Polaris
Lovecraft wrote the philosophical reverie “Polaris” (1918) in his late twenties, shortly after his first period as a serious writer had begun. For the Lovecraft fan, this short story is notable for two things: 1) it seems to be influenced by Dunsany, a writer Lovecraft would not encounter for at least a year, and 2) it is based upon the writer's own dream (a dream so intense Lovecraft felt as if he had been possessed by some ancient ancestor) which featured an city empty of people yet filled with monumental sculptures, an image which Lovecraft would repeat in his writings again and again.“Polaris,” although not nearly as haunting or as chilling as the later tales, possesses a cosmic breadth and an awe of antediluvian origins that foreshadows the great works to come.
