3.6/5

Sean is a 15 year old high school freshman. He has no one to look up to as his mother is abusive and a drug and alcohol addict. His father left the family a few years back and hasn't talked to Sean since. To make matters worse, whatever money Sean is able to make is stolen by his mother on a weekly basis. His friends aren't the nicest people either. He really only has one friend and multiple enemies. Already with a growing police record, Sean is at a party with under age drinking that he and his best friend Mike are participating in. They left just before the police arrived. On the way home from the party a police car chased after the boys. Mike got away but the car followed Sean and he got busted. Sean was taken in, not because of under age drinking, but because it was his fourth time to break curfew in 6 months. Because Sean already had a police record, he will be required to do community service. His services were needed at Carbondale Ranch, home to Mr. Dave Hassler. This didn't sound too appealing to Sean but after his first night on the ranch things started to change. New surprises are revealed to Sean during his week on the ranch. He had been suspended from school for getting in a fight. After completing his community service Sean no longer cares about fighting. Sean's new friends at the ranch have become like family and they have changed his life for the better. I don't think I can really relate to Sean but I truly did enjoy this book. It was absolutely amazing. Rottman did a terrific job giving details about the different characters. Young or old, friend or enemy, Sean definitly has some "special" people to deal with in his life.
