl record, but the record has long since been lost so I didn't consider playing it on my own record player. The story's pretty straightforward, and any kid who's ever gone to a public school Christmas concert will remember being made to sing the rhyme while wearing red-and-green reindeer antler headbands from the dollar store. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer follows a deer at the North Pole (#9 out of Santa Claus's eight famed sleigh-pulling reindeer), but unlike the others, Rudolph has a glowing red nose. How exactly this would happen I'm not sure, maybe he dipped his nose in radium paint once, I didn't really think much into it. Anyway, the other deer tease him for his embarrassing difference, excluding him from their own close-knit group of friends. But does Rudolph have a hidden advantage that could save Christmas?Every kid has faced rejection/bullying from peers at least once, so this story isn't just some Christmas sing-along but also a good tale about acceptance and unity during the holiday season, or any other time. A reminder that Christmas is supposed to be about coming together, not mocking others or ostracizing those who don't fit in. If you like me don't have a vinyl record of the song accompanying the book, I'm sure a quick YouTube search will resurrect it.
