The remnants of Aekir's civilians and the remnants of the western defenses retreat toward Orman Dyke in hopes of holding the Merduks at the Dyke. Amid political machinations, The Five Kingdoms try to cobble together a defensive strategy while the Church adds its own maneuverings after the supposed death of the High Pontiff in Aekir. The Church has started a purge of Dweomer-folk after the fall of Aekir, blaming the tragedy on the peoples acceptance of the magical folk. Richard Hawkwood is tasked with a secret commission, to search for the fabled lands far to the west on the known world. As Hawkwood and his crews set out, they have only a mysterious rutter, many Dweomer-folk and the hopes of the King to find the legendary western continent.Multiple POVs, great battle scenes, political and religious maneuverings, magic, wizards, gunpowder, action and adventure.....just a fantastic mix for the kind of story I love..10/10
