Long Quiet Highway: Waking Up in America

I fell in love with Natalie Goldberg when I first read her book Writing Down the Bones in college. This memoir of finding her zen teacher and learning what he was trying to teach her is beautifully written. I didn't always relate to her, because she had the freedom to quit jobs, leave the world behind, and sit for weeks and months in meditation. As a person who chose to have children, that kind of freedom won't be available to me for a long time. I envy her carefree, spontaneous life, but I chose something different. So if I'm going to find spiritual enlightenment and wake up the way she did; I'm going to have to go about it a different way.But my heart opened when I read this. I understood Buddhism just a little better from reading about her experiences. And I cried. It's a slow book, and not for everyone. But you will know who you are, and this book will amaze you, too.
