Dont You Dare Read This, Mrs. Dunphrey: Teacher Guide

Don't you dare read this, Mrs. Dunphrey is a book about a teacher named, of course Mrs. Dunphrey, and she teaches an English class and makes her students write in a journal. One of her students, named Tish accepts this and writes about her own personal issues in her life down in her journal. She puts on her journal, "Don't read this, Mrs. Dunphrey" because she said if you put that on there then she wouldn't read it, and she kept her word. Until one day, when Tish finally decided to write, "Do read this, Mrs. Dunphrey" on the top of her final journal entry. Which then of course, Mrs. Dunphrey did so, and she had to take action of the personal information Tish had written about in her journal, including calling DCFS. I really enjoyed reading this book, I couldn't put it down once I had picked it up! The whole time while I was reading this book I kept thinking to myself if only Mrs. Dunphrey would peek in on Tish's journal entries and read some of it for just a minute, so could have helped her so much sooner than Tish finally having to come to Mrs. Dunphrey and telling her to read it. But I see both sides here. Tish wouldn't have trusted Mrs. Dunphrey, or an adult in general, ever again if she wouldn't have kept her word to Tish, but on the other hand, Tish could have been helped a lot sooner if Mrs. Dunphrey would have read her journal a lot sooner. I would recommend that every future teacher reads this book, so they can realize that every child's home life is different for each child, so you should try your best to put the least amount of pressure on your students as possible. You don't want to add to the students problems when they are trying to feed themselves, siblings, and even take care of their younger siblings. As a future teacher, I hope that I would be able to help my students like Tish in the future, and take action just like Mrs. Dunphrey did, so I can help make that students future better than what they are experiencing now. I was really happy that Tish got the help she needed and was reunited with her mom in the end, and that they are getting the help they need.
