Love Poems

1999Anne Sexton

4.8/5

These poems were remarkably good from one of my favourite poets, it's difficult to pick a favourite, "THE INTERROGATION OF THE MAN OF MANY HEARTS", "FOR MY LOVER, RETURNING TO HIS WIFE", "THE BREAK", "THE BALLAD OF THE LONELY MASTURBATOR", and "Us" (featured below), were probably my top five. "I was wrapped in blackfur and white fur and you undid me and thenyou placed me in gold lightand then you crowned me,while snow fell outsidethe door in diagonal darts. While a ten-inch snowcame down like starsin small calcium fragments,we were in our own bodies(that room that will bury us)and you were in my body(that room that will outlive us)and at first I rubbed yourfeet dry with a towelbecause I was your slaveand then you called me princess.Princess! Oh thenI stood up in my gold skinand I beat down the psalmsand I beat down the clothesand you undid the bridleand you undid the reinsand I undid the buttons, the bones, the confusions, the New England postcards, the January ten o'clock night, and we rose up like wheat, acre after acre of gold, and we harvested,we harvested."
